SIAP: Oskar Palmquist to join RU in January, as in like 2 weeks

sooner he practices and meshes the better. Could also be an excellent scout player if his shooter is as good as advertised.

Great news. We know he can shoot, just needs to work on his body and other aspects of his game. Hopefully now he’ll be able to contribute next season. We could certainly use him.

can't wait for the traditional redshirt "he's the best player in practice" threads/comments

joking aside ... getting here early is huge. That jump start of learning, developing, meshing, etc. is significant, especially while the team is in season. He'll get to see the venues, go through game day routines, get a feel for the schedule/adjust to the scholar-athlete lifestyle, etc.

Saw on twitter. Looks like he’ll redshirt the remainder of the season but I like it
While I am not thrilled at the caliber of recruits coming in, it appears all three are very coachable and eager to learn/develop. Pike has proven he can develop players and make them quite productive. This extra time will hopefully mean we have another Johnson in development.

Issa could shoot, and did relatively well here. Peter never could shoot. Oskar can shoot, and is 6’8. Plenty of development needed, obviously. Hope that clears things up.
Issa missed waaaaay more big shots than he made, couldn't take anyone off the dribble, and never got to the foul line. Decent on defense. Like Doucoure, Issa played out of necessity due to lack of depth. He wouldn't see the floor this year.

One thing that will help is having other players that need defending. There's a reason that Grady Eifert got more open looks than Issa Thiam. It's because defenses had to help off of Eifert to contain Carsen Edwards and their other weapons. Thiam could torch Iowa because they were a bad defensive team who left him open. Didn't work against any teams that actually executed the scouting report. You didn't have to put a good defender on Thiam but you needed somebody on him so he wouldn't shoot.

That's a reductive example (Eifert was a better player overall which also helped) but the point remains. A sharpshooter is better positioned to succeed in our 2020 offense than our 2017 offense.

kcg88 hit the nail on the head....shooting is drastically overrated, if you can't dribble, box out, possibly defend someone, grab a rebound and make a pass when you're pressured by a similar or more talented/quicker player.

The players mentioned were literally 1 dimensional and offered nothing else as a strength to their game.....Issa tried as a defender and had length to bother shooters, but could be driven on and bullied while a player drove to the hoop.

Palmquist will have 10-11 months before having to play a game, getting acclimated here, and seeing how he can fit into the roles, while practicing here. I wouldn't necessarily compare players across coaching eras, without these same coaches, surrounding talent, training table and practice facility.

Great news about Oskar enrolling early. Will help him get a quicker start toward making a contribution next year.
