Took 5 yrs, but Rutgers is back to Schiano baseline. What’s the next step?

The problem with that is that the experienced, senior laden defense was pretty bad for RU this year. I know there were a lot injuries but that isn’t the first time that has happened. The offense in many ways carried the defense in Nov. Iowa could be a type of model but I think RU will have to be different in some ways.
It’s never happened to the extent it happened this year.

Perhaps our nest athletic Director needs to come from Wall Street instead of Texas or Stanford.

I also think it’s time to consider turning the athletic department into a nonprofit entity that is not bound by all of the university constraints. They would be free to raise and spend money in ways. They currently are not able to based on university internal dynamics.

I agree that Iowa is a good example. The occasional great year but constant 7-5 and 8-4. Also beating Penn state for once needs to happen to be taken seriously

I've always thought that there's no reason we can't be like Iowa and Wisconsin. Some of you who have been around a while will probably recall the poor teams those schools rolled out through most of the 70's and into the 80's before Hayden Fry and Barry Alvarez arrived at each school. Neither of those schools have the inherent advantages of OSU, UM or state penn.
Rutgers should be better than the Farm Schools Because we have significantly higher population density within an hour radius, which is where we should be getting most of our players. But those schools fans have been investing in their football programs for generations and we are still trying to catchup. This is why they recruit better because they have stronger value propositions.

Everything is not always about the almighty dollar (except your posts lol). "Those schools" have been invested in taking our best athletes FOR YEARS going way back to the 60's (and probably earlier) when Rutgers wasn't D1/FBS/P4 or whatever you want to call it. Going out of state to play top level football, probably getting something for it, same for their coaches..those other schools built those relationships and then we had to catch up with "The State of Rutgers" and "Fencing the Garden" lol.

Now even Schiano knows he has to go back outside of Jersey and even beyond just Florida to get his players. Fla, Ga, NC, MD, heck even Minny. Its a National search anymore.

Why were the best recruits going out of state since the 60’s? Because they thought they were getting better value for their time and better experiences. Why play before an empty stadium when they can play before a full stadium? Why practice/prepare in spartan facilities when you can prepare in the best facilities money can buy?

Kids could see on their recruiting visits that out of state football programs prioritized football success while Rutgers did not.

Literally nothing has changed. We have to go out of state because we can’t recruit enough quality instate players. We should be getting the bulk of our class from instate players because we have the advantage of proximity. But Jersey kids are seeing better value elsewhere.

If it were only about relationships, Rutgers would be winning Championships. Greg has been building relationships for 16 years while head coach at Rutgers. I think that’s good enough.
Greg is on kids since their freshman year. We’re not losing kids due to relationships.

We’re losing kids because other schools have stronger value propositions. We can close the gap. What Greg needs is better NIL support and a Fieldhouse. Other schools even Syracuse, do both these days and we need both.

I wonder if it makes more sense for RU to put money into player development with top assistant coaches and facilities rather then NIL. Learn , play, earn.

We have top assistants, which we’ve invested in. IE it doesn’t get better than Flats.

We need Fans to pony up for Facilities and/or NIL.
Once $75M is raised from Fans, Rutgers will start work on the Fieldhouse. The designs are ready to go.

I don’t think everyone gets this. You have some on here who keep throwing the injuries are a part of the game line. I don’t think we had one starter who wasn’t either out or questionable on D for the UCLA game. Thats insane

Caveat to this - UCLA’s QB can’t run. That rushing TD shouldn’t have happened against Howard’s D. And considering it was a one score loss, the coaches have to take some responsibility there.

I didn't mean to suggest we don't have good staff. I love that we have spent more there. That might still be a worthwhile area to spend more on to retain and attract strong candidates for the inevitable coaching carousel.
