Rutgers Baseball Not Selected To NCAA Tournament

Agreed, the ACC is a better baseball conference, but wins and losses on a field should count more than RPI Rankings.

It seems like the selection committee took the at-large teams from the RPI Rankings order.

Rutgers RPI was 42 on May 29, 2022.

The Big Ten need representation on the selection committee.

You can't post this without SOS. There were 4 teams in the TOP 50 with a SOS over #100....

Texas State SOS #114, RPI #26
Rutgers SOS # 147, RPI #42
UConn SOS #181, RPI #43
UCSB SOS #177, RPI #44

UConn and UCSB made the tourney by winning their conference. Tx State didn't but was 7-7 vs Quad 1 and a combined 16-9 vs Top 100. RU was 8-8. I wanted RU to make it but all the standards of measure were against them after losing to Michigan for the 3rd time in 4 tries. Heck, RU was 3-7 vs the Top 5 seeds in the B1G Tourney.

I doubt he'll say anything, except how well Rutgers played this year.
And that is what a HC should do. Owens is a true professional running this program. You use this “ screw job” to motivate your returning players and the staff to work hard and go out and find some more top arms.

This from the NC State athletic director on the Wolfpack being snubbed;
"We are shocked and disappointed that our baseball team did not receive a bid to the NCAA Tournament. We hurt for our student-athletes and coaches who worked so hard and who we believe deserved this opportunity."

Anything from RU other than Todd Frazier's wonderful tweets?

No and why would we expect that to happen? Why would anyone other than a former pro MLB player and graduate of Rutgers have the sense to let the team’s disappointment be made known. Rutgers doesn’t want to be accused of being sore losers here. This wasn’t some 2nd class team that won 45 games. The problem is our leadership doesn’t look like they really care. Hobb’s has been very quiet on this. Maybe he’ll take the high road and just let it go without saying.

Which team and resume do we deserve in ahead of … sorry but can’t see an at-large resume worse than ours that made it. Can’t say it was a total farce in that case

Trying to figure out the best way to dust off my "automatic bids ruin post-season tournaments" posts from March.
Should I copy the text or just link to the posts?

Maybe advocating for a 64 team tournament to actually include the 64 best teams isn't such a hot take anymore?

what will making a statement accomplish?

I'm hoping that Hobbs DID make a statement, just not publicly. I'm hoping he talked to that smug Army AD who led the committee

You have to go on the offense against the ncaa when stuff like this happens. When A&M got snubbed from the NCAA MBB tourney…their coach let the committee have it…you can just go “oh gosh darn it…so close”

Could not agree more. We need to make a case for ourselves and not sit here trying to rationalize a middling Ole Miss or FSU deserve it over us.

make a case? decision was made . its over.

I don't disagree with the stance that our side should be vocal over the snub. They should be. Its free press where you get other people to write about your accomplishments. And maybe somehow if we're in the same position next season you might be some guilty feeling votes that turn favorable. Either way ... complaining publicly, as long as its not super whiny, probably is a worthy cause.

I think the baseball world is talking about NC State, but not Rutgers, so I think a statement and some attention to this beyond your fan base is in order. If the 9th-place team from some leagues are good enough, then leaving out a team with 44 wins in a P5 conference (even a weak one) should require some explanation.

Maybe it will make a difference in the future...

its the same reason why the 9th place big ten or ACC team in some years makes hoops Tourny while 2nd place mid Major team doesn’t.

Rutgers has very little eye popping wins. There’s no explanation needed

They had some nice wins : beat 30-26 Richmond; shut out A-10 champ and NCAA bound 40-18 VCU by a score of 8-0;beat 28-24 Hawaii; beat 33-15 Penn ; beat 36-19 Iowa; beat NCAA bound Maryland and Michigan. They swept Houston Baptist, UNCW, Bowling Green, Minnesota, Ohio State and Nebraska. Their entire body of work and especially their offensive prowess warrant more than passing consideration. They did have some hiccups -losses to P'ton and Seton Hall were awful, but they are in-state rivals.

Very few top 25 win..the teams the got in over them had a handful of top 25 wins.

Besides what Ru Husky pointed out to you , RU Baseball was top 5 on the country in almost every statistical offensive category , hits , BA , doubles , runs scored , RBI ‘s .Plus they were an elite defensive team . Plus they can long ball you to a mercy victory or small ball you with bunts, stolen bases , first to third , etc. They are a fundamentally sound really good baseball team that were missing top end starting pitching only. Losing toMaryland or Iowa or Michigan is no shame.. especially when Cimillo got hurt. The cowards on the Selection Committee protected the good old southern boys. Go watch the Iowa’s Coach press conference after they lost to Michigan and his railing about how flawed the RPI is and how northern teams are at a severe disadvantage.

Well this Northern team was pretty steady and consistent all year . They were not a 6 or 7 place team but a 2nd place team in the regular season and in the tourney where they didn’t get the benefit of double elimination.
There is no justifiable reason the committee shit the bed except that they never watched our team play . Anyone with a quarter of a brain and eyes knew we were a tourney team that had a shot to win a regional. This is not like the 69th team in basketball . Our team has staying power. Stop with any bullshit that this team did not belong. It is all bullshit. We did not just beat Quad 4 teams , we annihilated them. Feel absolutely terrible for our guys. They deserved to have smart adults on the committee and got a bunch of idiots.

I never said we didn’t belong…any team on the bubble “belongs”…

but again look at the top 25 records between us and the other schools that got in over us. That’s the difference.

Yea, we are at a disadvantage as a northern school. Much harder for us to get in…100%. Which is why the SHU and Princeton losses killed us..unfortunately couldn’t afford those types of losses. Southern schools with tougher skeds would be.

we certainly made our case. Every season in every sports..teams that make their cases get shutout of tourneys. Just the way it is.

let’s not get shutout next year! As you said..that means better pitching and a tougher schedule.

My opinion is that yes, the schedule was so horrible that they really have no gripe. Instead of a road trip to Hawaii, maybe try Texas or the southeast, and get some legit teams on the schedule (and not Houston Baptist, LOL). Nobody is impressed by running up big offensive statistics against the caliber of team on that schedule.

However, the 9th place team in ACC/SEC is getting because of strength of schedule, even though they didn't win that many of those tough games. Maybe don't make it so easy to pick them over Rutgers next year by making a stink about it this year...

ESPN Properties - follow the money.

How many Big ten college baseball games were on ESPN?

There are plenty of SEC/B12 and ACC teams RU could play in Feb/early March when it is still frigid in the northeast.

The Hawaii trip was arranged by the previous coach. Owens couldbt get out of it. (that sounds strange even saying that anyone would want to cancel a trip to Hawaii)

That's Litterio for you. Guy thought he was on a 5yr. all expenses paid vacation .

That’s nonsense as Hawaii plays very good baseball and has for years. We went 2-2 and the trip is an experience for the players. Hawaii finished 28 -22 against some good OOC teams ( which included Rutgers as well as teams in the Big West. Playing Hawaii didn’t prevent us from a bid. Playing bad and losing to teams like Princeton , Seton Hall , Wagner, Rider,NjIT, St.Peters and Lafayette now there in lies the problem. But hey what do I know Rutgers baseball past and present.

C’mon, we didn’t lose to Wagner, Rider,NJIT St. Peter’s or Lafayette . In fact we beat them pretty soundly. Why did you include them? I said it at the time that the losses to Princeton and Seton Hall were particularly hurtful.

Because beating those teams by football scores in the long term was as good as a LOSS. We proved nothing to the committee and we paid for it in the end. Nice batting practice but for some to include Hawaii as a team we shouldn’t have played in a 4 game series is plain stupid. Hawaii baseball has been in a downturn for awhile but those saying it was a mistake just don’t get it. After 2 + years of bubble living the trip was like a reward . We should be playing West Coast teams and some from the SEC yearly.

That’s silly. Do you think we would have made the tourney if those bad wins were losses to Wake Forest, UConn, Liberty and UCLA. I think not.

But, I certainly agree with you that a serious upgrade to the schedule is needed and following UConn’s example is an easy roadmap for Ownens and Hobbs to follow.

You’ll never know it is immaterial now .I explained before what type teams we need to schedule. The same people on here who for years thought Fred Hill’s schedule at the beginning of the season was bordering on being a masochist now complain it’s not tough enough. Facts here are that these schedules normally are completed well before any season. Those teams you mentioned are consistently good. For me I think we deserved better. Having a previous appearance recently certainly would have been yo Rutgers favor. Better times ahead for RU baseball under Steve Owens.
