So now we have to be top 4 in the conference...

Wishful thinking keeps a segment of the fan base believing after decades of futility. The won/loss league record is ignored. Its very similar to kicking the can down the road approach waiting for full funding from the B1G.

This touches on the age old question of why exactly we have been bad.

Also financially NJ is in deep trouble and the cost of RU in state education is way too high. We are not far from a line in sand date where the athletic department has to cash flow neutral.

My theory is the lack of a fanbase is a very big contributor to our woes.

We go 3-15 in a conference that only gets 4 teams in. How the heck are we going to ever climb the ladder and actually make the NCAA tournament. The concept of playing in the NIT just doesn't ever seem fathomable.

Oregon State went from 1990 to 2016 without a tournament appearance. When they got in, they were one of seven Pac-12 teams.

So no, we're not going to get in during a year like this. We need a strong conference so that we can get some good wins, like Oregon State had over future-#1 seed Oregon and tournament teams in Cal, USC, and Colorado.

They also benefited from an easy schedule, playing Arizona and Utah (a 3 and a 6 seed) only once each.

The contradiction is that NJ is one of the richest states based on the income of people living in the state.

I have been saying for years that we should play the best teams that we can find. Our players and fans get "pumped up" for big games. I know the coaches are afraid of having a bad record(that's why we schedule so poorly outside of the conference games), but it to our advantage to schedule much harder teams.

The recruits will take notice of playing the tough schedule if we start upping the schedule.

Best of Luck,
Groz

not if the sos out of conference is weak....if that is weak, the schools can play 200 conference games and the weak OOC scheduling will bring to whole thing down

Based on pure math replacing 2 home games vs. RPI in 200 with a home and away of say 70 it would move the needle a lot.

The question is what 2 games get bumped from OOC?

Bad season for the conference. The compact schedule may be part of the issue. Also Maryland (who had finished Top 3 the previous 3 seasons) and Wisconsin both had down seasons that were injury related, IU is still down.

If those three programs were at their norms the conference has seven teams in.

Easy answer...Stony and Hartford...but seriously where RU errs the most are these awful round robin games featuring the worst of the worst

When looking at RPI and SOS the 40 or so P5 OOC games that are played in a conference are extremely important. In reality 4 or 5 B1G teams getting invited were cemented in December.

One thing to keep in mind when looking at SOS of the P5 teams the conference was way more important than the OOC schedule.
looking at kenpom SOS#s, which are pretty close to RPI
#2 SOS Oklahoma had a nonconference SOS of 103
#3 Texas NCSOS 105
#21 OK State had a NCSOS 310 (hobbs school of scheduling)

Villanova and stanford were 64th and 63rd in NCSOS. Nova finished with a SOS of 20 and stanford 62.
Va Tech and Rutgers 344th and 348th in NCOS. VaTech finished 49th SOS and Ru 73rd

Other than SHU and the 2 B1G challenge games SB and Hart were the 2 highest ranked teams we played. In all likelihood we dump a East Carolina and NJIT

This kind of got off track. NO we do not need to be in the top four to get a bid. It has been 10 YEARS since the Big Ten only got four teams in.

We need longer attention spans, or even just doing a quick internet search before posting. The conference had seven several times recently. Sheesh.

We couldn't support a professional basketball team for some reason.
NJ can't support sports teams unless the team carries the name of a neighboring city from Pa. or NY. I see more people in NJ wearing Brooklyn Nets gear than when they were the NJ Nets. People of NJ have an inferior complex and this is why others (states) dog us.

What you just said sounds like the name on the front of the jersey may be more important than actual results. You just have to be in the ballpark to get in. Otherwise, the committee can't justify a "named team" for getting in.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
