I was thinking the defense would be a work in progress, with the offense at least keeping games interesting. The spread puts so many receivers in play that one player should not shut down a complete offense. No doubt, going forward, Grant will be a huge loss, but one that good coaching should adjust to. Here's hoping they are up to the task.

we don't spread the ball around because we have a qb that can't throw/run well and recievers that can't catch well. Right now we only have RBs that can run well. Can't do much with that in a spread O unless it's a triple option offense like Navy's

What makes that so hard to believe is you've seen 1AA schools hang tough with D1 schools with a roster full of 1AA kids. Are you saying we have a roster full of D1 kids that can't run this offense? Recruiting must have been even worst than Rivals and Scout even said.

We recruited big slow players for the power O. Those other spread schools recruit speedy agile tweeners (think a field full of Janarion Grants). We need to recruit personal to fit our system. We don't have all the pieces yet and won't for a couple of years.

Last year some smart person here.. not me.. noticed that we were misusing the QBs. That is, Laviano was accurate enough on short throws to do a ball control spread with using the throw to set up the run... but we asked him to hand off too much on 1st and 2nd.. and Rettig was a longer ball guy and would have been better foff for all those 3rd and longs we faced.

I get a sense that this is happening again. And while I do not like CL's QB skills.. we are not putting him in the best position to do what he CAN do. If we are going to call a game with all these zone-read runs on 1st and 2nd.. let a real running QB handle it... and I don't care if he is "ready" or not. If he is in there.. he will become "ready" as the season goes on.

Winnable game. Shame this issue was largely responsible.

VERY winnable game.

Really sad to lose this way.
Yes indeed, a winnable game. We lost to a hurting Iowa team at home. Iowa lost to N. Dakota St. at home 23-21!!! We lost because we're trying to implement an offense that is not built for the kids on the field. Some say it's going to be a year or two before we see the offense gel. Really? I suggest a reality check because it's going to take at least 3 years, maybe 4.

Makes sense, I get it.

This is the offense the coaching staff wants to run. Martin, Hicks, Goodwin, Grant, Harris, Tsimis and Patton are doing fine. The OL is serviceable.

The only position holding this offense back is the QB. Laviano can't run or throw. By putting in Oden, the run option opens up this offense. The team still needs more talent and depth, but a running QB will improve the offense.

It is amazing what can be done with a very good option QB and a competent supporting cast i.e. Louisville. The single biggest factor is a QB that can run the spread offense and Oden is not yet ready
