Of the 2 exhibition games & 2 regular season Monmouth was our most complete performance. The chemistry & team work was impressive--excellent ball movement.
You can see the confidence of our Sophs after a year. All are playing very well. Hard to start naming them for fear of leaving someone out. That being said. Whitley & Aylmer are playing exceptionally well in the middle. Up front, Hendley has a much better sense of what's going on, is much more confident, is utilizing her speed well & just playing very well; LaPlant, while dealing with a nagging injury, is fast, skilled & clearly playing with increased confidence, & will be a factor; senior Ciarrocca is smart & will always be a factor. On the back side. Norton a senior on the outside has been very, very solid & steady. Confidence is letting her play loose & make good decisions; A. Moneme,a junior, has come into her own--also playing with confidence & very, very well. She started as holding middie in the two exhibitions, but due to an injury to soph Visco dropped back to center D for Loyola & Monmouth. Never missed a beat; Swaby, soph, at center D is excellent & playing with increased confidence, as was her partner Visco before her injury [ don't think she'll be out too long]; what can you say about junior Wright on the outside D? Just a terrific soccer player, who had a great game today; and senior Monroy coming off the bench for major minutes--experienced, smart, excellent decisions, really steady.

As for the Frosh, so many playing & all doing well-- Ali, Provenzano, Goldstein, Lane, A. Ferreira, Terabasso, Jiminez, Colon. Others, Soph Katona on the back side & Soph Star at forward are stepping in with solid performances. Neither played much last year. Soph Sayer doing the same at forward. And oh yes we have Murphy at keeper--nuff said. BTW don't know if she had to face a shot today. I may have missed someone, & if so I apologize. Whoever you may be, you are playing well, because the whole team is playing well to a girl.
In addition, soph Wiltshire has not played due to injury, but should be back soon. She is fast, very good & very versitile. Also frosh forward N Moneme was out with an injury today & I believe on Friday. She played in the exhibitions & may also play a role going forward--fast & tall. PS.-- Senior keeper Scarola got some minutes in one of the exhibitions. Happy to see that. She acquitted herself quite well, no doubt.

With so many playing and as you say playing well do you think he will continue to substitute liberally to wear other teams down or does he shorten the bench as they go forward?it just sounds like they have so much talent very excited about how far this team can go this year!!

I think that he will shorten the bench some but expect that he will play a very significant number of girls. These freshmen can really play & will get even better as the year rolls on. Our depth should be to our advantage late in games & as the season wears on. Good test this Sun at home vs UConn.

In college soccer, are there any limitations to substituting?

Great recap, dad!
Love keeping up with the team with your posts.
Thanks!

pretty sure they can substitute in unlimited numbers. It's one of the things I don't like about college soccer and makes it really choppy. The games all have very little flow.

I can't agree with that. I watch them, but compared to professional soccer, it's vastly different from a flow perspective. And that has nothing to do with the skill level. It's all of the subs.

If they want to allow unlimited substitutions, they should do what lacrosse and hockey do and change on the fly.

Well I can't agree with that. The substitutions are quite limited & are done very quickly. I go & know what I'm seeing. Now football can be characterized as choppy IMO.

Football definitely is. I know some coaches who feel the same way I do about college soccer, one of whom coaches in the MLS now and was an assistant at Villanova for a few years.

We can. Given the people and their credentials I have heard say the same thing, I feel pretty good about my position.

Why can't college soccer change on the fly like lacrosse? Would you be for that?

Most coaches favor the current rules. As for changing on the fly, gave that some thought after you first raised it. Just isn't feasible, as it would result in chaos. Unlike in lax, you don't get to hold the ball & or slow it down in transition in order to make your changes. Team not making subs would have a huge advantage in most instances. Would be just to easy to gain possession & be off to the races. In actuality, ref only allows subs in when the play has a momentary stoppage. Most subs don't enter until 25 or 26 minute mark or better. Happens very quickly. Never a stoppage when the ball is played out of bounds. Ball is played back in immediately. Lax clearly has its own flow & pace & is great to watch. Soccer has it's own flow & pace which in my view, as a guy who played in college, is very fast & quick. Know you had to be in great shape & got gassed anyway. Both lax & soccer are great games IMO. Again we just see it differently on this one.

I am sure it will never happen in soccer, but it is fun to think about. It couldn't be any faster than lacrosse, and in fact is much slower. You can't get into scoring position nearly as fast in soccer as you can in lacrosse. Some subbing happens with a clear possession, but a lot happens in transition. That's where most of it happens.

Two different games. And both great.

Instead of giving all the particulars just name the person.

They both are indeed. Hockey does it on the fly too and is in a much smaller space with much less control than soccer.
The much smaller space helps hockey to change on the fly. The much larger field means more time before subs can be in position. The non-changing club has a huge advantage. Just can't work in soccer.

Nor should it have to.. Is there really an impatience factor in the 40 seconds it takes to have a girl run 50 yards ross field then her sub runs 50 yards back to that spot. Is the suggestion that these kids just run wild across the field while play continues

Agreed.

It simply happens too much. From the games I see it really ruins the flow. Like I said, I have spoken to MLS coaches who played D1 and played professionally who agreed. I am not naming names, it doesn't matter. I would bet if you talked to others though it would be the same answer. If done properly, no one is running around wildly. Subbing on the fly can be done with relative ease, especially in the midfield position where more running occurs. But it might create a few more potential scoring opportunities if not done right, which like it or not in America, would be a great thing.

Really appreciate the detailed report, rudad02! Keep them coming when time permits!
Sounds like Mike is going to gradually shorten his bench as he gets a better idea of the youngster play on the pitch. Looks like we've added some needed scoring help. Is defensive depth enough? Starters seem strong.

Thanks 89. IMO defensive depth & personnel are both strong. Some particulars later.

Same here, thanks rudad02. I was disappointed not to see Visco (sp?) against Monmouth. She played tough as a freshman, never give an inch. I think the announcers said injury, anyone know how long she's out?

coaches dont discuss timing but she rolled over her ankle. It should not be long. Nothing has been said about Tierney Wiltshire or nneka Moneme issues

Spoke to Tierney. Said it was a quad issue. Thinks she'll be back for Sunday's game. Don't know about Nneka.

Spoke with Tiernny. Said it was a quad, & thinks she'll be back for this Sunday vs UConn. Don't know anything on Nneka. Sorry for the double post. Didn't think the 1st went through.

With the goal keeper back, I'd expect RU to be in Top 10, even Top 5 ... only a matter of time!!!!
