Simeon Wilcher - 4 star UNC decommit

Playing time at perceived elite programs with 4/5 star players will cause recruits hitting the transfer portal when least expected.

I don’t think we got even a look from him originally.

kid signs an LOI to UNC.

kid gets recruited-over months before he even steps on campus: a top-ranked PG reclassified to 2023.

on one hand you want to criticize the kid for not honoring his LOI - where's the loyalty these days?

yet can you really blame him when UNC gets an even higher-ranked PG, in his own class, months before you get there - where's the loyalty these days?

but as they say - its just business. i.e., college basketball in 2023

Think RU is probably good on pgs right now...Davis, Fernandes coming in, plus Paul coming back. Baye ndongo replacement would be nice I guess but I'd think they'd be happy with what they already have..

I thought Mgbako would've been a better fit, and we didn't get anywhere with him. Why should we feel any different about Wilcher

Was just on Twitter. North Carolina fans are berating dude 🤣. They make our fans look like choir boys

This kid is good but neither he or his brother gave us the time of day. I have seen him play numerous times and I don’t think he is the type of guy I would want on my team for several reasons. I will not elaborate.
Totally agree. CJ did smoke us at the RAC this year but still…hard pass on either.

He and Elliot know each other very well. Not sure that he left because of Cadeau reclassifying. Elliot is also from Jersey (his mom is from Sweden).

I understand there's a paywall but the headline says it all. UNC brought in Cadeau literally a week before Wilcher was supposed to arrive on campus. They basically recruited over the kid. I happen to think that's a bad look and don't blame Wilcher for saying "see ya". There's no loyalty in college basketball on either side.

I posted this on the Roundtable about CJ.

Hoiberg has done nothing but praise CJ. When he lost his starting job, he didn’t pout or leave the team, he figured out how he could help them coming off the bench. He has worked a lot with Jamarcus Lawrence, who is a Rosale Catholic kid too, CJ has not been in any trouble or done anything but be a good teammate his entire time at NU. I know nothing about Simeon other than he has visited Nebraska in the past.

No one’s is saying he’s a bad kid. He’s a player who makes shots but doesn’t do much else to help a team.

Yes but +/- is the only stat that matters.
His team was the best in the country 2 years ago, and one of the best last year, so I would have to believe his +/- is pretty good against the best high school teams in the country.

The kid signed a letter of intent, a binding (well not these days) contract and now he's butt hurt because another player was brought in? I agree, the timing is crappy. But unless Wilcher was out right guaranteed to be the man, he seems afraid to compete for the job. Imagine being a college coach trying to manage a team which can consist of a bunch of inflated egos. Then throw NIL on top of it. What a mess it could be.

Not defending the kid necessarily but what IF he was promised to be the only PG in his class and then UNC screwed the kid by having this other more highly ranked PG reclassify?

No honor amongst thieves?

What's are the slim chances he was told different? Maybe its not fearing competition, but lookin out for his overall best interest. Even if he won the starting job, he would have to share a bunch of the workload with Elliott Cadeau

I suppose when NIL deals are part of the negotiations.. sure.. how can you expect loyalty.. in either direction?

What I am suggesting is that if a program lures someone with NIL money.. then if a "commit" gets a better offer and follows the money.. why would any recruit expect to not be recruited over and see his NIL deal go to that guy instead?

Loyalty is how we got Brian Leonard, right? His brother Nate gets injured in HS.. his Syracuse offer disappears.. Rutgers honored its offer.. so we get his brother Brian. But I wonder how NIL money corrupts this process and what value "loyalty" is priced at these days.

Teams like NC don't normally make those kind of promises. They might instead say something like you should be able to start if you work hard. Outright promises - I doubt it.

Probably true and it’s still the most important stat.

If he was promised to be the only point guard and he believed it, he would be a very gullible person. Imagine a high school kid thinking he would come in an start as a freshman AND be the unencumbered starter until he graduated or otherwise left the program. Slowly but surely, collegiate athletes think they should be getting treated more and more with kid gloves AND like royalty. It's going to go the way of the NBA. Me first attitude, give me the boat load of money, and then players will partially control their employers.

The whole thing stinks

Remember when that point guard from miami (Chang?) threatened to leave when some other kid was gonna get more NIL

That seemed so braven, so aggressive

Yet that was just last year!!! A year later and such a demand wouldn’t cause a ripple today

The landscape has literally changed over night

And not for the better imho

UNC phased the player out....it's the way for schools to get out of overpaying for all of these players that dont have as much value. They have a better or comparable guard coming in for 2024 who reclassified to 2023 and enough depth already.

There's always someone in these threads who make these stupid comments when they have no information on the situation. Everyone is looking out for themselves. So when a team does something that changes the equation they have the right to leave. It's unfortunate that some still think this is the 50s and the school should have all the power and the players are locked in like servants to the school.

Its amazing how fast a basketball program can improve by simply hiring a perceived elite head coach. The same thing happened when Stringer became head coach of the Rutgers women's program.Elite recruits suddenly became interested in Rutgers.

St. John's has Mike Repole. We don't have a billionaire alum who lives and breathes RU. I would not be at all surprised if he has bought and paid for all of the new recruits.

That’s OK these days. Think of him as the Steve Cohen of St. John’s.
