SHI Stadium - what will it look like in 10/15 years?

Lol. We can’t even sell out the existing stadium. Best case scenario is club seats on the west side and maybe sections of regular seats on the 50 yard lines. I doubt we will ever see regrading North end zone or a 2nd deck over the South end zone.
What’s not helping draw fans is 4 straight years without a B1G win at home. Difficult to generate interest from casual or potential new fans with such a dismal record at Shi Stadium.
Small steps of progress needed. Any expansion talks are 8 years away at a minimum.

Do you go to games at Penn State? Did you go in the past 3-4 years? The guy running the game day experience for the last 2 years was at Penn State for a while. Just wondering if Penn State fans like the nonstop barrage of blaring music, noise and not a moment of silence or allowing the marching band time to play during the game.
I personally like it. It brought life to what was a very sit on your hands fan base. Some people hate it. They seemed to have found a balance between the two. It seems like night games and big games it trends more to music while day games and rent a victim games they let the band play more.

Really - Having a serious problem taking advice from a PSU fan - your dump is the worst stadium I have ever been in - and that is saying something. Just a horrible mess - 12 inch seats and forced to sit next to ........ nevermind.
You will get no arguments from me. Beaver stadium is a dump. It in major need of renovations or building a entire new stadium. I think you will hear more about the plans I. The next year or two. Like I said before in this thread likely there will be a reduction in capacity and focus on fan amenities. The days of adding more seats for more revenue is over.

Do you think it is a divide between older fans (liking the less frenetic/noisy atmosphere) and the younger fans liking the constant barrage of song samples and DJ blasts? Does the PSU stadium have a distributed sound system (speakers throughout the stadium), or a set up like SHI Stadium, where the sound is directed from one end of the stadium by a single bank of speakers?

It all comes down to if we become a perennial + .500 team and bowls every year with an occasional big win season or if we stay struggling and get to a bowl every 3 years or so. If the former happens, you will start to see some need. If later happens- we may just see upkeep.

Have heard that the stadium seating is very crowded/tight. Some people call it an "erector set."

Seems other B1G stadiums are being renovated with more premium seating and hospitality clubs, like Camp Randall.

This is the best post in this thread. The days of stadium expansion are over.

I would like to get some better lighting inside the stadium, so night games are a little brighter. Don't feel like it spreads out enough.
Been saying this for years. The light stanchions need to have better lights or a longer length.

Some good commentary on the thread.

As for my opinion…I don’t think it will ever get “bigger” but the possibility of getting better will probably happen. It’s has to.

I appreciate everyone who works the concession stands. Just hoping, when it gets cooler out, and we buy hot chocolate.... that it is actually "hot" !!!😕

Yes the older fans tend to not like it. I am about the dividing line is at 45. Penn State also has a single point speakers with a few distributed under some of the upper decks.

The stadium seats are very cramped. Erector set is great but the best I have heard is a high school stadium on steroids. I laugh when people suggest it hold events like an nhl game.

Wish we could do like at Great Adventure where you buy their mug/cup and use it for the whole season. For fountain drinks and maybe a hot chocolate or coffee option.

That to me seems a like a no brainer for a better fan experience thing.

Maybe they can do better lighting and distributed speakers a the same time. The scoreboard speakers are way too loud, though they do drown out the dying transformer sounds from the lights from time to time. The two combined are like we're being subject to extreme interrogation... some of the games have been torture too.

Hell, I'd just settle for concession stands that are open after halftime.

They used to do that for coffee & hot chocolate: you'd buy a travel mug and get refills for a buck.

That would be good for the environment too. Surprised that Rutgers has not already implemented and encouraged this?

I am trying to remember this but I can’t recall when it was?

You could do in a few ways…colors or number/design etching.

Red one year, white the year after and then maybe black.

Or keep it red but vary the design/number every year…Block R, Knighthead, Sir Henry, the Horse, etc.

Very strange they never revived this.

They did it for years, I think I have 3-4 of the different versions they used to sell. I loved it because for $5-6 I got an RU travel mug with which I could rep the university as I was taking my coffee with me.

Disney makes a fortune off their refillable popcorn buckets. I was there once for the first day of some "Figment" popcorn bucket at Epcot and the line, I kid you not, was at least 6 hours long. Lunatics. Its $20 for the hunk of plastic and you refill for a $1. It is supposed to be while you are there staying at a resort... but most people seem to never put popcorn in it.

Disney does have the scale to make something like that work.

As for the hot chocolate/etc at Shi.. I recall they always had trouble keeping the stands supplied... especially upstairs. Maybe they need a way to put the refillable stuff on tap.. hot coffee and hot chocolate pipes from some central brewing location as the stands don't seem to have the equipment nor recipes.

The PSU music volume makes our stadium music volume seem like a quiet lullaby 😃

Stadium upgrade comments were very interesting.

Most people in general view college teams playing in an NFL Stadium as a negative with little upside.

Although it is true there are some negative aspects of playing in an NFL stadium, there are also positive aspects of playing at one.

Most or all of the stadium upgrades that Rutgers fans would like to have are already part of the
fan experience for Pitt Home Football Games at Heinz Field.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers want Heinz Field Stadium upgrades they discuss this with the Pittsburgh Stadium Authority who then sponsors the upgrades.

Pitt fans are the recipient of the changes.

Club Seating at Heinz Field is a wonderful way to enjoy a football game.

The area around Heinz Field have been developed so you can enjoy tailgating or go to one of the many new bars and restaurants around the stadium before or after the game.

Since Heinz Field is only about 3.5 miles from the Pitt Campus mtigates some of the negative.

The biggest negative about Heinz Field is it is too big for Pitt (capacity about 70,000 fans).

Pitt like Rutgers only needs a capacity of about 50,000 fans (Old Pitt Stadium Capacity).

Pitt can fill the stadium if we play Notre Dame, West Virginia (watch the game on Sept.1) and Penn State.

Adjustable stadium capacity (50,000 to 70,000) can be accomplished with "Tarps" (IMHO).
Tarping Heinz Field down to 50,000 capacity for Pitt home games has been discussed on our board.

Tarps were used extensively at NFL, NHL and NBA stadiums during the Covid era.

Schools spend millions of dollars for new football stadiums and stadium upgrades for just 7 days a year (28 hours total time).

Fortunately for Pitt they can invest their money in other more productive ways.

Example last week UPMC broke ground for a new 17 story 636 bed Hospital on Pitt's Campus (Oakland) to be completed by 2026 at a cost of $1.5 billion dollars.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

I don't think Homeland Security will allow us to use those refillable cups 😉 😂... Our concession stands need major upgrades to add a full tap system for various drinks and actual cooking equipment.

If you think this is remotely true I have a bridge to sell you. First of all UPMC medical system has a completely independent budget apart from the university. The athletic department is not giving money to build hospital.
You also completely gloss over the fact that the Stadium Authority is taking a fee out of every ticket Pitt sells to help pay for those. You also completely neglect to mention that Pitt pays the Steelers rent. The Steelers make money off of parking and concessions of Pitt games. So while Pitt doesn’t pay directly for projects they certainly are not getting for free and building hospitals with the money.

Still a hell of a better deal than what Temple has with The Linc.

I'd be very surprised if we ever downsized to below 50K. Like UNC, we should convert most seats to full individual chairbacks, except for the student section. I think our current seats are 21" wide (could be wider at 22" or 24"), but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. UNC chairbacks with armrests are 22" wide, so we'd only lose ~2,000-2,500 seats, if we converted the 39,000 seats in upper deck (~10,000) and lower bowl (~29,000), excluding south end zone. Current capacity is 52,454, so losing 2,000-2,500 keeps us at 50K and adding suites or more club seats on the west side would add 500-1,000 seats.

Yes. Just get top quality that fade too much and too quickly and be pink in 2 years.
The ones at Giants Stadium I sat in for years stayed pretty red.

But I know what you mean as the old scoreboard at Yurcak faded to pink rather quickly. Same with the roof at the Stadium.👎

Yeah. Find the right ones and they're hopefully good for a while.

The next B1G outlay will be the football practice facility. That will eat up years of fund raising. $$$$

Just the facts Jack.

University of Pittsburgh (PITT) and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) a profile in synergy.

In the synergistic evolution of their Research, Educational, and Clinical programs the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have followed what is good for one is good for both. The collaboration is underpinned by UPMC's community mission including support for the academic and research objectives of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. From the outset the senior leaders of Both Pitt and UPMC committed to collaborative decisions on key issues. Under this coordinated decision making model UPMC oversees all Clinical activity. PITT remains the guardian of all Academic priorities, particularly Research. UPMC's financial success underpins the model. A series of integrated agreements formally defines the relationship between UPMC and Pitt, including shared Board Seats and UPMC's committed financial support for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition both institutions have made Research a Priority.

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is a $23 Billion integrated non profit Global Health Enterprise that has over 92,000 employees and over 40 Hospitals. UPMC has Hospitals near State College.

US News (2023) Americas Best Graduate Schools ranks ALL of Pitt's Health Professions (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Clinical Psychology, Occupational Therapy etc) in the Top 20 in the Nation.

In fact, if you compare all of the outstanding Research Medical Schools in the B1G and ACC, The University of Pittsburgh Medical is ranked higher than everyone with the exception of Duke University School of Medicine.

I have a question for you nut. When US News ranks Research Medical Schools, I see Penn State University School of Medicine is not listed in the rankings. Why is that.

Yes, Pitt pays rent to use Heinz Field but the amount is very reasonable.

However, the Pittsburgh Steelers pay rent to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center football practice facilities which they as well as Pitt share.

Again a profile in synergy.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Phil has Pitt in the Top 20 ranked #11 in the Nation and saying they and Clemson have one of the best DL.
