So we should continue to stay silent about the refs right?!

Earning respect from the referees is all part of the rebuild. It is frustrating but it is somewhat expected. Coach has to balance how much of an issue he makes out of it. And I think he's doing a good job with that. It is why coming up from the basement when you are non blue blood or brand-name program is so hard.

Ridiculous refs. The head in sanders bending over backwards to say it’s not the refs are silly.

Bad officiating just makes games hard to watch.

It's one of the major reasons I have a hard time watching women's college games. The officiating is just so so so bad. Even when we're having a great season, it's hard to watch the games, because I know I'm going to be angry at the refs for half of them.

Officiating in men's games is universally better than in women's games, but sometimes you also see real clunkers. Refs are human. Some of them have bad days, and some are just bad at their jobs. We can be critical of player errors, and coaching errors, so there's no reason we can't be critical of officiating errors. Always felt that was a nonsense double standard.

Poor officiating tonight, which made this game frustrating to watch, but the team didn't come with enough in them to get a win today anyway. I don't think the officiating impacted the final outcome, but it still made the game irritating to watch.

Home calls. We get them at home too. It's not the reason we lost.

We don’t shoot well. We play great D. We have no margin for error. So awful officiating does make it much tougher for us. So yes it is indeed a bigger factor in a loss. Corey sits down after 4th foul and Michigan immediately jumps out to biggest lead.

Was poor Officiating the reason why we lost? Of course not.

Was poor Officiating a huge factor in the game? Of course it is!!!

I never understand when someone says you get the calls at home that is bs the refs should be fair whether a team is home or away but with us that is never reality

The refs don't intentionally do it. It's definitely mostly subconscious. Probably something about the crowd and the atmosphere. Ever been a ref?

Again, refs are human. They don't like to be yelled at, and they don't like the crowd screaming at them. Read an article a bit back about football officiating, where pass interference calls we're more likely to go a team's way if it was along their side line between the yard lines where the coach can roam. The conclusion was that yelling at refs does work to influence their calls.

Just like it's less fun watching a game where the players are playing poorly, it's less fun watching a game where the officials are performing poorly.

The unfortunate thing with some fans, is a belief that commenting about the referees only matters if it actually impacts the decision of the game or it has to be a close game for the refs to matter.

There are 3 things that referees that I know consistently mention.

A) Who is favored to win or who is playing matters.....some are aware of where a game is supposed to "land"....meaning if a game spread is 11.5 to 13 like todays spread, they are aware of it.

B) They attempt to block out distractions like listening to coaches on the sidelines, but there are only certain refs that don't get in awe of the magnitude of the game and that they are a part of it (whose coaching)

C) Home court matters (that means they are aware of a foul, but do make mistakes making a call and are apt to avoid hearing about it by making a 50-50 call go against the home team.

The one item that matters and why I believe fans accepting or not complaining about referee calls is wrong is you are fighting a perception and you only change that with positive comments pregame and during the non game days. That means you have to pump up your players qualities to the media, to the Stephen Bardo's, the Jay Williams', the Shon Morris' the others that call your games.

You have to explain and let them know that Geo Baker is playing well, that there are better players coming in recruiting, so the referees can be made aware that the program is changing their perception with more talent. The more that message get sent by the media, coaches and "buzz", that's when you start to see a gradual change where maybe you see less of an impact by referees.

There’s nothing wrong with politicking. We don’t do it enough. One of the games within the game. It’s helping Bob Kraft right now.

This game was pretty bad. Even the gf with limited basketball knowledge knew it.

The refs have killed us all season. It didn’t come down to losing yesterday but it impacted a few other games. I think Pikiell is very frustrated? You could see it yesterday towards the end. But the poster is right about respect. Sometimes calls are made in anticipation of the foul it seems.

Again, when we are ready to win on a consistent basis, we won’t complain as much.

Yep - basketball and soccer, college and high school

So, having been a ref, I'd imagine you'd agree that - just like every profession - there are some people who are better at it than others. And I'm sure that there are days that you felt like you did a better job, and days where you felt like you could have done better.

Refs are human - there is a sliding scale of competence overall, and a sliding scale for each one on how "on" they are for any given game. Sometimes you get bad luck and draw low on both scales.
