Rutgers vs Purdue / Game Thread

McConnell had 5 of our 9 assists, 3 turnovers we definitely did not share the game.

Myles struggles today 0 points 2 rebounds. They doubled our post but we did not swing the ball fast enough to make them pay at all.

We have to work on this. Shaq Carter shows signs of being able to score in the post but he must learn to recognize the double team coming and either go faster or rotate the ball faster.

Chicken or egg argument. Gotta win to get the recruits, but need the recruits to win. How are we gonna break this nasty cycle we’re in?
Unfortunately, this never ending cycle can only be broken by recruiting
at the same level as the teams above us that qualify for the NCAA tourney.
Pike is a nice guy and well liked.
But he came from Stonybrook and is not known by the kids today.
Lack of name recognition combined with Rutgers notorious NCAA drought makes this a daunting task.
If you told Pike when he was hired that after year three his team would
still be in or near the B1G basement, he would have strongly disagreed.
We are no where close to the NIT yet alone the Big Dance.
I am rooting hard for Pike to succeed to break this streak.
However, to win we need players that the teams above us have.
As many of us have said for years, a coach with a proven winning resume may be our only answer.
In two years we get our full share of the pot.
If then we are in the same position, the answer will be evident.

18 turnovers

gotta laugh at the announcers..they just ran into a buzzsaw

Rutgers established 1991 been running into buzzsaws for 28 years
Ha..1 good year. Go back to 1983 and make it 35 to 36 years. So that's 1 out of 36 or 37 years.

Worst basketball program in America since the 76 to 83 golden years. My time. This sucks so bad.

Agree with a lot of what you said, but honestly if Pike can't do it, who honet can? He is a head coach who has taken teams to NCAA tournaments and has similar resume to big ten coaches who get hired. If we are looking at doom and gloom in 4 years why not just shut it down.

We are so easy to defend. No one can beat anyone off the dribble. As soon as it goes to the post, double team forcing the outside shot that no one can hit. Wash rinse repeat.
Very true, but our guys don't react quick enough when receiving the entry pass because they have no ability to make a move that requires a shot adjustment. We manage to foul when it's 1 on 2.

He took a mid major team to the tourney.
If you want to argue we don't belong in the B1G that's another discussion.
If Pike can't recruit or surround himself with coaches that can then we won't get over the hump.
I will leave it to others to throw out potential names.

Guess the new up tempo offense isn’t the answer with this team
The only up tempo is putting the shots up faster. Terrible bringing the ball up court is slow and no long passes because nobody can get to the basket. Doorson should be able to help up high, but nobody comes out to guard him because they know he won't shoot.

Pike! I question his ability to make adjustments, ability to assess talent, question if he's trying to win. . Why the Hell does he continue to play Issa? Why? Why? Why? Please somebody help me understand. Kiss as well? PLAY CALEB, he makes the team better..simple KISSA doesn't.. CM does it all... He's burning Geo out and making him look bad.. Give the poor guy a break. Why would he play Issa/Kiss in front of CM? CM, GB, MM, RH SC/MJ! No brainer..I'm done.. Somebody please help me...SMDH!

We've been awful because there has been zero investment in the program for 30 years. After they built the RAC there has been nothing. We have to be the last power 6 team to get a practice facility. The RAC is badly in need of renovations. When you neglect a program for so long its no wonder the fan support is so low and the program is in shambles.

I actually expect us to win on Friday...even after this. NW has played some good games including a 2 point loss to Michigan but that is a very winnable game. They are not that good and I think we match up very well with them.

Northwestern is winnable because they do not have the ability of a Purdue to take over a game and beat down the opponent. I too am actually expecting a win on Friday night. RU is home and we actually may have more athleticism.

Purdue is not that much better than Rutgers. Geo must work on stable drives. As fot Kiss and Thiam, I think Rutgers is far better off playing their freshman.

Purdue is much better than Rutgers. You are crazy, but yes we should be playing the freshmen.

Best of Luck,
Groz

88 did not suck... but we did disappoint in the tourney.. as we did in 91

They are not 45 points better... this game was a travesty.. I do think Geo is tired.. too many minutes.. too much weight on his shoulders..

my time was 88-93...we had two NCAAs and two NITS...if I came around later or earlier I might not have the passion I have for the program...never did I expect this futility after experiencing such great RAC crowds and student sections during my time as a student.

guess after Littlepaige I blanked out for a few years. but vs. my time OTB, these results weren't close. (but I did like that 91-92 team)

'88-89 18-13 ranked 109
'89-90 18-17 ranked 150
'90-91 15-10 ranked 64 (lost by 15 rd 1)
'91-92 16-15 ranked 158.

go look at '77-83 (won't even include '76 the year prior to my arrival)

In the last two games Rutgers has allowed the opponent to score 88 and 89 points and the final scores could have been close to 100 points.

...and some people want us to fastbreak...smh....rarely a good idea if you are always less talented. A weak team needs to shorten the game and limit possessions, and besides, we shoot layups almost no better than we shoot in our half-court offense. In fact, if every game ended after 30 seconds, we might have a .500 record.

We need to get back to controlling tempo and playing tough half-court D like we did in the Miami game to marginalize our inept offense and to have any chance.
