It’s probably just saving us some time and exposing this team earlier, but I like many others couldn’t help but feeling this season would almost certainly be in a much more salvageable position by replacing Princeton and KSU with more orthodox fixtures.

So, I checked each of the KenPom Top 75 teams to see if/what any remotely comparable scheduling moves other P4 teams have:

— Alabama at ND
— Miss. St with a funky semi-home in Tupelo against a good (Q2) McNeese team
— Michigan St. against Oakland in Detroit
— UNC at Hawaii (they went on to play in Maui)
— Penn St. vs Drexel in Philly
— BYU vs Wyoming in SLC
— Arkansas vs C. Arkansas in Little Rock
— Villanova Big 5 Games
— Arizona State vs. Santa Clara in Vegas
— Florida State semi-away against Rice
— Kansas St. vs. Drake in KC

That’s it, and we had two of those games on our schedule. A really frustrating miscalculation imo.

yup....again both of those games have zero upside

peeps can say get tougher all you want but its about building a resume...had Pierces shot rimmed out and RU won, it still wouldnt change my thinking about where we are right now but it would count as a W which is all they care about for the resume...and I still would be saying dont play this game because Q3 games do nothing to help really. Could have scheduled a Big East schools this year and get a Q2 or a Q1 and the team probably plays the game the same way down to the wire.

I don't pay attention to future schedules as much as most around here. But it's certainly not lost on me that the two games that most were like "WTF?!??!" going into the season are the two that are massive black eyes for us right now.

I'm just not sure it's gonna matter because our team let's up an insane amount of easy buckets and gets so few ourselves. Rebounding not much different. We get boxed out and give up easy defensive boards all the time and have to fight like hell to secure a defensive rebound on our end.

also its the kind of games that Pike schedules every year

Temple..Mohegan Sun..why
St Bonaventure...Toronto..why
Princeton...Trenton...why
at Kennesaw State
Princeton..Pru Center..why
at De Paul part of big east challenge..yeah another no show against a moribund program

so yeah its two fold...bad schedule making and the program just not on the level that some think it is. Other programs can sustain these losses because they schedule alot of other tougher games and their high point is not being a bubble team which it has been under Pike

It’s bizarrely aggravating how we’re such consistent outliers we are on the scheduling front. No MTEs before this year, and for what? To play St. Bonaventure in Canada? Temple in Connectivegas?

No other P4 program schedules like this. We’re not Villanova playing the Big 5, we didn’t play Princeton for a decade and have no obligation to play them now, particularly not annually at a neutral site.

likely forced by a few alums like RU72 and guys like Carino pressuring Pike and the friggin Gazelle Group who has now influenced 2 games for RU vs Princeton

RU needs to hire someone to work on scheduling....this year the sos non conference around 130 isnt bad overall BUT it left RU in a scenario by playing in Vegas they had to beat either Alabama or Houston (intially)/Texas A&M or there would be ZERO non conference wins of note...who schedules like that.

IMO they shouldnt have played Vegas with this bunch so young and Pike not doing too hot with the portal, I dont give a shit about the $$$, that went to the players...how come no one is talking about their best 3 games were all in Vegas and their performance there could have made them more money..a big incentive vs a win over Princeton and make no mistake, Ace/Dylan are concentrated on the nba not ncaa tourney.

Pike lying about trying to get a game with Cuse, sorry I dont believe it..did the Gazelle Group sponsor the Maryland/Cuse game too at the Barclays?

RU bending over and giving up a home game against Michigan State YET AGAIN..and the media pumps up the story that Pike doesnt mind and wants to showcase the program at MSG on CBS. I mean if we are worried about the latter than this program is small time.

Pike for years has avoided scheduling tough teams for some nonsense reason like home for the holidays..what the **** this isnt sunday school but every year makes some horrific scheduling blunder where the opponent gives no upside, he might as well just schedule another Q4 at home to get the win

Anyone fixated or focused on scheduling and calling these games risks are

1. Focused on the wrong thing by a mile
2. So small time in their thinking (our schedule is still small time )

I agree the schedule is small time

And focusing on the schedule at any level and claiming it’s stupid or wrong to schedule teams we should be beating by 15 is , yes, focusing on the wrong thing.

if you are bringing in 2 nba stars there are two ways of scheduling

scheduling a whole bunch of tough games where you load it up because you want to motivate and challenge them and let them know what it takes...that might leave them 6-5 OOC

or

you schedule a total cream puff schedule to get them at worst 10-1 heading into Big 10 team

RU scheduled in a way that leaves them 7-4 or even 6-5 OOC without doing the first scenario

well yes if RU won today, wouldnt really change my feeling on where we are right now,, we would have dozens of threads saying how dare you criticize...lets just enjoy the win, it was incredible.

Real programs pay/consult people to help design their schedules because they understand it’s important. Every aspect of this schedule was thoughtless and not oriented around optimizing this team’s chances at dancing

you mean the same peeps that moved a rutgers game to msg thinking it was neutral site only to be found out the ncaa considered it a home game..you mean they wouldnt give up the same EXACT HOME GAME when giving the chance...you dont think they are qualified..haha

somehow Kevin Willard finds his way into ny/nj to play Syracuse and Villanova and Rutgers is playing Princeton in Newark and at Kennesaw State the same days

No more neutral court games against Princeton.

If Princeton does not like it, don't schedule them.

If you think you’re better than you are and that you’ve “arrived” and schedule without thought you’re just playing checkers.

If you’re still trying to establish your program because you didn’t capitalize on the success of 4-5 years ago, but now are lucky enough to have two lottery picks, it’s time to play chess and set the schedule ONLY in your favor. It’s not running scared it’s being smart.
