Rutgers Wrestling vs Wisconsin / Updates and Results Thread

Gravina and Hrymack with wins
15-12 Wisconsin

Billy smith gets 1st takedown in match at heavyweight

That was a terrible performance by Rutgers. They were sleepwalking the whole match. Where's their sense of urgency? I'm so disappointed!

The wrestling team like other Rutgers teams is facing the hard reality of competing in the B1G where the tradition and recruiting advantages don't favor Rutgers right now.It will take time and financial backing to catch up.

Ummmmm. No we got out wrestled by an inferior team...had nothing to do with money... losing 3 3rd period leads late had nothing to do with tradition...

Now let's not overreact here.. This is B1G wrestling. ..gotta bring it every single match!!! Against every opponent, or else this happens. .

Just got home. Just a lackluster effort by the team. I don't remember any near falls, actually maybe only 1 RU wrestler had a 2 count for 2 points, Maybe. Not one RU guy had a major, TF, and nobody close to a pin. Lots of dancing around on our feet, and most (not all) of the RU wrestlers seemed to be out conditioned in the 3rd period.

While the Wisconsin coach was all over the mat getting on the officials and contesting calls, and encouraging his guys, our HC was a mummy by comparison.

Our star won by 4 points over an unranked kid, at 133 our ranked kid gets pinned , and our AA at 165 got ridden like American Pharoah and was totally whipped.

Michigan is going to win by 15-20.

It's just so frustrating. I can't believe we wrestled like this at home. Minn loss was bad but at least maybe they were jet lagged or something. How Giraldo Dippery and Bak could sleep tonight is beyond me. Lewis was lucky and I'm not sure why Ashnault takes Nuetral to start 3rd and takes a shot with 5 sec to go in the match. Where is the drive to finish matches from these guys. Bakackus must want to just scream. How many matches has he lost by a point. He has no luck finishing matches at all. What a total letdown. Michigan is going to be real ugly.

Everything that could go wrong did tonight and that cost us the match. Wisky wrestled every bout smarter than us. Most of them did not shoot at all tonight and we made mistakes in the 3rd to lose bouts. Tough loss on our home court.

My views on tonight:

133 Giraldo; The kid has a conditioning problem in the last period. He needs too fix that.Yes,Taylor is a great wrestler, but there was no need for AG too just get tossed like that.He better wake up,because the Big 10 Tournament certainly will do that.

141 Ashnault:Has hit a ceiling in a bad way. He's becoming so predictable with his style, that opposing coaches are on too it and limiting his offense. In the beginning of the year I was thinking high AA.With the way he wrestled tonight, and last week, round of 12 if he is lucky.

149 Dippery: The kid has heart and tries his best.TYSON!!..ya need too get stronger my man. He's getting out muscled and looks like he's struggling in the tie ups.

157 Lewis: Not his best match, but somehow, someway,Richie finds a way too win.

165 Perrotti: Isacc Jordan is a dominant, better wrestler. He's a top 3 guy all day long, where Perrotti is round of 12 to low AA,That's what separates these two.Perrotti could have wrestled tougher. Was too tenative.

174 Backucas: The kid needs too man up..seriously.He's gotta stop blowing these late match leads. If Phil gets an NCAA wild card this year I'll eat crow.

184 Gravina: Not much too say, other than Goodale should bottle what this kids got and give it too the rest of the team.,He's becoming one of our "go too "guys.

197 Hyrmack: Wrestled tough.Hayden is hit of miss and tonight he wrestled hard for the team.Did what he suppose too.

HWT Smith: Billy wrestled a cautious match and prevailed.Definitely not his best performance, but we'll take the "W".

125 McCabe: The stress definitely got too him.He looked defeated out there and did not wrestle with sense of urgency.I totally understand that, and hopefully he'll learn from this and bring his A game for Michigan.

A tough night for a group of guys that have given us a lot of pride and excitement. Nebraska and Princeton have been highlights. Minnesota and Wisconsin were downers. The Big Ten is one tough grind. Sunday will be very difficult against a more talented Michigan team. Gotta believe that there is a lot of fight left in our guys. Not happy about tonight. Proud of where we have come from. Still believe the future is bright.

it's a bummer. wisconsin is a good team, but our guys needed to show more fight than that we saw tonight. ashnault is too cautious in his match against an unranked kid. bak and dip both had to pull their match out. giraldo was great until the last 30secs... on to michigan.

Awful match.. We wrestled more aggressive and they stole key wins at the end.. It was tough to watch.. I wanted to punt their midget coach Barry Davis.. Yeah I know he was a national champ... Annoying midget though...

I just think Goodale simply doesn't know how to prepare the team to compete for an entire season. I think they peak way to early in either late December or early January. They tend to struggle late in the season and then disappear come tournament time.

Matches are close ... In the right direction ... Stinks if they lose to UM .. If so, another losing conference record

Here is what my buddy wrote about the Wisc coach on another site :

'The Wisconsin coach was doing everything in his power to intimidate the referees . He should have been thrown out.

Goodale was keeping his cool, but at one point all RU coaches were screaming at the Wisconsin jerkoff. I thought one of our coaches was gonna go after him. Had to be restrained.

I think the Wisconsin coach was related to The Grand Wizard of the old WWF. What a constant pest, I thought he was gonna jump in the ring. He was arguing with RU fans near him. Out of control."

LOL

This same friend said to me 'hey, Gravina looks like a young Luca Brasi ! (Godfather movie), he looked him up, and turns out Luca Brasi is Lenny Montana, a Pro Wrestler in his younger years ! :

We will learn a lot about the make up of this team on Sunday. I expect a strong effort.

I was disappointed with the results of the match.
I think RU is waking up to the reality of competing in the B10 day in and day out.
Meat Grinder is a good word for the conference.

I feel the team is light years ahead of where they were 5 to 10 years ago.
Hopefully, each match (win or lose) gets the wrestlers ready for the B10 and NCAA.
Realistically, RU is a top 15 NCAA tournament team.
Keep grinding and getting All Americans EVERY year and good things will happen.
The recruiting class looks very solid and depth in the wrestling room seems to be improving.
I am optimistic about the process (even thou I am slightly pessimistic with results the last few matches).

Do you think the team wrestles too many Duals?
RU seems to wrestle more of these than other B10 teams.
Is that because the depth in our wrestling room is not as deep as other B10 teams?

I don't know the exact reason RU wrestles so many duals, but maybe it's financial, as Duals , especially Big10 duals generate a lot of ticket sales and fan support. Going to out of town tourney's do not , but I am guessing here.

We were too tentative & not aggressive enough, especially on our feet. Giraldo had the upset & worst case should've lost a decision at the end by giving up a TD, but he should not have gotten stuck. He seems too gassed late in matches. Ashnault should've majored. Bak should've won. Perrotti, while I expected a close loss, should've shot more.

Pritzlaff doesn't know how to either? I'm not sure preparation is the issue but I'm at a loss for answers as to why much of the team is so tentative & not aggressive enough on its feet. We almost seem content being up 2-0 or 2-1 after 1st period or any period we're on our feet when we could be up 4-1 or even 6-2.

Pritzlaff is just an assistant. In the end it falls on Goodale. The patern started way before Pritzlaff even arrived. It happened in the EIWA days. They start out like gang buster in early duals including a big upset or two. They climb the ranks then the second half of the season there disappointing performance then finishing very low at the NCAAs

You hit the nail on the head. You have to score points and increase your advantage. We did not and lost the close ones.

Probably the best quote ever written about this program.Summed it up in a few short sentences.

Guys certainly didn't look unprepared out there... I knew coming in there were going to be a lot of tight matches.. Sometimes you just have to give credit to the opponent...

I think it was just a bad night and we were probably over confident going in.

Gonna come prepared every night in the big ten and last night was a perfect example. I suspect we will bounce bak ok although we will likely lose on Sunday. We still look much better than a few years ago in my opinion.

I hate the peaking nonsense. you can never tell when a coach has his team peaking too early until after the NCAAs. its a useless description that no one can identify until after the results are in. I guess Cael usually has his team peak properly until last year, when he apparently forgot how to properly peak his team. so stupid.

haven't watched the match yet but sounds like Wisconsin wrestled better matches. it happens.

Well one down this weekend one to go. Very disappointed in the way we wrestled, very tentative. There was no fire. They wrestle like this Sunday and they're going to get curb stomped. I hope not I have 6 1st timers going with our season ticket group. I may have over estimated how good I thought we were after these last two matches. I seriously thought we had three potential AA's now I think we'll be lucky to get one a low placed one. Very disappointed this team definitely didn't bounce back from that Minn. loss in fact may have wrestled worse in this match. We desperately need to reverse this trend tomorrow night.

We bounced back from Minny by belting Maryland and a good Princeton team so I don't buy that. We stunk last night. Having a 9 point swing in the opening bout set the tone for the night. If AG holds on those last 10 seconds and wins the place goes nuts. Now we are down 6-0 instead of up 3. If McCabe gets that first takedown different story. We did not have fire or try offensively to score more points but got defensive. Like in football or basketball when you go prevent defense you usually lose and we did.

if there was one thing that bothered me last night was situational wrestling... at least 3 times in 3rd period of matches, we were on top and gave up reversals... that cant happen like that...
