This coming weekend, I would not rule out the staff starting Johnathan Lewis just yet. Both Ash and Kill said today a decision has not been made. The starter should become a little clearer by midweek, but there are a lot of reasons why the staff should start Lewis.

The game does not have bowl implications and Michigan State has superior talent, meaning that the formula that won games against Illinois, Maryland and Purdue is not going to work against the Spartans. So, for Rutgers to have any chance, it will need to make plays in the passing game. That has not happened in the last six games and perhaps Lewis can provide a spark to help boost what has been a dismal offense. The experience will also be beneficial heading into next season.

It made sense as to why Rutgers went with Rescigno in their three wins as it minimized mistakes. The offense played safe football, which gave the defense a chance to carry the team. Some decent games on the ground were able to pace the offense.

Even if Rsecigno does wind up the starter next season, it makes sense to see what Lewis can do through four quarters. Very few people are banking on a Rutgers upset against Michigan State so this is a chance to grow some players for the future. My take is give the freshmen reps. Lewis’ redshirt has been burned, so why not give him a game? The decision may not seem too leads to win this weekend, although it could be very significant moving forward. This experience could end up being a valuable learning experience for Lewis. It also lets the staff see what it has in Lewis instead of just ‘Tylin Oden’ style reps over the course of a season.

Here is the latest from Ash and Kill on the QB situation.
