I attended the open practice and I am really stumped as to who may start? There seems to be a lot of talent on the team and they all appeared to be working hard. Tyia seemed to be taking on a leadership role. I'm also wondering how they are going to give everyone significant playing time. It will be an interesting year. Anyone else who attended have any thoughts?

I was there Saturday and agree it looks wide open. My best guesses are Walker, Singleton, Osh Brown, Martino and Lafayette. The only 2 I'm fairly sure of are Walker and Singleton.

Walker, Singleton, Brown, Petree, and Morris??? So hard to say. Who's running the point? I'm looking forward to the season.

Petree is #25 on ESPN's top transfer list. Top 25 transfers

Will be interesting if we can play Walker/Singleton/Brown all at same time; I get sense they are all mostly back to basket post players.

Starting PG I agree is biggest question mark. I feel like Petree was brought here to start (and score).

I know it is early but after watching the practice I am worried about chemistry on the team. The players had problems with simple drill instructions or maybe the drills were new to the team. It is going to take time for this team to jell. There is a lot of talent but shooting was lacking at the practice. They also need more practice time with the '55'. With the talent they have, the team will be ready by conference play. Hopefully sooner since I am going to the Paradise Jam over Thanksgiving. I still believe we will go to the dance! GO RU!

Playing time is going to be very tough to come by with so much depth. It will be a problem for everybody this year with seniors taking that extra year. I wouldn't be surprised to see some redshirts.

My starting five,........this is tough.....................

pg - Shug Dickson ,V. Morris, S. Guihon, K. Sanderlin(redshirt??), D.Marshall
sg - Liz Martino, J.Mason, J.Maddox, D.Marshall, S.Guihon , S.Lassiter
sf - Lasha Petree, E. Lafayette, S. Lassiter, A. Sidibe
pf - Osh Brown, C.Cornwell, (E. Lafayette, A.Sidibe in T. Mack role/small ball)
c - Tyia Singleton, S. Walker, C.Cornwell
*Starters

True pg is a little thin this year. I think J.Mason was a pg before knee injury a few years back. I think Liz or Lasha could also fill in there if necessary. Haven't seen enough of D.Marshall or S.Guihon to know if they can handle point duties against BigTen comp.

I see our bread and butter being good ball movement, leading to Shug and Lasha shooting, slashing & scoring or dishing to Tyia or Osh for layups. Driving lanes open due to perimeter shooters (Liz, Jailyn, Joyia, Sayawni, and maybe Awa Sidibe and Ericka Lafayette).

Unless K.Sanderlin looks really good and ready to play at top Big10 level, I would hate to see her waste a year of eligibility sitting and watching. A redshirt would make sense .

Hope CVS gets them the shooting reps in practice and doesn't wear out the legs. I think that has affected our shooting in past years.

This is also what I think would be the best the starting 5. Speaking as a former
coach, I would love to have this "depth problem." The season should be very
interesting, especially if they develop chemistry early.

Agree 100%, Etienne! Chemistry is key! I like this lineup because it keeps experienced ball-handlers on the floor at all times with Morris and Mason as 2nd string guards.

With Shug D. still out and no known return date, My updated starting five looks like this:

PG- J.Mason., V Morris, Sayawni L., (K. Sanderlin needs to redshirt)
SG- Liz M, Sayawni L, D. Marshall. E. Lafayette
SF- Lasha P, A. Sidibe, Sayawni L., D. Marshall, E. Lafayette
PF- Osh Brown, T. Singleton or C. Cornwell (depending on opp.. matchup)
C - Sakima W., C. Cornwell, T. Singleton

That is a rotation of 12 players that I think are the most ready to do battle. Joyia, Steph, and Ericka L would see time sparingly. All need to be stronger with the ball. Ericka can defend in the 55, therefore gets included in the rotation. Could not understand Steph at point down the stretch of today's game. At the 2-guard spot maybe, but she is not your best option at that point in the game.

Osh is out of position too when playing on the wing, if she is not going to shoot when the defense sloughs off about 10 feet away. She is out there attempting to execute Tim's offense by looking to pass into the teeth of the defense.

Tiya needs to sit at this point. She can come off the bench for energy providing rebounds and blocked shots. She's too turnover prone and is not progressing fast enough with her footwork and shooting. Coming off the bench may make her work harder on those things. She needs that Jordan Wallace senior-year sense of urgency, in regard to stepping up her own development. And coaches need to help her get it done.

And those starters need to get somewhere between 25-30 minutes a game minimum (barring foul trouble or something). Nobody really has to play 38 and 40 minutes like Arella, Diamond, and TMack did last year, since we do have the depth.

If these first few games are an audition to see who can do what in game competition, then the first ten in the list above are the group I would go forward with for the most part. Occasionally, Ericka and Destiny for energy off the bench when running the 55, both are active and well suited for that defense. And from what we've seen, Destiny can score some points if left in the game.

I like and agree with your analysis, especially on Osh.
One point I'm still not settled on is the PG. I like Mason a lot but am waiting for her to show me more. Think Lassiter is a better penetrator. Have seen flashes with Morris, maybe she hasn't played enough.

Agreed. Mason and Lassiter are pretty much interchangeable in the lineup I present. They bring a lot of the same things in terms of experience, patience, and Bball IQ.

I can only imagine what Sayawni would be if she hadn't had all the knee surgeries. You can see she 'gets it' in terms of knowing how to play the game of basketball.

I think Jailyn didn't look good yesterday in a lot of folks eyes due solely to the poor job Tim has done getting his system integrated. She took the brunt of the bad look because the ball was in her hands as the shot clock expired again and again. But the other four were standing there totally confused, without a clue of what to do, giving her no options.

I kinda like Sayawni off the ball because I think that she is the better three point shooter out of the three pg candidates I chose. The staff just needs to make the 3pt line more of a priority and get these girls who have the tools to be good shooters from behind the arc the reps needed to be successful shooting them in games. And as I always say, shorten pre-gameday practices if necessary, so they will have their legs for shooting.

You could see these things in the Stony Brook team. They practiced threes in the shootaround before the second half started and hit some timely ones that were daggers to end our comeback hopes. They did the same thing to St. Johns but only at a better clip. In today's game, we all see the need to be able to shoot the 3 to be an elite team.

Sorry for going off on that tangent about 3pt shooting. Just had to get that in there.
