Rutgers Wrestling vs Purdue / Updates and Results Thread

AP/Ashnault/Lewis Locks

Smith at 95%
Gravina at 90%
Giraldo at 85% .... Needs to pick it up.... weight cut may be too much for him
Bak at 80%
McCabe at 50%
Hrymack at 50%
DIppery at 40%

Heavyweight will be tough if Coon doesn't get enough matches....
Synder and Coon will steal 2 bids and Smith may need a WC....

I would Hope for 6 or 7 bids
Hrymack and McCabe i believe are in top 33 so they can get a qualifier with a solid B10

I think we qualify 8 or 9. I think everyone is in top 33 except hrymack. Dippery is like in the 30s.

McCabe needs to wake up or else he will be an early exit in the B1G tourney. That was a terrible loss today. Hrymack simply got caught. It has happened to all of us.

I think Gravina wrestling at 133 is catching up to him.

You mean Giraldo.Yeah,Giraldo is way too big too wrestle at that weight, but he can't switch now.It would be ideal too see McCabe 125,Del 133,Giraldo 141,Ashnault 149.Theobold 157( Lewis redshirt)

Just watched the match on dvr. Some very good performances and some concerning. Thought perrotti was the match of the day. Gave up two quick points but then came back with vengeance. Dippery was probably the biggest positive surprise. Solid performances from ash, Lewis, bak and smith. Thought pafumi battled hard.

Now for the not so good. Another outing where giraldo did next to nothing offensively. I did not see the Indiana match but after seeing Michigan there is reason for concern if he is not injured. Hayden and McCabe lost to guys with losing records and Hayden getting pinned quickly against a strong Michigan opponent is understandable but today is harder to comprehend. McCabe seemed to struggle with the opponents length. Goodale did not seem pleased. I was somewhat expecting Patrick again today since the match was already decided so I assume an injury is the issue here.

Nice weekend to end the conference schedule. Some guys would seem to stil have work to do to punch their ticket to the ncaas.

JB..gettin old sucks...I know,I know..lol.It's nice that these kids give us something to cheer about, outside of our own families.I got tired for years defending my team. Now,I'm soaking up every minute.
New to the college wrestling scene, can one of you guys explain how a guy qualifies for the NCAA tourney? Does he have to be top 4 or 8 in the big ten tourney or top ranked nationally at his weight?

It would be nice to see 8 guys make it at least to give RU a shot at a top 10 finish.

What's the chances they nix the Drexel match now that rhey have the Duals? Out of conference means nothing.

Giraldo is cutting extreme weight for his frame this entire season in order to wrestle at 133, and it has been showing in recent matches, with last minute losses due to the resulting physical issues.

He never got off the bus for that match not sure what was going on there.

My guess is that with 1000 season tickets sold no way they cancel the match. I do think you will see a few back-ups in the match.

125: J. Patrick
133: A Giraldo
141: Nick O.
149: Tyson Dippery
157: Richie Lewis
165: A Perroti
174: Phil Bak
184: A. Pafumi
197: H Hrymack
285: Billy Smith

Hopefully that lineup would be good enough to beat Drexel (not sure how good drexel is)
Maybe even rest RL at 157
Drexel Match means nothing, let the wrestlers get another day of rest if needed.

I might sound out of line here, but I just think Giraldo won't stay with wrestling for much longer.Maybe it is the weight cut,we'll see.Regardless,he looks very disinterested out there.I don't know this young man, maybe it's his personality, but alot of kids are cutting weight and they go out there and put on a show.I've been around wrestling along time, and have coached plenty of kids. You can tell when the kid is either burnt out or just doesn't want it anymore.I'm hoping for his sake,he can prove me wrong, because he has all the tools and talent too High AA or even win it all.

the ncaa announces a number of spots for each conference at each weight. They calculate this number based on how each teams' starters are doing. To qualify a wrestler has to have the requisite number of matches and be in the top 33 in the RPI. There are weights for the BIG where every wrestler will qualify. in those where there are less bids than wrestlers, your place at the BIG tournament determines if you go.

unfortunately at heavyweight 2 of the best 2 wrestlers in the country (Coon and Snyder) may/will not have the number of matches to qualify for a bid. They are both likely to be in the finals of the big, and therefore they will essentially "steal" a bid from 2 other wrestlers. e.g if Billy places 5th and there are only 4 bids, he would not get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

However, the NCAA does not give out all the slots through the conferences, and will award a certain number of wild cards. These are essentially given to the next most deserving candidates. some conferences did/do not have conference tourneys, or not enough teams in their conference and can only qualify by WC. 2 years ago Oklahoma state had to qualify all their wrestlers in this manner. If billy got screwed by coon and snyder taking pseudo-olympic redshirt years, he would most likely get a wild card anyway.

Most appreciative otter!

Nice win over a decent squad...anxious to see who Rutgers hosts in next weeks National Dual championship, would love to see them face local school Lehigh as a warm up for the Big Ten Championships...

How many wrestlers do you guys think qualify for nationals?
Turns out RU is getting the matchup I was hoping for...think this will be a nice test for the squad before Big Tens

Same here I can't imagine less than 8 qualifying. We had 8 qualify in 2011.

BTW - what a GREAT way to finish off the B1G season! Go to Indiana and sweep IU and PU on the road after dropping 2 tough ones, a week earlier, at home. LOVE IT!

Gravina will make it I think even if he doesn't earn one of the spots. I think we send 7. McCabe Dippery and Haden just don't have the big wins that's are needed to get a wild card selection.

Dippery and Hrymack need to steal a round or 2 in the BIGs.
The rest should be ok if they wrestle to seed in the BIGs.
the big will get a lot of 125 lbs, McCabe will be ok.
ap/ash/lewis/smith are locks regardless.

should get 8 in, potential for more with a good BIG tourney.
I'd figure 9.
