Steve Longa

They'll probably just put him back on the practice squad. They've been moving Zaviar Gooden from the practice squad to the active roster and back for several weeks now. They just had their starting running back hurt but not enough to remove him from the roster without threat of losing the guy entirely, so they had to make space to sign Forsett. No big deal. Longa is regarded as a longer term project, so we should see a transaction signing him back to the practice squad in a couple of days.

While I don't know if personally he needed the practice squad money. This was a bad decision to leave. He would have 30000 tackles on our defense by now, would have graduated, all while uping his draft stock.

Wasn't he on the 53 man roster? That's 5 weeks of NFL salary, not practice squad. And he might get signed to the practice squad as mentioned above.

Yes a couple years ago I remember we had 26 on the screen. I counted only 20 this year. It has dropped quite a bit and very well can be less by next year.

No, he was on the practice squad all season. They put him on the active roster on 10/8 and waived him from the active roster on 10/11. As banged up as they are, they may need to let him go because they need the practice squad spot for a guy they can play right away.

Yeah, coming out a year early was a horrible decision on his part.

His stock peaked already. Nothing would improve his stock unless he can run a 4.5 and put on 20 lbs of muscle.

A year with Kenny Parker would definitely have given him the muscle. Not sure about the speed though. The only downside to staying would have been the risk of injury.

We could have used him in this year's Michigan game. In the game last year, I heard his name repeatedly on the PA announcing the tackler!

Do practice squad alumni get shown on the big screen during games? Our numbers in the NFL are diminishing.

Yes, all practice squad players are on the big screen.
They are on an NFL team.

I call bullsh*t on his stock had peaked. That's some agent or draft grading nonsense. Tyler Matakevich was a nobody he played his senior year put up a ton of tackles and got drafted and now plays for the Steelers. He didn't get faster, just bigger and eye popping stats.
Longa would have benefitted from a defense that actually has a scheme, instead of one that just throws sh*t at a wall. He made a bad choice. Longa's making somewhere around $6,000 a week, Matakevich makes $450,000.

Silver lining. We now have a stable of players to point to who have left early and have done diddley and are much poorer for it. I won't point to specific players who people think they know their fiinancial situations, all of whom would be much better off if they stayed. They effed up. We can debate whether they would have faired better if they stayed. Some things are patently obvious. However, it is self evident that their decisions were poorly informed at best. Their families are suffering from it and the program they committed to is as well.

He started for 3 years, was in school for 4. If it's not working now I doubt it would be all that different a year from now. factoring in the risk of injury, new coaches and potential for a bad team I think the decision was fine.

Whither Juwan Jamison?

FYI Longa is back on the Lions Practice squad as of today, and they released the other linebacker Gooden from the practice squad. Good news for Steve

Are you saying Rutgers paid players? How can they faired better by staying vs a job that pays?

I spoke to Steve about this after he declared. He knew the risks but after talking to decision makers it was time to go. He spoke with the old staff, new staff, and NFL and everyone believed another year would not change his stock. Another 100 tackle season doesn't improve anything, another year of beating his body doesn't help, any decreased production could make him look worse and he wasn't gonna get any faster.

If he was going to get another 100 tackles it would be better to get it on the NFL. I think he just looked at all the contact he had in 3 years and decided to make his move.
