Rutgers Makes the Cut, Jalen Carey Top 6

Flnj86 on the SHU site is now claiming that RU paid $$$ to land Mathis. This is one of the lowest statements or accusations I have ever seen on a rivals site. This is really pathetic by that poster.

It is pathetic to make that accusation. But this kinda stuff does happen in college hoops

It is funny now. When I was at RU thirty plus years ago we were in Atlantic Ten. Went head to head with Seton Hall over players like Bryan Caver. Seton Hall always won those battles. Now maybe because we are in Big Ten we will win those battles over schools like UCONN. Maybe Mathis wants to beat Maryland because I guess they never offered him a schollie.

I think SHU paid-off Gruninger for that disastrous decision, he just couldn't have been that stupid....right?
Didn't he passed up the Big East because Paterno said he wanted to have Rutgers as part of a big (not B) eastern conference that he wanted to build?

It wouldn't make sense for us to take another guard in 2018.
Baker, McClung,Mensah
Mathis,Kiss

These are all starter quality material.

It's awesome to see Rutgers up there, but I do not think it will happen.

We gotta take a 4* PG w/offers like that. Mensah may or may not work out as a B1G starter and McClung could use a year or 2 at back-up PG. Plus if Carey is that good he may be looking at the NBA after 1 or 2 years in college ball.

If Carey wants to come you definitely take him. He is that good. I have seen him several times.I think he scored like 43 points against Roselle Catholic.

Read an article about 2-3 years ago regarding Gruninger and it was stated that Freddie boy was the sort of guy who somehow held the belief he was smarter than everyone else, (an attitude which apparently grated on a lot of people with whom he came in contact). -Quite an amazing feat for somebody who went around doing just about everything wrong during his tenure as RU's AD. ...Oh well, "a legend in his own mind", as the saying goes. But the truly sad thing is, of course, the negative impact his imagined personal "genius" had on Rutgers athletics across the board.

Thank GOD we finally have an AD who actually KNOWS what he's doing. -Man, is that ever a refreshing change!

For all Fred's fault he's the only athletic director that's ever been on the job when RU made the NCAA tournament!

its Branon knight, he is an excellent recruiter and very well known in basketball circles. He was a all american point guard and is still in his thirties. Kids will gravitate towards him.

It is strange as we are the only team in red and the other 5 are in white. We are in the center and shooting the ball. We could dream can't we?
BULLSEYE!

Absolutely. Gotta make a push for him. As Shack mentioned, Pikiell could always run three guards. Do most teams run three guards all game? No. But it happens often.

You get to the tournament by having great depth, not just decent depth. That is what Rutgers is shaping to look like. A backup who has the same step as the starter.

I checked the box score on Carey's game vs. Roselle Catholic. It was on Feb 12, 2017 at RC. He scored 37 points not 43. He had 7 two point fg's, 6 threes and 5 free throws. Winston was the only other Immaculate Conception player to hit double figures with 19.He visited RU with Carey a while back. RC led 20-17 after the first quarter. IC outscored RC 27-10 in the second quarter to lead 44-30. Carey had 25 at the half. He was unstoppable. RC stormed back in the third to lead 59-58 at the end of the period. RC wound up winning 86-74 as Naz Reid dominated down low in the second half. IC had no one to stop him. Reid finished with 36 points. Both Carey and Reid put on a show. Carey did still score 12 in the second half but RC was doubling him all the time. As I said before if he wants to come to RU you definitely take him. He can play!!!!! The game became a sort of contest between Carey & Reid. Both were trying to out do the other but did not of course guard one another.

Having Carey and Mathis as freshman guards would be devastating and with Baker, Souf coming off the bench...wow!!! You can't have enough quality guards!! Coach is a big believer that you need big time quality depth at the guard position.

Last night's commitment of Quinerly to AZ I think really opens up Villanova as the favorite here for Carey (alongside Cuse IMO)

Don't forget McClung....I think he is going to be very good.

Add Thiam and I think Pikiell plays 3 guards, so you need 6......probably 7. That leaves 6 for the PF and C spots. I think we see less Centers and more long athletic PF types. I don't see any Getty or Doorson types in Pikiell's future teams.

If you look around college basketball rosters, they are guard heavy. That's the trend.

Knights, were you on the Seton Hall board? Thought they were giving you a hard time.

I go over there once every couple of years if I think they are wrong about something, and it is reported here

this week I went over and explained that RU did not have to pay Mathias to come here......that Uconn is beginning to feel the
result of not being in the Acc, or big 10..... the program is slowly going to lose its luster..... each year away from their title run is putting them closer to mediocrity.... add to that the recent dissent reported, and transfers out.

of course, one joker asked a few times, why are you here?....I had to tell him that their opinion of what Uconn is today might not be
what really is..... little tolerance..... I always try to be respectful, but it did not make a difference.

The way Steve Pikiell is working miracles I would not be surprised if Carey came to RU. I would think that Villanova and Syracuse might be the favorites but our coaches are just working so hard that anything is possible. jalen has visited RU twice so he must have some interest in RU and must believes in our coaches. SHU tried everything to get him to commit and many thought he was their's to lose. They even had an in with Tony El and were close with Jim Salmon and they didn't make the cut. I think I read that Jalen thought Kansas might be a little too far. Minnesota wanted him badly too but we are still in it.

There's a reason we are still on that list and I think that reason is Mathis. There's competition at every school for playing time and you just never know? Indiana had a host of 4 star guys and this last group didn't get it done for their coach. It's all about finding the right combination of players to gel together. I did not think we had a shot for Carey prior to Mathis but now I do.

@BKIn118 Has the staff mentioned any particular guys that have skyrocketed to the top of their list for 2018 to compliment all the gains we made last week? Understanding a lot of that they *may* want to keep under wraps, but they were pretty forthcoming with Montez being their #1 guy. Mucius stands out to me as potentially *that guy* alongside Carey - but interested in your thoughts. thanks!

Carey follows the tradition of the type guards Villanova and Syracuse usually recruit in size and scoring ability.

I don't know if we get him ...but I hear Carey is in play

Let it play out ...longer this goes ...better chance we have

Honestly...I don't bother the staff much with recruiting info for a couple of reasons:

One...They aren't supposed to discuss any prospective unsigned student athlete with boosters

Two, Three... Etc....See above

Even without that limitation though, I really don't have much interest in the game that is played with recruits. Kids being pushed and pulled in every direction by family, coaches and other influences. Info changes by the second...And I just don't have the heart to keep up with it all.

I prefer to focus on the current teams and the more impactful things going on around the program in house. It's really just more fun that way!

All very fair. Thanks for the insight and taking the time!
