a question was raised elsewhere as to when we were first labeled this, and by whom...

I am fairly sure that it was around the time that Sonny Werblin had influence with the Rutgers program, possibly mid-70's or so.

anyway, does anybody remember?

knew it.... first of many snarky remarks...... yes, they giant never awoke fully..
Not intended to be snarky, just the reality of what I've heard marketed about Rutgers since 1979. Its brutal being a fan of the State University of New Jersey (the Chicago Cubs may be the only exception), but regardless, like many others here, I bleed Scarlet!

Right now our focus is to get out of the cellar

Nothing snarky. The dam Jersey Giant is in a coma. Here's hoping the giant wakes the hell up.

When the Big East FC was formed in 1991. Most pundits said that RU would benefit most. Too bad it ended up being VT.

It goes back to the 70's or early 80's

Maybe source would know

Clearly its been a giant with insomnia, sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.

Can't stop laughing about this post. Think it started after the 1st game in 1869. Too many bumps on the head over the course of 150 or so years.

Believe you are in the park with the 1970s. Perhaps it goes back shortly after the school decided they would be "bigger time" in 1972. There was a report issued in the late 1970s-early 1980s about the status and possible future of the sports programs at Rutgers. That is where I remember the phrase "sleeping giant" was first heard supporting the conclusion of that report.

Maryland and Rutgers are, if we simply could coach and keep home talent home, we should kick ass.

Yeah we've been noting but a Giant Tease to fans and are now a giant (maybe) money source to the B1G.

Well at least you may have a decent coach now. Firing Friedgen for Edsall? What the hell was your AD thinking?

Well the long story short was Ralph was looking to retire. He had almost no one left on staff.

As you know James Franklin wanted our head coach position. We did not want him, because he is a sleazy used car salesman. So he was going to take a lof of people with him. We'd have to hire a new staff for Ralph for a final 2-3 years before Ralph retired.

Ralph could coach, but he couldn't recruit. So rather than wait 2-3 years and rebuild again we set about rebuilding right away.

In steps Under Armour, and if a move was going to be made, they placed Mike Leach in the lalp of admin. Well our president and Board of regents screwed up and thought Leach was to risky and at the last moment, canceled the deal and we got stuck with Edsall. A good person but a horrible coach in every sense of the word at the college level.

Now, Edsall is gone and Under Armour delivered us Dan Mullen. Well I do not want to get into how that got messed up, but we interviewed lots of people and the best interviews were DJ Durkin and Ken Niumatalolo. We just couldn't stomach the triple option so we went with DJ Durkin

DJ is everything Edall isn't. He can recruit, is energetic, smiles, doesn't make excuses, gets alogn with people and gets big time college football.

Any coaching hire is a crap shoot, but at least fundraising and recruiting is going to go very well.

All I remember is their were a few blaring headlines in the local papers with this quote by either a prominent coach or tv analyst..... It makes sense that it came near the decision to upgrade our football schedule beyond the Lehigh and Bucknells of the world, and probably 1972 is a good guess
