BB Recruiting Rutgers Basketball lands nation's 8th best scorer in transfer G Tyson Acuff

The more I think about it, the more I think we’re tapped out of NIL….because of the timing. Rather than aiming higher ($$) in the guard pool, Pike takes this guy right away since he knows he can’t afford better and doesn’t want to completely strike out by waiting too long.

Either that or he’s hoping to impress this guy to hopefully land his cousin next year.

You never fail to find new and interesting ways to show us what a moron you are.

18 points against Oakland, who beat Kentucky in the first round of the tourney.

Cam Spencer only had 2 games at plus 24 points this season (25 points in 2 games).

Only Rutgers player to score 24 points in a B1G game this season was Mawot Mag. Ha!

Last season, not a single Rutgers player scored 24 or more points in a single game.

The last player to score 24 or more points in a game was Ron Harper Jr on January 8, 2022. He and Geo had multiple plus 24 point games.

Keep complaining, haters.

He took 27 shots in that big ten game to score 24 points! Lol

If we let Jwill, Hyatt , Cam, Ron etc take 27 shots a game they may have been able to score more 24 points in the big ten.

And that might be why we’re taking him. Other than that, he’s ranked the #180 portal recruit according to 247sports.com
I believe Cam Spencer wasn’t ranked in the top 100 transfers when we got him. Despite you calling everyone dumb being optimistic about a guy after watching some of his film, it’s even more dumb to just go based off of rankings on a website.

being optimistic isn't dumb. judging players on their highlight tapes is, where they never miss a shot or turn the ball over. Myles Johnson looked like Bill Russell in his highlight tape, all 8 seconds of it.

we needed a guard that can score. we got a guard that can score.

dont understand the issue.

we know we dont have endless NIL $. so considering that....we needed a guard that can score and we got a guard that can score.

seems like a very solid pick up all things considered.

Anyone interested in seeing Acuff play in a game instead of just highlights can watch Eastern Michigan vs Michigan from December 16, 2023 on BTN+. He had an off shooting night from deep going 0-7 from 3, but went 10-20 from 2 with Michigan’s best defender on him. I don’t think he was assisted on any of his scoring.

Then watch Ru vs Michigan at the RAC and you will see Rutgers look like the number 1 offense on the country. Same team in the same year! O-7. From 3! We need shooters and we have 3 in Acuff, Jwill, and Jmike who are worse the DS from 3 and that’s saying a lot !

Yo be fair we have to wait and see the final product next year.

Wasn’t this the worst Michigan team in decades?
Also, Simpson had 19 @ Michigan.

Really nobody knows how Acuff will play at this level.

I mentioned earlier, everyone got hyped up because Austin Williams had a good game against #1 (?)Baylor in the NCAA Tournament.

Thanks for pointing that out!! 180 overall is a high target. Top 10 or 15% of the portal. Great pickup this early!!

Great story except it’s flat out not true. Acuff has never, in 4 seasons, shot worse than Derek’s better year from long range.

And if you only want to look at frosh/soph seasons his first 2 season at Duquesne, Acuff was a combined 36.2% from 3.

My apologies 28.2 vs 29.2! Flat out knock down shooter at Eastern Mich vs Big ten !

I guess you haven't watched it then? Because it's there.
If it was farther than 3 feet from the rim it wasn't on the highlight tape I watched. Mentioned it before, but tape I saw made it seem as if Martini was the guy they were going to let beat them from deep. To his credit, he did this year pretty often.

29.2% was Acuff’s worst season. The prior two seasons he was 39.4% and 34.4%.

He only took 34 threes as a frosh which is why I blended his two seasons at Duquesne.

So I am curious, do you believe his blended rate of 39. 4 from 3-5 years ago is more accurate than last season when he shot the ball 500 plus times and only 29%? I hope you’re right ! We have too many guys currently who are identical type players.

Can’t wait for the analytics posters next year with all of the mid range games that will be on display for RU

Getting the right guys to ave 80 per game. 24-6 and a 4 in the tourney

How does Acuff compare to our outgoing portal players? That would be most likely a helpful data point for you.

Yes

Previously he had other scoring options on the team which is much more of a relevant scenario then his final year on a bad team where he was the only option. Other teams defense solely focused on him and he's forced to jack up a bunch of tough forced shots

Why would you think last season would be more relevant to his role and shot selection that he will have at RU?

Do you think he just forgot how to shoot or became a worse shooter last year?

Neither. Average all of it together.

The team wasn 't good. How many times did Tyson get ball with 4 seconds on shot clock and had to force a shot. Last year % was fine.

Good question! I honestly think he’s a minor upgrade from Simpson. His high ppg is clearly due to high volume shooting, many more shots. His % from 3 isn’t good and he takes a lot of midrange shots.

🧢 - coach smoke
I saw that man that’s a wild admission for a Rutgers coach to make. But it provides transparency into how little NIL we have for the portal but I think we knew that as we watched guys leave and watched who our real targets are in the portal.

Last I checked career 32.8% is a lot better than 25.2% from 3. Not just a little. Exaggerate much?
Guess what. Simpson is a much higher rated portal player. About 40 spots higher.

This year’s stats please ? As stated, probably a bit of an upgrade. Will he finish at the rim as often in our conference ? No.

The MAC lens is not the same, just like we think Simpson will fare better in the A10.

He’s Simpson with more experience and a very similar skill set.

Sure - since you asked. This year Simpson shot 30.5% from the field - worst in D1. Acuff was a much more respectable 43.2%. He wasn’t good from 3, but he was still better than Simpson. Overall, much better shooting numbers. It’s not even close. I’m sure Simpson is a better defensive player but if we’re talking about shooting there’s no argument.

Time will tell. Playing D affects O, plus very different level of competition.
