Notice he didn't say it actually protects better...it doesn't. That being said, I could see the weight differential meaning something at the highest levels.

That is a very big weight difference, assuming protection is the same. The whole team should wear them.
 
Hopefully the rugby tackling technique Ash will be installing with also help with these types of injuries.
