Special teams quandry for Wash. St.?

Well, they didn't even have a punter on the roster going into Spring practice. Maybe they'll just kick them all out of bounds this year.

Unless you subscribe to the theory their ST's are going to make the biggest turnaround in CFB history, it's nothing but good news. Their stats were worse than horrible last year.

I can imagine a fight in the RU locker room between all the guys wanting to return kicks against WSU lol.

Leach will eschew the punt as often as he can. 4th and short , anywhere, is right in his wheelhouse. 4th and long between the 40's , he'll go for it much more than most.

I just hope our guys aren't returning a lot of kickoffs after Cougar TDs.

Coug here. Yep, our STs are a complete black hole. Placekicking last year was miserable. A 19 yard field goal failure cost us the Cal game. Our punter was adequate, mediocre but adequate. He, a walk-on, quit the team after Leach wouldn't give him a scholarship. Our long snappers graduated and their two replacements, also walk-ons, left the team. Punting and kickoff coverage was horrible. Our returning game was unimpressive. Knightfan was restrained in his assessment. We were beyond "worse than horrible"; we were dead last in the FBS in special team stats. The Special Teams coordinator, an old friend of Leach's, was canned. Not at the end of the season, not during the season but during a game.

As far as this year is concerned, your guess is as good as mine. A scholarship was expended on a placekicker and a number of walk-ons have been gathered up. Whether any turn out to be efficient remains to be seen. The new Special Teams coordinator is working his butt off to put together coverage and return units. Again, unproven. You have good reason to be optimistic and licking your chops here. We would be happy with a barely adequate mediocrity at this point.

Again, best wishes to you in the Fall. You have done better in the Big 10 than many expected and hats off to you.

Maybe they can see if Jeremy Ito can get another year of eligibility to punt.

It is good news, almost assuredly. We have dangerous return men. If their coverage is weak, we will bust a few big returns. No long snappers? Hello, punt and kick blocks when we want to go after them.
