"It's still probably even," Ash said of the race.
"I think right now — with where we're at in the spring and the way it has kind of gone back and forth with good days and bad days — it's a competition that's going to continue on into the summer and into training camp. It's not going to be something that's going to be settled here in the spring."
"Nobody has been playing consistently enough to say that they would be deserving of the right to say that they have been named the starting quarterback at Rutgers," Ash said.
"I really like their work ethic. I like where they are at in terms of a competition standpoint. They are learning the offense. They are running the offense probably a lot better than any of us would've thought that they would be at this point, but it's still not good enough. They know that."
"We want them to be consistent every single day, and we're not getting that," Ash said. "We have to evaluate why. Do we have to coach them different? Do we have to ask them to do something different? Do they have to do something different?
"As we move forward, if they stay fairly even, there are going to have to be some criteria that we determine that will help us decide who is going to be the starting quarterback in the fall."
"If that's not what we get to, if Chris, Hayden or Gio all do something differently or one does something better than the others and it's situational quarterbacking, then we'll take a look at that," Ash said.
"I prefer not to do that. I'd like to avoid that, and I think we will avoid that, but right now it's still an open competition, and we need the guys to continue to fight, scratch and claw to be as good as they can be. A lot of it is going to be who the other players trust, too."
