Rutgers Wrestling vs Lehigh / Updates and Results Thread

None of this explains how PSU is able to load up on Elite Wrestlers. Someone even suggested that you don't receive a scholarship at PSU until you become an All-American. Is that even possible? I can't imagine that this actually occurs at PSU.

That was me, and that is not the case with every kid, but there have been recruits that have said that in the paper when they said they were going there. And what do you mean is that even possible? You do realize that scholarships are year to year, and the money will change each year. And plenty of wrestlers go to PSU, Iowa etc without getting any money.

If what you're saying is correct, then it puts more emphasis on having an Elite Coach. Because you need someone with enough credibility that kids will literally pay their own way just to have access to this person. Not only risking injury, but also turning down full rides to other schools.

Which means that it doesn't matter what Goodale is able to accomplish. It will always come back to this notion of being an elite coach. Which would explain the success of Brands, Smith and Cael. Wow, This makes a ton of sense now.

Bingo!!! However, Goodale has Pritzlaff(who is elite) and if you listen to the incoming recruits they mention Donnie. Goodale has done a tremendous job already, and I think they are ready to be a consistent top 10 team. That it is why it is so important to continue to improve like RU has and hopefully break thru with multiple All americans. Recruits see that they can AA at RU and more and more blue chippers start to come.

Well if this is correct, then what the heck is Rutgers paying Goodale for. He must be an Alumni Coach like EJ?

I think you are underestimating the job Coach Goodale has done with the program. It was about to get chopped when he took over. I believe he only had 4 schollys when he took over. He has the SKWC, RU is a Regional Training Center, fundraising is going gangbusters and attendance finished 6th(pretty sure) in the country last season and will be right around there this season.

Ok, so according to this logic we should still be paying Schiano because the program was a complete shambles before he took over.

I expect Goodale to be around as long as he likes.
Hopefully RU rewards him with a position (eventually) outside of the wrestling room.
Scott has been a good ambassador for RU and would be a nice fit for a position within the athletic department.
If RU can make that happen before Donny P gets a head coach offer, RU Wrestling could be set for a long time.

If you really think RU can keep up with the Cael Sanderson's of the world, you are crazy.
How many undefeated College wrestlers are there? World Champions?
Cael has 4 of the last 5 titles and with the lineup he has, PSU should be favored for the next 4.

Hard to argue with the success of a coach who has had arguably the best season in RU wrestling history

(I have heard Jordan Burroughs name, but how would he be as a coach? Sometimes the best players don't make the best coaches.)

And
2016 Scott Goodale is a lot better coach than 2009 Scott Goodale.

Kudos. I believe this response is reasonable, and well articulated. Burroughs would make a ton of sense. A hire like that, and you go from 2500 at the RAC to 5K.

there are other ways around the 9.9 scholarships. some schools hire the parents into the universities, kid gets free tuition but does not count against the scholarship totals. I believe I read that Penn state did this with the Alton twins.

head coach is of course important in selecting a program, but recruits also consider the coaches at their weight. need AA and nat'l champs for low. mid and heavy weights. Also need a kick ass club team with post grads competing at the national level. look at penn state, they have molinaro, casey cunningham, and the sandersons in the room, and then nittany lion wrestling club which has the likes of David Taylor and olympic champ Jake Varner.

the club success comes from donations. More money = more quality resident wrestlers.

kids want to go to Penn State because they are trying to not only be successful in college, but want a career in wrestling after graduation. World champs, olympic champs, div I college coaches etc... Im sure most of them have some tuition assistance.
