Strickland to Wisconsin.

Can somebody of color please explain to me a black athletes attraction to Wisky? The demographics don't make sense. The teams are much more heavily white focused...and I don't in any way mean this in a racist way. I just don't get it.

Have more fans, win more games, have a nicer looking campus, be better academicly, have better facilities (that will happen, but at wisconsin level?)
I get all but the academics. Wisky is superior? Really? And it matters that much to a bball player?

Big difference losing guys to Bo Ryan when we were in the crappy Big East/AAC vs. losing guys to Greg Gard when we're in the B1G.

Were not going to win every recruiting battle. We havent had a winning season in how many year? Its going to be uphill for us in every battle regardless of how it looks. Maybe he didnt like our campus, maybe the facilities let him down, more than just the staff involved in this. He noted prior to the visit him and his father felt comfortable and liked the staff. Not every kid is right for RU and vice versa.

If that is the case then why are we recruiting players we can't get?

Anyone who doesn't have doubts about the coaching staffs recruiting is not a realist. I am not concluding that they can't recruit at this level. However so far I don't have evidence that they can. We will know a lot more by this December.

Ahh yes getting the likes of Mathis over his 20+ other suitors or Shaq Carter(Xavier, WSU, Auburn, ISU, KU type offers) is not being able to recruit at this level.

You are always a pessimist on everything including players. The staff is in it with players who would usually only look at us if they had no other options. Enjoy life a little Mr Realist.

Also, the loyalty thing doesn't really hold water in this case.

Wisconsin offered Strickland on February 15. Rutgers didn't offer until a week later.

Not saying that had anything to do with his decision, but it's not like Wisconsin just rolled in and scooped him out from under us.

It’s going to be tough slaying around here till we have some success in the BIG. We will get recruits. Geo, Kiss, Montez. Wisconsin has a tradition we would die for! The kids that want to buy in to the future of this program we will get. The future is bright on the Banks! I will now take off my rose colored glasses!

Looking at our win totals....we do.

Hey, I'm as frustrated as you are and I've been a fan forever. However, I think 3 star recruits should be right in our wheelhouse. I'm not happy with what just happened with Strickland, but I don't for a minute think a player like him is out of reach. Pikiell did get Mathis and Doucoure. Who knows what goes through a high school kid's mind and why they make the decisions they do?

I do agree that Pikiell and staff need to step up the recruiting, however.

Can't win without getting the talent... can't get the talent without winning.

The superior winning tradition as the major reason for selecting the school is too simplified. Many kids these days have less of an appreciation for winning history, compared to fans on a message board, especially dating back decades, much less 5 years ago.
If that were the case, Rutgers would have lost out to UConn (4 NCs and winning for decades) for Mathis, as well as, Carter (Iowa State and Purdue as examples). If that were the case, we'd lose out to most any school for any recruit since the team hasn't sniffed an NCAA Tourny for many years.
It's possible he may have seen, or been sold on, better seasons coming up from Wisconsin but that's future looking and not the past.

Wisconsin had their worst season in more than a decade while Rutgers has (sadly) our best moment in more than a decade and we still lose out. It's depressing but I don't know why I even expect anything else.

What happens on the court determines success in recruiting, not stars or what schools offered.

I want to see us win and think I have a good handle on why we aren't. if it isn't the coaches then our players aren't good enough. I find it absolutely crazy how most posters think all of our players are great. At PITT fans throw Dixon out because he doesnt go to Final 4. Here it doesn't phase us when our most important recruit can't get playing time at a JUCO school.

I am a 10+ year season ticket holder and I usually have a lot of fun going to basketball games.

That's ok all we need to do is replace Sanders with a grad transfer

PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO GET A FOUR YEAR PLAYER

We do not need to get another Mensah...plenty of 5th year guys out there, then its all in for Mulcahy

I would still go after Diouf though for the other opening

Always makes me laugh whenever anyone here throws out "pessimist" like an insult... We haven't been to the tournament in 27 years! There's very good reasons to be pessimistic.

This! And it’s also Wisconsin, a consistent proven winning program.

Also, I find it funny how people think these kids just make decisions like robots. None of us know the vibe or experience he had on the visits. It’s not just about basketball. Maybe he really hit it off with players or loved their campus. Maybe he didn’t like New Brunswick or dorms he visited. It’s like when you applied to college, the decision likely was about more than academics alone. You visit a campus, take a tour, maybe your friend is going there, could be a bunch of things. You don’t just go apply to schools and pick whichever one is hardest to get into.

All in for Mulcahy, huh?

Who is Tavon Jones looking at right now?

Based on 247 and his offer sheets he has the following offers: SHU, St. Peters, SBrook, Niagara, St Joes, Quini, Umass, Hofstra, BUffalo, St Bonnie and EKU.

Doubt the SHU offer is commitable at this point and Bonnies seem to have the edge along with EKU

That's the part that kills me. How often in FB and BB has a guy taken a visit to Rutgers, not committed, visited somewhere else, then committed there? Or had a visit to Rutgers scheduled, taken another visit first, and committed right away without visiting here?

But with us OF COURSE he commits to the other school immediately after visiting here.
Recruiting even a 3 star player is very difficult when you lack cache as compared to the competition.

@soundcrib i agree i like jones and hes local to me so i have a little bias. The coaches would know better. But could be worth it.

I don't know what is happening but there have been a few rumors that he might go to a Prep school. Maybe RU should still check him out. I think he could play some point guard.

Easy...

I mean, FWIW mensah ended up being a one year gamble so it's not like it killed us.

I haven't heard Jones has the grades and may need to Prep for a year, but do not know for certain....and he's a good player that does a lot of things well, but there are better players that are probably suited to fit the long term plans or a 1 year rental, if it came down to it....

you cannot rest on laurels...problem is we need a team of Mathis if we want to win so yeah landing him is good but this has to happen regularly. This program lacks overall talent, its the least in the conference, you cannot just say oh its okay we got a guy..doesnt work that way, you have to stockpile talent to win

its a loss..the staff needs to land a guy on the level of Strickland...its imperative and must for future success. Mandatory...the sooner we win these battles the easier an incredibly tough rebuild can actually come to fruition. It cannot be spun away. It is a big miss to not close. Its hurts, period.

Guys

I said this in the fall...and I’ll repeat

I wanted Mac

I wanted Strickland

But there is an undercurrent that people know that the guy the staff wants is mulchay ...REALLY wants and this is an influence to a 2018 PG when Baker is 2017 and mulchay is clear plan A, B, and C for 2019...

Do not under estimate this

Now, maybe the staff needs to be a little bit more key on who they think their plan A players ...maybe not. It worked for Mathis

If it works for Paul mulchay, then we aren’t crying about Mac or Strickland in two years

Risk, reward ...that’s why coaches get paid the big bucks

This question misses the point. There are states such as Alabama, Kansas, Missouri and dozens of others that are home to many white supremacists , KKK members and assorted other riffraff, and all of them attract black athletes to their universities. Why? Because Madison is not representative of the rest of Wisconsin no more than Lawrence or Tuscaloosa represent Kansas or Alabama. All of these college towns are usually bastions of progressive politics and diversity and create comfortable environments for all. The athlete is not choosing to live in Wisconsin or Kansas but to spend four years in an an environment that embraces
diverse cultures and liberal values. In that respect, Madison, Wisconsin is every bit a progressive
environment as New Brunswick, New Jersey.

True but we really lucked out that he was pushed out. Right now probably 90% of the 2018 class is committed so we are looking at the 10% left. I would rather punt and look at the whole field in 2019.
