Rutgers defensive backs are pretty good

But the DBs should be playing 10 yards off of the line of scrimmage. (I think I remember seeing that during the glory defensive years of 2014 & 2015.)

other than one or two breakdowns Iowa had no one open most of the day and that says a lot as RU had very little pass rush.

... and we had at least two "coverage" sacks.

Austin and Wharton are playing very well, and I like freshman Damon Hayes. None of them can get hurt, though, after that we have a very big drop off.

They had a pretty decent game today. But we don't yet know how good Iowa's passing game is this season; typically it's not their strongest thing. But we had a number of plays on D where our coverage was perfect.

We'll learn more next week, although we're going to get totally stomped.

Hard to tell if it is because Iowa's receivers aren't that good, but aside from a DB falling and a few other miscue's Iowa QB had no where to go with the ball.

Hester appreared to make critical mistakes on both of Iowa's touchdown plays. Each time charging up to the middle and leaving the side open for the big play.

He got fooled on that play. That is part of gaining experience and getting wiser.
Looked like he got caught QB watching and the WR made him pay for it. If that WR was his responsibility (as opposed to another of our DBs having a blown coverage) then he'll get an eye and earful in the film room tomorrow (presumably) and he'll learn from it.

One thing I've noticed in the past couple games about Hester. He really likes to really hit. Sometimes, that causes him to miss tackles because he comes in too hot. But those misses will go away with experience and then he'll be hitting even harder.

I think we have some great young defensive backs. That lets you do a lot of different things on defense. As these guys improve RU will have a good defensive unit.
They are finally starting to cover people better, but they continue to not turn their head around to locate the ball in coverages. At this rate only the safeties will have any chance for an interception. We have enough opportunities to make plays, but we don't look. Don't know if it's the coaching or something else, but we're still chasing receivers when the ball could be intercepted or knocked down.

I thought the DB's played well. Even when we put pressure or sacked Beathard, I thought the coverage had a lot to do with it since I am not sure we had one blitz situation where our guys go through unimpeded. We struggle to get pressure with 4 and thus if we bring extras we need to get there faster. Late in the game we were in an empty backfield situation and Iowa blitzed and no one touched the guy.

best looking play I have seen back there in years. The couple of times they didn't turn was because the WO didn't turn either and the ball was throw behind them.

Excited to see this...If we had an offense that could finish drives and this D continues we could have a solid finish after OSU/UM games. (IF somehow Grant can get back on the field by then)

I thought he missed a couple throws to some open receivers today, BUT RU also should have had a couple picks. QB had two tipped balls, one fell too far from Cioffi, and the other was actually completed to another WR for a first down. One of the db's dropped a pick, too, but it was a tough play.

But they did face one of the most accurate throwers. Guy has an impressive TD/Int ratio.

Yes, a couple of the sacks were after the Qb. had plenty of time to throw
