Rutgers Cracks $2B In Endowment

Wonder if there is an event in 2006 anyone could point to that led to this? 🤔
Rutgers kicked off a 1B campaign. Took 7 1/2 years to get there. Note: get to 1B, not grow by 1B. Administration finally realized all of these schools that were behind us, were now ahead of us to some extent due to superior financial resources. Money is required. As was stated above. Still not enough. We are still punching below our weight!

Yeah, we're 13th out of 14 B1G schools in endowment and Maryland is literally right behind us by 1 spot for 70th nationally.

Long ways to go. We’ve grown in this area but only from a nonexistent state to one with a pulse.

the school has professionals in place with a plan and experience . It’s a long game that requires so many factors to help accelerate it. The profile of the school is super important to inspire the corporations and rich alumni to “be part of it” by partnering and giving $$

The size of the endowment is important. But to judge how well or poorly the endowment is being managed you have to look at its relative performance and ranking versus other university endowments.

In the last ten years Rutgers has significantly moved up the rankings from #110 to #69. By contrast, UConn and Rutgers endowments were similarly sized coming out of the Global Financial Crisis. UConn’s latest reported AUM is around $600M.

Agreed, we aren’t where we should be. But we absolutely have the right team to get us there.

I agree. We should celebrate how far we have come. It is credible how poorly we fared in the past compared to where we are now To clarify this increase is strictly increase/decrease in the fund. Incorporates returns, donations, outlays, etc
What is a good objective? Flagship school in an affluent area. Top 30?

Lol and UConn said that they should've gotten into the B1G over us. Their endowment isn't even in the Top 200 nationally. They'd be a lead anchor financially compared to the other B1G schools who are all Top 70 nationally and all have endowments over $2B outside of Maryland who has an endowment of $1.993B.

Good question. Aggressive goal should be top 10 among public universities. We are #25 if I counted correctly.

How much of getting to 2B is market upswing vs new donations?

All relative when comparing us to others as they are enjoying the same market value increase.

I don’t have the numbers. But almost all new donations have historically gone to current projects, for example the Big 10 Build. A small proportion has gone into endowments which in contrast support projects in perpetuity.

No excuse for why Rutgers shouldn't be in the top 35 schools . We have a large alumni base with many deep pockets and cannot continue expecting the state to amp up the money. Also the size of the endowment impacts our USNWR university ranking.

All of these sacred protected tax payer enabled “endowments “ to what end. These institutions with their tax favored status are dividing and destroying our country. All of these universities should not be allowed to be huge profit centers that use tax payer $ to further the liberal agenda, with ruinous polices and values that do not represent America.

Whoa.

Looking at that list it's obvious that the publics who got into building the endowment early are being rewarded. Michigan #10, Virginia #17 and UNC # 27 have been at this for 75 years and it shows. RU was very late to the game and is now making progress. However, what it also means and is that is RU has to do even better than the early movers to close the gap.

UT and Texas A&M got the oil money Texas was so wise to allocate to those schools. Maybe there should be a 5 cent per slice charge on NJ pizza to help close the gap.

BTW, you want to see a school with alumni that give, look at Williams with 1600 students and a #29 ranking. Per student they blow everybody away.

If you believe there are 2 sexes and don’t feel like you want to be force fed and dictated ridiculous pronouns
Probably best not to give a single penny to theses unscientific, socialist communist. You should also be lobbying to end tax favored status of these Confucius center funded Marxist institutions
Look up how many state residents actually get to take advantage of the state’s engineering school, funded by tax payer $
With a $100 million facility upgrade. There are far more residents from Shanghai then Hoboken, benefiting from those tax $$$$

Our rise in these ranking has little to with relative performance. It’s all about the relative fundraising. RU has a huge alumni base in a wealthy state, it’s endowment should have been larger. Now with alumni engagement mostly driven off of athletic success (it is what it is) those relative contributions are what’s driving the increase in the rankings. I believe RU also recategorized some internal dollars toward endowment. Not to the same extent Penn State did to drive their big move up on this list.

Twaddle

Oh by the way, to the extent there are students from Shanghai they are paying full freight. That's what's tempting about enrolling them. The residents of Hoboken, if they qualify, receive financial aid funded by the endowment.

Yes other things lead to alumni engagement. High academic rankings and having very rich alumni too. Also generally private funded institutions rely on it and so have long histories of giving. That history led to a lot of compounding. Unfortunately for RU the state was supposed to take care of it and we’ve had a lack of state pride particularly for the state U.

Your suggestion is to shut down all American Universities since they are all run by communists Or lock up all the educators.

Did you go to college?

Did you? You must not have gotten a good grade on reading comprehension
Never said to shut down all university’s
I said remove their tax favored status

Great news and agree that the football resurgence in 2006 definitely increased alumni engagement and donations, etc. that is a no brainer and in line with what Holloway was saying about the importance of athletics in showcasing the university to the world. However, the other big event that contributed to this was the acquisition of the 2 medical schools in NB and Newark. Received a portion of the overall UMDNJ endowment (minus Camden) and essentially added to the alumni base.

“Probably best not to give a single penny to theses unscientific, socialist communist.” Your quote

MBA Rutgers but I see you never mentioned graduating college
I see you are unsuccessfully doubling down on those reading comprehension skills
Not a good advertisement for a Rutgers MBA 😂

It wasn’t large by any stretch but definitely added. It’s also brought more people under the RU flag which will help long term.

Yea, I always hated it when my calculus, chemistry and English drama to 1642 professors insisted upon that "liberal agenda." WTF?
