What do you think the make up will be for Ash's first full class that is his own?

I am guessing it will be a similar to Flood's in regard to stars since Ash is rebuilding relationships and is an unknown head coach entity vs head coaches with track records at PSU, Mich, Ohio St, UConn, Temple, and elsewhere.

He may have 1 or 2 top 10 NJ recruits but I am guessing it will be a lot of 3 star guys with a couple of transfers. We may get a few Ohio guys from the contacts Ash has from his Ohio St stint. They will probably be guys that Ohio St looked at but did not make the final recruiting cut there since Ohio St gets a lot of 4 and 5 star elite guys. We will probably get a few PA guys but will be guys that PSU, Mich, and Ohio St don't recruit heavily.

If we get 25 recruits in 2017:
5 star recruits - 0
4 star recruits - 2 (both from NJ)
3 star recruits - 16 (10 from NJ with the rest from FL, PA, OH, NY, and elsewhere)
2 star recruits - 7 (mostly from NJ / NY / PA)
expecting 3 to 5 transfers that will go against the 2015 or 2016 classes

How would this be similar to Flood's classes. In Flood's first class he held GS's class together so they were not his recruits. In all of his other classes he had exactly one 4* and that was Barnwell (how did that turn out?)

That's more transfers than usual, and RU hasn't fared well with transfers. What has been more successful, however, are 5th year grad transfers (i.e. Dill, Turzilli). But only 1 or 2 per year,

This is expecting little in regards to inroads made with NJ coaches and athletes. Also lets not forget that these coaches have already been recruiting players from this class. Look how these two O-Lineman have taken notice of Rutgers suddenly because they are drawn to the coach. Now give the Coaches a full year to build new relationships and firm up already existing ones. I forsee the first full class by this staff as much stronger. Perhaps no five stars but SEVEN two stars? Don't think this year's class which still needs to be filled will end up with that many two stars

better way to describe it is top 25-35 ranking class
or more 35-45 ranking or
closer to Flood with 45-55 ranked class.
I guess 30-40 class ranking, an improvement but nothing "great yet"

I would feel great if we got back to the 2-4 4 stars recruits every year we got with Schiano. We had a LOT of 4 stars WR from NJ the last few years but none of them committed to Rutgers. You wonder why no one can replace Carroo?

We have a couple of very talented WR's on the roster. One of them looks very similar to the 2 - 4 stars we had and lost in terms of ability. It is still early yet but from what little I have seen from them all I like our guy just as much as the kid on Temple and the kid on PSU. He needs to get better at turning upfield after making short catches and keep the chains moving. But he is talented and has very good hands as well.

Our other guy seems to have a world of talent. I hope he takes it to the next level in 2016. Even when he has made a lot of catches it seems like the ball is finding him instead of the other way around. If he can put it all together I think he has a pretty high ceiling.

I don't know who will replace Carroo at this moment. He really could do it all when healthy and even did a good job when hobbled. We already missed him for more than half of 2015.

Pretty realistic breakdown and I would be satisfied with this.

Since it's a new staff with existing connections at other programs, I think it's reasonable to expect more transfers than usual (grad or otherwise) as well.

I'm betting it will be BETTER than any class Flood brought in, "full time," lets say (2013, '14, 15).

I love Ash and have high hopes for him. But if he's being marketed as this master recruiter then we had better see instant increases in recruiting for his '17 class. I'm cutting him a lot of on field slack for his first year, but not in recruiting. He needs to put his money where his mouth is. That means better classes than Flood.

While I'm giving this staff a pass in the W/L column, I'm going to be watching recruiting more closely. There has to be a step up - I'd like to see a rank better than 35th for recruiting in 2017 (really, looking for better than 30th). Floods three classes were ranked 45th, 57th, and 53rd.... and there are only 64 P5 schools.

If he gets a class ranked between 30-35 I would be very happy. Some of these 2017 kids have already developed strong relationships with other schools at this point. 2018 will be a truer test of what we can expect going forward. A season of blowouts in 2016 obviously will make the recruiting job that much tougher (thanks to poor recruiting under Flood).

Much of Ash's success (or lack thereof) will be rooted in the 2017 recruiting class.

Right now he's selling change and pedigree - change in culture, change in philosophy, change in energy, etc.... and working with guys who've been there before. He can get around some poor performances this season by selling the next classes on that change and a brighter future to come. Need to ride that wave. He's also brought in a lot of young guys who have had some recruiting success, and Mantz to assist with the NJ landscape and opening some doors. If the 2017 class remains in the 50-60 range, it's not likely to get any easier or better in 2018 all of a sudden.

There needs to be a noticeable step up in recruiting for 2017 if Ash is going to change the program trajectory. I have full confidence that he can do it, but that's going to be the seed of any success over the next 3-4 years.

All the talk about the 2017 class; okay, but what about the 2016 class? Plenty of openings still there. I doubt Coach Ash has given up on that and is just focusing on 2017. I'd love to see a couple (more?) surprises for the 2016 class.
