Rutgers Baseball Hosts Illinois in Final Home Series

RU only had four hits but we hit many hard shots. Illinois hurt themselves by hitting four of our batters and walking several as well. We got lucky but a win is a win. Hopefully we can have more offense tomorrow.

Senior Day under the lights at Bainton Field.

Going for the series win against the Illini!

After yesterday’s victory over Illinois, d1baseball.com has Rutgers as one of the last 5 out in their Bubble Watch section (Field of 64 update). Who’d have thought earlier in the season that we’d be at the cusp this late in the season?

First 5 Out

UC Irvine lost to CSUN, 10-15.

Virginia Tech lost to Clemson, 4-15.

Oklahoma beat Gonzaga, 5-2.

USC beat Arizona State, 4-1.

Rutgers beat Illinois, 5-4.

That 3 game sweep by #9 ranked UConn early in the season looms large. We were in and could have won all three of those games but the bullpen was a disaster.

Had to turn away. Top of 2nd, Conover gave up lead off single, then a walk, then another walk, then a hit batsman, then another hit batsman, then another walk- all with no outs. RU now trails 3-1, bases still loaded, new pitcher in. I’ll check back in an hour.

Getting hammered (7 run deficit) despite each team’s number of hits being about the same.

In order to make the NCAA tourney 2023 Rutgers baseball needs to win the B1G tourney . We needed to win out from Illinois to Minnesota and the loss today hurts . Even 40 wins this year will not be enough and as someone posted the 3 loss series to UConn is why we still are considered mediocre in the college baseball world. The name of the game is pitching… we have a few now but we need more TOP level guys. Owens is a very good coach but until we see NJ top pitchers stay home it will be the same next year and for years after. California, Texas has plenty of arms and if UConn can recruit them so can dear old Rutgers. Where is our next Bobby Brownlie?

We gave today's game away. After leading 1-0 we let Illinois score 5 runs in the second. As I recall they had an infield single followed by 3 walks and 2 hit batters to put us behind 3-1. Two others scored on one single. Shortly afterwards Axelson hit a homerun to bring us to 5-2. In the fourth I believe Illinois scored 4 more runs helped also by walks and a single or two and we made two errors. We trailed 9-2 and made a nice comeback but we fell short 9-7 in the 9th. We need to win tomorrow at noon in Lakewood. I attended today & yesterday but unfortunately will not be able attend tomorrow. I hope many RU fans can attend and that we can win tomorrow to win the series. I still think we can make the NCAA if we can win tomorrow and defeat Minnesota and Albany and play real well in the BIG 10 Tournament. We do have some very good hitters but we need to add a couple of really good pitchers for next season.

They didn’t let anything… Illinois can hit and is much better than their record. We need to win tomorrow no excuses.

You are not making the NCAA unless we win out and at worse finish 2nd in B1G tourney. Sound familiar to last season? Almost exactly the same.

Rutgers is a quality baseball team no doubt but so are 5-6-7 others in conference. Where the B1G lacks is in the pitching department. Same with most in conference.

I wonder if the change of location affected attendance? The price couldn’t deter anyone. Was the game paired with a high school county championship game?

The wife and I along with my daughter and her BF made it to the game. Beautiful day for baseball. Guys played well. Enjoyed the game.

No other game today. Crowd was sparse. Seemed to be mostly player families. Great day for a game. Couldn't ask for nicer weather.

Was at the game … must say the RU fielding is top notch … great weather, great game , great pitching and an 8th inning dinger over the 400 ft mark in CF … can’t ask for a better day than that!

Team talent and competition level is picking up. Do need a few more arms and hitters for depth, but overall moving in right direction.

Some interesting things I saw when I looked at the Big Ten stats. Brito has only struck out 5 times in league play. He was giving up 4 in a game out of the gate. If it weren't for that awful season opening slump, he would be at about .330 or so now. Cudos to him and the batting coach for turning his season around.

Despite his tough outing on Saturday, Conover is still in 7th place in ERA in league play (Coppola is 2nd). RU has the lowest team ERA in Big Ten play and has allowed the fewest total runs.

The team is sixth in runs scored in league games. I thought they would be higher this year. They did have a couple of very tough early season injuries in Santa Maria and Vargas. They would have been the second baseman and primary DH. Love did a great job for a long time but has faded in conference play a bit. (Thought we might see a little more Maximus Martin for the pop he has.) Cohen has also faded in conference play and is hitting sub .200 in the Big Ten. Sleight has a bit as well.

I can see a good run in the tournament if these guys pick it up again and Brito and Lasko stay on their roles. Sinibaldi and Marshall pitching well today gives me hope for the tournament where pitching depth is such a big deal.

Congratulations to our baseball team. We need to defeat Albany and win in Minnesota and play well the the Big Ten Tournament. Go RU.
We need to win the next 4 and win the B1G tourney to be certain otherwise we could get screwed again.
