rumored new DC

Rutgers head coach Chris Ash will hire Jay Niemann as his defensive coordinator, FootballScoop learned Wednesday. Niemann presently serves in the same capacity at Northern Illinois.

Ash and Niemann have known each other for more than 20 years; Niemann was Ash’s position coach when the latter was a safety at Drake in the early 1990’s. While Ash bounced around the country rising the coaching ladder, Niemann’s experience has been spent nearly entirely in the Midwest and West Coast.

Interesting comment from that link:
"Ash has built a staff long on experience across the country — except New Jersey and the Northeast. That, clearly, is something the new Rutgers staff will have to work through as a group. Retaining defensive line coach Jim Panagos and perhaps some others from Kyle Flood’s staff would give the Scarlet Knights’ some necessary institutional knowledge of Rutgers’ home territory."

Pile on anti-Ash guys.

Welcome! Another shrewd hire. Doesn't need to learn how to handle the job, just has to install Ash's D, I like it!

Well, you're not gonna win over the people sexed up by Mike Vrabel and high-priced former power five head coaches that are available , but here's a guy that's been doing it for years and probably knows exactly what Ash expects and wants, which is all that matters.

Niemann's bio: (Guy has achieved great results at NIU):

http://www.niuhuskies.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/niemann_jay00.html
During Niemann’s time at NIU, the Huskies have won the MAC West title each season and claimed three Mid-American Conference championships while boasting one of the best defenses in the league.

The 2014 season saw the Huskie defensive unit force 24 turnovers and hold six opponents to 17 points or less. Six NIU defensive players earned All-MAC honors last season under Niemann’s guidance, including first-team selections Jason Meehan and Paris Logan.

Niemann’s top defensive pupil at NIU, safety Jimmie Ward, wrapped up a stellar collegiate career in 2013 and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 30th overall pick, Ward led the Huskies in tackles in each of his final two years, recording 95 tackles and a career-high seven interceptions in 2013 and 104 stops with three interceptions in 2012.

In 2012, the NIU defense held five opponents to nine points or less en route to a second straight MAC title and a historic berth in the 2013 Orange Bowl. The Huskie defensive unit totaled 40 sacks in 2012, second all-time at NIU.

In all, Niemann’s defense has produced seven players who signed with NFL teams in the last four years. In addition to Ward, Rashaan Melvin, Alan Baxter, Sean Progar, Ken Bishop, Joe Windsor and Pat Schiller have signed with NFL teams since 2011. Ward, Melvin and Bishop - another 2014 draftee - saw action with the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, respectively, in 2014.

But, he's not currently in a bowl or in the NFL.

wasn't that the reason for the delay?

Agreed. We could use a Hafley type the staff. These gents are all mid-west guys. If they cannot coach at least they probably farm. We may have the best 4H club in the northeast. The fact that we are the garden state may be the attraction for these hires.

A GPS will help the new coaches to the high schools. It's the desire, enthusiasm and drive that are going to get the recruits.

NIU has beat many B1G teams while Niemann was DC:
2013- Beat Iowa 30-27; Beat Purdue 55-24;
2014- Beat Northwestern 23-15;
2015- lost to Ohio State 20-13;
They also beat the row the boat guy in 2014 and 2015.

Hope he does well but a little concerned over his lack of Power 5 coaching experience. Playing one or two P5 teams a year is a huge difference over playing them 9 times a year. I'm also wondering why he was hired after the other defensive coaches were hired? I'd have thought you'd try to line up your right hand man before filling in the positions below him but it seems Coach Ash did it completely opposite. Hired the Asst DB and then the DB and now the DC. Just seems odd to me

1. Chris Ash has plenty of P5 and B1G experience.
2. Maybe they were working out details and it was not the right time to announce the DC.

Vrabel was a legit candidate but with Texans most likely playoff bound they will retain the staff

I agree Coach Ash has the experience but you need a solid stable of guys to be successful. IMO having a DC with B1G or NFL experience would have been more ideal. But I'll give Niemann the benefit of the doubt and hope for his success at RU. Just saying this hire isn't as much of a slam dunk as I was hoping for.

the recent bowl game is troublesome, if he is the new dc, one can only hope it will be ash's defense and he will just implement ash's scheme
