So by how many goals does Maryland beat Cornell and Hopkins beat Duke on Sunday?

I expect MD to win by 2, Duke to win by 1. Rooting for B1G.

MD will win by 3 in a low scoring game. Hopkins wins by at least 5 as Duke is vastly over rated and Hopkins is hitting its stride.

Hopkins choked again. Should have known better.

Yeah, I'm really not sure that Pietramala lasts much longer at Hopkins. Hopkins hasn't been elite in over a decade. 9 tournament appearances, 6 quarterfinals, 1 Final Four, and just 1 B1G championship (2 B1G tourney titles) since joining the league shouldn't be acceptable to their fans or administration during any 10-year stretch. And to add salt to their wounds, their most hated rival and in-state foe is beasting with a national title, 7 Final Fours, 7 conference championships (3 conference tourney championships) during the same period.

Could you imagine Carolina basketball humming like a well-oiled machine while Duke sputtered along without much success for a decade? Hopkins gave up independence to win and they haven't been doing very much of that lately. At some point, someone has to make the tough call.

All hail Duke!
The Blue Devils (15-3) advanced to the national semifinals, where they will take on Maryland. Johns Hopkins ends the season at 12-5.

Hopkins trailed 9-5 at the end of the third quarter after Duke scored twice in the final 16 seconds of the quarter. But JHU quickly closed the gap. A 12-yard laser from senior Patrick Fraser just under three minutes into the final period ignited a three-goal run for Johns Hopkins, which was within 9-7 two minutes after Fraser's goal on a Chris Hubler tally in transition and then within one at 9-8 three minutes later when junior Kyle Marr scored in tight off a failed Duke clear.

But less than a minute later, Montgomery isolated on the wing and scored on the run, then scored off the same play 60 seconds later to spark the game-clinching spree for the Devils.

Marr temporarily halted the run with his second goal of the game with 3:37 to play, but Justin Guterding and Joe Robertson struck for late goals to account for the 14-9 final score.

Duke got on the board 1:16 into the contest and never trailed, lead 4-1 after the first quarter and 7-3 at the half. It marked the second consecutive season that JHU's season ended with an NCAA tournament loss to the Blue Devils.

Marr paced a balanced Hopkins attack with two goals and an assist. Cole Williams added two goals, and Shack Stanwick has two assists in his final game with the Blue Jays. Fraser, Hubler, and Jake Fox each had a goal and an assist.

Just a reminder that the national title won by their crosstown rival last year was their first since 1975.

Duke is going to be tough to beat, I think. They were one of the elite teams in the nation from day one...

Hopkins is entering dangerous territory. The game has changed so much and these BCS schools now have the same support of their programs, if not more.

Hopkins has tradition, but that only lasts so long. Their alums better be ready to shell out some serious cash. While they have it, they are now competing with schools who have some of the biggest budgets in all of NCAA sport.

Once Rutgers gets its facility completed, Hopkins will officially have the worst facilities in the B1G. That was unthinkable 8 years ago. Throw in all of the other benefits of coat tailing big time sports programs (training, nutrition, travel, strength training, support, etc.) and Hopkins can not be resting easy. There are some outward concerns about their President being lukewarm to the program.

They used to be the proverbial big fish in a small pond. That pond and the fish in it are now a lot bigger.

Total Hopkins alumni giving for athletics was about $1.4 million. They didn't break down how much lacrosse got. That will probably have to go up. A number Ivies have friends of lacrosse programs that raise roughly $350k per year, though that's for both men's and woman's team.

That is definitely going to have to go up if they want to stay in the arms race.

Rutgers has struggled with little money coming in from Big Ten but this year we get 15 million, next year 19 million and then the full share of perhaps 50 million per year. You can buy a lot of lacrosse balls for that.

But given lacrosse's share of that amount, how many scholarships do you get?

Got me. Hopefully it is better than limited number given that is split into thirds and halves to recruit now.

Guys we are at the full allotment of 12.6 out of state scholarships. There isn't any more that we can have, or any other team can have.

The facility is job 1. That needs to be at the forefront of any discussion that we need. We are way behind the 8 ball there.

All of our coaching positions need to be paid positions at levels of peers. We have the lowest paid staff in the B1G.

Trainers, nutrition, weightlifting... it all needs to be constantly reviewed and built upon. Beyond that, support levels always need to be increased. I saw how Michigan travels. That team was like a pro team with all of the support they had. They don't even travel with their equipment there is so much. They have their own truck for lacrosse and the players/coaches take the charter.

We are getting better in these areas but we always need to continuously grow. It's like the old adage, if you aren't getting better, you are getting worse. There is no staying the same. Especially in this conference. We are competing with beast athletic departments who expect to win. Which gets back to Hopkins. It's going to take serious commitments from their alums to stay at an elite level.

That's all changed. We're now taking an advance starting next year. We will receive $24.6 mil.. We won't be receiving full payout any longer in 2021 but will be fully vested. Meaning if the next contract in 2023 yields more we get more. But our payout will still be a big chunk of change at a little over $44 mil. in 2021.

But don't expect all of that to go to athletics. A lot will go to eliminating the $15 mil. in direct institutional support( It's really $17 mil. but the school will still pay for Title IX requirements at $2 mil.) and the loan they took out at 5.75% from the University bank has to be paid back. Student fees will remain for the time being as there's no plan to eliminate them just yet.

I had heard that Rutgers wanted to accelerate like Maryland did against later payments. Did not know that it was renegotiated. The point is that we are good position in the arms race going forward as Calknight said. Alums can only provide so much, conference TV money in terms of many millions hopefully will improve the program.
