they said that "blackbird" is a derogatory word. is it? I dont know. If it is, then I dont have an issue. If its literally only a species of bird and super-woke people are making the name into something it wasnt, then, yeah, the name change is stupid and unnecessary.

for example, I understand why people wanted the names "Orange Men", "Red men" "Redskins" changed. fact is, those are derogatory.

McCartney said in an interview that "bird" in England is a girl, so he was thinking of a "black girl" in the American South when he was writing the song.

Lost in the weeds is that the school likely paid a marketing firm 6 or 7 figures to come up with replacement name options of Sharks, Eagles, or Falcons.

They didn’t have to change it. They had been using a lion as their mascot and logo for like twenty plus years and decided it probably made more sense to make their team name something that was related to a lion.

Yes. My daughter was a student at LIU Post when this all happened. They merged the sports teams across both campuses and didn't want to adopt either of the existing names so they started fresh.

Because that would essentially result in the school with more students voting to keep their current mascot, making a vote moot.
