What team at Rutgers do you think will be the next to be a top 5 program nationally in whatever sport it is?

Women's basketball was always Top 25, Top 15 many years, but have since fallen back a little.

Wrestling is a Top 25 sport, as impossible as it is in the B1G to win every day.

There are a lot of other really good sports, and even more that need a ton of improvement.

What's that sport at RU who's going to constantly be a top 5 team for an extended period?

CVS can't coach forever so WBB will depend on who's the next coach.

Wrestling could be a Top 5 talent wise but not ranked because of the other B1G programs they face week after week.

If you look for a program that's pretty good more often than not it's Women's Soccer so that'd be my guess if anyone can do it.

I think WCBB has a pretty decent chance to move up some the next couple of years, but as knightfan7 says, the reality is that CVS will be moving on at some point, and then it depends on who gets hired. (My hope is that the fiscal situation will be strong enough by then to hire someone good, rather than taking a chance on a hot assistant, but we'll see.)

I would predict Women s Soccer. With he success of Carli Llyod (Spelling) and the popularity of futbal in the NY/NJ area can propel the team to the top fast.

Mens football.....just too much competition
Mens Wrestling....see above

Top 5? That's a stretch for anything besides WBB, wrestling or lacrosse. I don't see any other sport within the next decade getting close. Has football ever been ranked better than 9 within last 30 years?

Synchronized swimming or curling. [banana]

To be a bit serious, for now it looks like women's soccer.

We are in a hot bed of recruits for both football and basketball, so when we start winning and middle school players are dreaming about playing on the banks and the media start blowing us up, we can be a top ten/five program in both sports.

Sorry to say but I don't think I'll see it in my lifetime for any men's sports. Women's yes. Think women these days look for a good education first and not all the ritz and glitz that many of the men seek. Thus good women athletes will continue to choose Rutgers. For some reason I don't see Rutgers allocating the money necessary to compete with these sports factories.

What do you mean by "next"? Not sure we have the same definition.

I'd consider the time around the Cappie years as my definition as a consistent Top 5-ish (more likely Top 10) program. Granted, it wasn't like we were UConn, but from '98-'08 we went to 2 Final Fours, 2 Elite 8s, 2 Sweet 16s, and three other tourney appearances is pretty dominant for what I'm looking at for this thread.

+1

I wish it was the football team but I think the MBB has a better chance of top 25. He already has 2 4 stars recruits and you only need 3-4 good players to turn it around.

I'll predict football. Really. I expect football to really take off within the next five years.
As much time as I have devoted to Rutgers football and passion towards the team, I come with a sound opinion - no way in h*ll. The obstacles are way to high to make a "perennial powerhouse" move in 5yrs. Money, facilities, a name coach to challenge Meyer, Harbaugh, Dantonio, Riley, Franklin's bravado to raise money and get recruits. It will take 10yrs with the B1G to finally roll in.

Women's soccer.

List all NCAA tournament titles that CVS has won, please.
List all NCAA team titles that any RU coach has won. On the other hand, she's been to 4 Final Fours, 2 since coming to RU, and a slew of Sweet 16s and Elite 8s.

Those aren't titles.

I've never heard of an "elite coach" ewo has never won an NCAA title.

The thread asks about Top-5 rankings, not some definition of an elite coach. (In fact, the first time that phrase appeared in the thread was your post.) That said, I think any reasonable definition of elite would include someone who is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for her coaching.

Also, regardless of whether CVS is an "elite coach," WCBB has been the best program overall at RU over the last twenty (or, for that matter, ten) years, which is really the question this thread is about.

If you don't think she is elite, then Rutgers will never have an Elite coach and we will definitely never get a NCAA title in football or in my lifetime. The true hurts.

I do not think RU would come anywhere near paying anyone else the amount they have ponied up for CVS. Not only is WBB a financial loser, but they have clearly slipped badly in the last few years. The complaints about what CVS is making will not be repeated.
As to the original post, best guess is that it would be a minor womens sports that does not have the number of top programs to compete with.

Then again we don't want to win at anything. History repeats itself. I think Rutgers needs to think about at least being competitive in sports.

I agree that WSoccer has a shot, but despite some very good recruits the last few years, including at goalie and the Tiernan kid, they need to get more top level recruits to be a consistent top 20 team let alone top 5. Wrestling is one of our top programs (they have a great coach), but due to the conference we're in, they will have to exponentially improve their already strong recruiting for us to be a top 10 team.

I'm going to guess you haven't been paying attention the last couple of years - they won the WNIT in 2014 and got to the 2nd round of the NCAAs this year, where they ran into UConn. They're not back to where they were, but the team is much improved over the 2012 and 2013 editions.

You set the bar very high with the word "constantly". How many programs do that in any sport nationally these days?

Football - last year, final top 5 were Ohio State, Oregon, TCU, Alabama, Michigan State. Florida State was #6 after they got whipped in the playoff bowl.

2013: Florida State, Auburn, Michigan State, South Carolina, Missouri

2012: Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State*, Notre Dame, Georgia, Texas A&M

You could argue that Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan State, and Florida State are in the neighborhood of what you are asking for. None finished top 5 each of the last three seasons.

Men's hoops - Kentucky, Duke, WIsconsin (about to drop without Kaminsky, I bet)

Women's hoops - UConn, Notre Dame

Wrestling - Penn State, Iowa, ?

My answer: none. I do not expect to see us as a constant top 5 team in any sport.

Next RU program to finish in the top 5? I could see wrestling, as the B1G provides enough leverage that winning it (or coming close) would put you in the top 5.

None of the major sports. We do not invest at the levels to consistently compete at the highest level, and will never catch up. We are so far behind now, that even with Big Ten $$ we will not be able to ever spend what the premmial powers are spending. They not only bring in loads more revenue and donations, but have the majority of their input expenses endowed.

Unfortunately, the best we can hope for is the one off year or couple years here and there.

Could get there in wrestling, but probably not without significant investment in the program. Wrestling results are highly correlated with recruiting. Top recruits will not consistently choose Rutgers until we have more and better assistant and grad coaches and a better facility.

Do you consider any of these coaches elite:

Mark Richt
Jim Harbaugh
Chip Kelly
Chris Petersen
Brian Kelly
Bobby Petrino
Bill Snyder
Frank Beamer
Gary Patterson

Brad Stevens
Pete Carill
Lefty Driesell
Lou Carnesecca
Bob Huggins
Thad Matta
Jay Wright

Not one of those guys is "elite"?

WSoccer has the best chance. The GK Casey Murphy will only be a soph and she may be the best in the country (or close to it). They have a couple of strong classes coming in because the new HC is so connected to PDA - a top 5 club in the country. Top 5 is tough though - UVa, UNC, Duke, UCLA, Stanford, FSU etc are awesome every year and now Penn St will be a top program - amazing recruiting classes coming in. 2nd in B1G is a realistic goal, but ACC and Pac 12 is really, really good.
