Saverese digs in(update)1/7/19 Bilas responds

The official response. They are standing by their decisions and remain oblivious to anything approaching perspective or proportionality.

I wonder if the Davenport family knew the amount of the check before it was received. If the enveloped was addressed to Maori, she might have deposited it on her own. She was allowed to receive $250--the mother might have known that and assumed that was the amount of the check. The official statement clearly puts the onus on the adults involved that do not include the current board.

Savarese's explanation makes it clear that he thinks what he's doing is punishing the team for allowing the violation, without any consideration for the impact on Maori Davenport. I get that you want to make sure there's no incentive for schools to make believe they don't know the rules, but the facts here are so far from that sort of thing that it makes me wonder if he's got some vendetta against the school or the coach.

From anything I have read, no, there was no particular reason that her mother would have known this rule. The check was from USA Basketball - essentially the governing body for, well, USA basketball. Not a recruiter, not a college, not a booster, not even the NCAA or WNBA. USA Basketball, which has fully admitted they were at fault - clerical error is the description. Some high school players can receive the stipend and some can't, depending on their state rules. NCAA athletes (and obviously, pro athletes) can receive the stipend with no issues.

I would assume that they would have looked askance at a check from anybody else, regardless of amount. But this rule applies to so few athletes that I can't imagine it would have been impressed on the Davenport family. I'm sure some folks within her circle (coach?) did know it, and they probably assumed that USA basketball would not make a mistake. It reminds me, in a much more serious way, of when Cappie? Tasha? one of them played a game in a non-sanctioned league and had to sit out 2 games.

It occurs to me that someone should ask Nick Saban about this (after tonight).

If you read the letter, I can’t believe how he went after her MOTHER now !! How classless and unprofessional!! This guy (and the writer, David Houffman or something) is clearly a total JERK ! I wonder if she has a brother, he should go find this guy and let him know how he feels about the way this guy has treated the women in his family to the national media !!
