According to this DailyMail article...... Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner and his reps negotiated him winning the ESPY's award last night when he was negotiating for the big Diane Sawyer interview on ABC. (KEY POINT: You have to know that ABC owns ESPN which are both owned by Disney which are both owned by Viacom I believe. I am 90% positive about the Viacom part.)

So basically all of the channels were fighting for the big interview where Bruce was going to come out as Caitlyn. And basically his reps made a deal with ABC that they would give the interview to ABC and do it with Diane Sawyer IF they then promised that he would win the ESPY's big award.

Yawn - this might be the first thing I've read about the Jenner thing and hopefully will be the last. Just not interested.

Does ESPN make any claim that the ESPY's are voted on by somebody?
I think it's whoever they want to pick and they make no claims otherwise.

If I make up my own awards, I get to pick the winners.

I totally agree with you. I don't pay a single bit of attention to the whole Jenner thing because that is exactly what they want. I also did not watch the ESPY's because there are SO MANY MORE THINGS to do with my day than spend watch the ESPY's.

But the point of me posting this was just to point out the shady stuff that goes on in the world. And especially television which I find hard to believe that I ever let myself watch multiple hours of television a day FOR YEARS! What a total WASTE I was!

lol what a terrible comment... why do people make posts like this? Of course it was a surprise to some people, if not many people.

If you happened to put 2 and 2 together ahead of time then congratulations... next time please share with the forum so we can all be aware as well.

Viacom doesn't have any stake in abc or ESPN. Hate to break it to you, but that's how a lot of these award shows work. emmys and oscars are still about the winners, but these other b and c list events are just about who they can get to show up.

You are correct about the Viacom part at least. Disney is actually the top of that media food chain.

As for the other parts of you post, I am happy that you are aware that a lot of these award shows are fixed/ have shady negotiations going on in the background.

Of course, not everybody is aware of this so that is why I brought it up in the forum.

And trust me you aren't "breaking" anything to me. I have stopped watching TV a long time ago. pretty much the only thing I will actually sit down for it Rutgers football and basketball games.

Wow! Such a shocking discovery. And the ESPYs were on ABC for the first time. Shocking I say...just shocking.

Geeze. Some people need to get out more!

Posters like this bring NOTHING to the forum haha.

As usual WhiteBus, thank you for such insightful words!

In the future if you are able to connect the dots about things like this ahead of time then please feel free to post on the forum so that everybody can be enlightened as well.

This is just a silly argument . Why would Whitebus feel the need to post something that he feels is obvious and apparent to most people. Like announcing to the board that the sky is blue

Really??? You think this is a legit award show?? It is TV content for ABC/ESPN. Talk about delusional. They saw the ratings for the first CJ interview and paid him/her to come back. If you think that CJ was more worthy of that award over Lauren Hill and many others you are completely nuts. A hero? Please. Lauren Hill played basketball with cancer that killed her soon after. Bruce Jenner change is clothes. And is making millions off it.
The ESPYs started out with great intentions. Now it's simply about driving ratings.

Couldn't agree more. The guy does this a lot though where he inserts himself into threads with nothing to add either way to the discussion and then just ends up taking the thread in a totally different tangent with lots of straw man arguments thrown in there. And it doesn't even make sense because this isn't supposed to be a debate, but rather an open discussion where we all gain more knowledge about Rutgers football and the occasional other topics outside of Rutgers football.

It amazes me of the defenders of ESPN/ABC on this.

My "community" (LGBTYUENDJRKS...) is the most vitriolic, recalcitrant and least tolerant (as whole) of the "margin"/ minority communities...

Before I'm accused of internalized self-loathing, just take it from me...it is one scary, bitter and largely angry bunch. Deviate one micron from the prescribed talking points and the viciousness that follows can be epic!

I thankful for much of the recent advancements in equality, but yikes...

Yes I couldn't agree more. It is totally just content for television.

AND BY CREATING THIS THREAD AND POSTING THIS ARTICLE, IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO SHOW THE INNER WORKINGS OF HOW TV/MEDIA WORKS! And this would hopefully then open OTHER peoples eyes to now be able to see how easily manipulated and shady the entire industry is and why more and more people are doing away with television all together because of this fact.

But talk about delusional WhiteBus..... just because you claim that you have already come to this understanding about the ESPY's and TV and Media as a whole DOES NOT MEAN EVERYBODY has.

HAHA and P.S Part of your statement above shows how much you don't even understand what is going on. You state that "They saw the ratings for the first CJ interview and paid him/her to come back." WRONG! The whole point of the article is that THE DEAL HAD ALREADY BEEN MADE DURING THE DIANE SAWYER NEGOTIATIONS that Jenner would be able to come on the ESPY's and he would win that award. So when you say that ESPN saw the rating from the CJ interview and then decided to get him on the ESPY's... THAT IS SHOWING YOU COMPLETELY MISSED THE WHOLE POINT THAT YOU SAY YOU UNDERSTAND.

It amazes me of the defenders of ESPN/ABC on this.

What are you even talking about? I am not defending ESPN/ABC at all. I am actually so against it that I don't even have cable anymore I have cut it completely because I see how empty and manipulated the television media has become.

So as usual you are not only not making sense, but you are just totally off base with your statements.

I'm off base?? You were the Captain Obvious who started this thread and you truly believe you are enlighten anyone. We all aren't that stupid. You need to get over yourself.

HAHA No you have to get over yourself.

You're out of your mind if you think everyone on this forum already knew that Jenner and his reps negotiated with ESPN during the negotiations for his big "reveal" interview and that he made a deal with ABC that he would do the big interview with Diane Sawyer if ESPN agreed that they would give Jenner the big award during the upcoming ESPY's.

Every single non ESPN sports radio show killed ESPN for this decision and said it was about money and ratings the day this was announced. Dan Patrick, Rich Eisen, Boomer and Carton... spoke exactly about this in detail about this the day it was announced. Unless people just crawled out from under a rock today this has been covered by every non ESPN show before. Only ESPN/ABC has defended this selection

Have never watched one whole episode of the Keeping up with the Kartrashians.....wife watches sometimes. I could care less what CJ does with her life and don't give a crap about any of them. Sad commentary on American Society that people are fascinated by this drivel.

Thank you for sharing. As you obviously know, whenever a movement is usurped by a small vocal minority, this is what happens. You see, they take over the movement through their rhetoric and they must prevent any others from doing the same.

I usualy think the big TV interviews tend to be connected to book deals, movies and TV shows with companies in the same corporate umbrella. When CBS's 60 Minutes started pimping out newsbreaker interviews with people who had book deals with their partner publishing house.... that was sad.. seeing the man behind the curtain.. on a show with such a pedigree as "60 Minutes".

There used to be a real "Chinese Wall" between the news divisions and other parts of a business.. and the corporations involved were smaller and more focused. We've lost something wit all the mergers and acquisitions and focus on the stock prices that results in ridiculous stock awards to the movers and shakers.

So not a single show mentioned the connection to the Diane Sawyer negotiations. Got it.

The ESPYs are a made for tv thing.

It was devised by ESPN to air the night after the MLB All Star game because it is the slowest American sports night of the year. MLB is on break. The NBA, NHL, NCAA, and NFL are in the off season. You do have MLS and is a day before the British Open so those athletes may not attend.

With the EMMYs, Tonys, and Grammys there is an industry group that votes so the general public (viewers) have no vote. With the ESPYs I think it is a group of ESPN senior employees and leaders that nominate for each category with fans voting online. For a couple of categories I think these ESPN employees make an internal decision.

Does ESPN make any claim that the ESPY's are voted on by somebody?
I think it's whoever they want to pick and they make no claims otherwise.

If I make up my own awards, I get to pick the winners.

That's a fair point and I agree.

But you'd like to think that whoever is picking the winners is doing it based on that person deserving to win and not the result of a quid pro quo agreenment. Personally, I didn't watch the ESPY's and don't care about them because I think the entire concept is absurd.

Well said. And yeah I don't know why people would ever watch the ESPY's.

SI.com did a good story recently where they noted the ESPY's executive producer (other media sources confirmed that this non ESPN employee, owns her own production company in Southern Cal) is basically the one in charge in spearheading a lot of the decisions (ESPYs is her largest client...what better way to continue yearly contracts than to create controversy and record TV ratings) into who wins awards like this one.

ESPN's decision to give Caitlyn Jenner an ESPY award, more Media Circus

It wasn't a coincidence that ESPY's announced Jenner was the Courage Award winner on the same day Jenner was on the cover on Variety Magazine. Plus, they knew Jenner would promote the show/award to the gazillion sheep on twitter, which Jenner did on the say day with link to the show/award and said: "What the hell am I going to wear?"

Meanwhile, Lauren Hill lies buried in the ground after her courageous fight to survive and then the unselfish move to help raise millions of $$$ to help others.

I think something else that came into play was the incident from two years ago when their site Grantland did a story on a person named Dr. V who invented a golf club. They discovered that this person was transgendered and revealed so in the article against their will. Dr. V committed suicide as a consequence. ESPN giving the award to a transgendered person is also an attempt to make good on that tragedy.

I've said in other threads and maybe in his one already I watched the ESPYs. It was simply because I was going thru the channels when I caught Carli Lloyd on the preshow. I wanted to see if she was going to be a presenter or receive an award. I also said I cannot fathom how they could give the award to anyone other than that poor young lady who only wanted to play in a basketball game before she died. She was the definition of courage to me.

I didn't watch a second of anything to do with Jenner.

What's killing me are the people on this board who are taking the ESPYs as if it is some life-altering award whose value cannot be stated enough for its impact on the world. It's reality TV doing what it needs to do to get people to watch. Don't like it? Don't watch it.
