Matt Flanagan isn't your average college football transfer unhappy with his playing time or discovering that he is homesick.

The redshirt junior tight end exclusively told NJ Advance Media that he is leaving Rutgers to use his final year of eligibility as a master's degree candidate, most likely in a research-based science discipline. He is on track to graduate in the spring.

Wow
Was expecting big things from Flanagan next year.
Time for Jerome to step up.

Crap! Flanagan is a unheralded player, springing runs all over the place.
Happy with his contributions and love that he's one of our smart players doing work for our APR..represented us well. But putting that aside and judging solely from a football perspective.. ive seen corners blow by him/overpower him a few times this year and there were quite a few drops that could've been key first downs. We'll be happy with Washington next year.

Really though..smart guy. That degree aspiration is impressive.

He's gone from unknown walk on to a very serviceable player. Don't know if you should have expected "big things" to magically appear next year. It's time for the two TE's coming back to step up. I'd think there will also be 1 in this class.

Two Words: Jerome Washington

Congrats to him for taking school so seriously but if the staff was expecting big things he'd be coming back

Remember 2 years ago in the Detroit Bowl him not taking any shat from UNC players and knocking them around.

Haven't watched him close enough to agree or disagree with you, but I will take your word for it. My point to @vkj91 was that he is putting academics ahead of football. And if what you say is true, it is a win-win for him and the team. Congrats to him.
Very fair point..obviously on a team like ours you can still use the depth at every position

I think that's great as well and o hope he transfers to a top notch institution. 5th year transfers is one of the few things NCAA has gotten right.

I've seen him knock three guys down who were trying to tackle the RB. Case in point at the 1:22 mark in this video

listen i have no doubt you can find instances of him doing right, hes stepped up in the past. but nobody is gonna make a highlight reel of all the times he didnt get the block. fwiw i was kinda expecting a punishing block to back your point...that wasnt exactly a big hit. he caught the defender off balance there and thats what id hope our guys would be able to do. positioned himself well on that one play

Good luck to Mr. Flanagan.
Unfortunately I htink we need to go the JC route.. bring in some peeps who can contribute right away... use moderate success to recruit and sell the follow-on classes on the need to do it the "right way" without large numbers of JC xfers.

Pretty sure he was deciding between RU walking on and Ivy Leagues coming out of hs.
