Basketball Rutgers men's hoops preparing for pressure D from Illinois

Throw illinois’s record out the window, this will be as tough a game as any all season.

Let's not exaggerate. Looking at these responses makes me want to change my prediction.....

They will turn you over. That will be an issue. What aren't they good at....
1. They don't have a shot blocker. This could be a Mathis game.
2. Opponents shot 53.3% from 2 against them (probably see #1 as reason)
3. They are the fouliest (new word) team in the B1G
4. they play the highest tempo...I don't think that is bad for us

This could be a game where Harper Jr. gets back on track. I think finding bigs in the half court will work too (provided the guards can get it there)

Unless we learn a new scheme our big guys will be a liability in this one.
I actually think Myles could be an asset flashing to the middle of the floor as a huge target against ball pressure D, and he's a good passer for his size. You pass your way out of pressure, unless you've got just a sick ball handler. Even then, it's best to pass your way out of pressure D.

I watched a large part of the MSU-Illinois game and the guard pressure on PG Cassius Winston by Illinois was amazing...they drove him nuts. They have 3 quick guards-- 6'5, 6'2, 6'1.

I don't like this matchup.

I totally agree. However, in a pressure situation at the end of a game I haven't seen any of our big guys exhibit that ability. Once in awhile they will receive a pass in the backcourt, but don't react quick enough to move the ball. If you want them to help catch the inbound pass, maybe. But if you want to attack the defense because we have the advantage, no. I'm sure we'll find out.

Illinois uses man to man guard pressure all game long....not good for a team that lacks great ballhanders and struggles with turnovers.

Umm...I hate this notion that we struggle with turnovers ...averaging less than 12 per game in big ten play

So while any pressure team is something to watch ...I would not go crazy

If you want to be worried...I would be far more more concerned with the fact that we average causing less than 10 per game in big ten ...an alarming low number

I dont think we've gameplaned for it. Pike keeps saying Myles is our best passer here's where you would put it to use. Other games haven't really required it

I am with you, with everyone gushing over Illinois like they are a NCAA team, I too am almost willing to change my prediction. This is an improving tough team but beatable, they do not play great defense beyond the pressure. Its not like the 91 Arkansas team. We need to finish in the paint...Shaq Carter has been quiet of late and he needs to deliver. He was owned by Wesson and it frustrated him. Myles must finish.

what matchup is good....Penn State and Northwestern...come on, with that thinking why play the game.

Hope our bigs avoid putting the ball on the floor in the paint and underneath. Gotta keep the ball high and go straight up without hesitation.

So, you went from me pointing out a big matchup disadvantage to "why play the game".

No other team in the Big 10 has this kind of matchup advantage at such an important position over Rutgers.

We are talking about a team with quick guards that put intense ball pressure on guards going against a team that does not have very good ball handlers at guard.

That my friend.......is a clear Matchup Advantage.

No one is saying this game is unwinneable...but, extremely difficult matchup on the road, maybe at home also.

This is where Pike and company need to show their coaching skills with a good plan to beat the pressure. We do have a lot of height to pass over top of the pressure and EO can handle the ball a bit and pass. Myles is a huge target in the middle to break press. Get Harper and Mathis going towards the basket before the D is set

100% agree. May not be a traditional trapping press but you can still pass over the top, and they double a ton creating opportunities. Would be great to see a bunch of assists from Myles and Eugene today. If so, we win.

If they are too aggressive, we will be dunkin on their asses!!!

Need to open up the court with good spacing, sharpe cuts and back door them to death. Make them pay for high pressure.
