Students - Are you really boycotting this game?

Has there been any communication with RU about a new tailgating location for students? A boycott would be awful and would really hurt our team's shot at any type of home field edge on Saturday.

Is anyone taking the student's to task for this move also planning to boycott Yankee Stadium?
No, they are not identical. But I think both are navel gazing exercises that can only hurt the program we purport to support.

I get the allure of tailgating, drinking, partying, I really do. I was a student once too

But doesn't anyone really like watching football? I mean why deprive yourself of a B1G home game for this?
Football? Football? What is this football thing of which you speak?

I love watching RU football, and have been hooked since coming to games as a freshman in 2006. However, some of the football I've watched at HPSS, especially in the past 3 years or so, has been rather difficult to do so while sober. So I can empathize with the students' ire at the lack of viable pregame tailgating options on Busch.

I sent an email this morning with a suggestion for a new tail gating spot with a few new policies that would absolve the university of liability, but also allow us as students to have our tail gate. Whether they'll respond or not who knows, but I did use some of the good suggestions from this board.

Back in my day, we would take over the president's office and hang out on his fine furniture getting stoned while insisting that our demands be met. We didn't actually have any demands, but it was a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Oh wait, never mind. Doonesbury flashback.

Good for the students. I wonder how all of us non-student fans would react if the University suddenly took away all of our tailgating options.

I understand that this was not the decision of the Athletic Department. However, the University has made a sudden and terrible decision after allowing the AD to promote this game day event to the students

They did take away all our tailgating option for Maryland next year. So I am boycotting the game.

If we have multiple instances of out-of-control parties with deafening music and start stealing food and drinks from the tailgates next to us, vomiting all over the place, etc., then we're going to find out for ourselves how it feels.

Oh, that could easily happen. The university has been chiseling away at tailgating options for years. If there was ever a school that could somehow consider it advantageous to enact an outright ban on tailgating, it would be Rutgers.

If this was truly the work of Middlesex County or some other entity outside of RU, then boycotting an important nationally televised, conference home game is especially shortsighted and stupid.

Yeah none of that happened in The Alley and hasn't happened since 2013.

The students have moved on. It's time for you to do the same.

If you think that's bad you should have seen the mid-late 90s.

Fondly remember those day's, kegs in all of the club offices, scavenger hunts for an ounce of "medicinal" maryjane, streaking(OK I'm getting misty now).

You sure the boycott didn't start last week? The student section was virtually empty by halftime. Not sure what it looked like for the 1st quarter.

Adults - are you really trying to tell students what to do in regards to an activity that draws you to home games as much as students?

I applaud you for taking action and trying to make a difference rather than sitting around bitching. Hope it works out.

Here's a suggestion.

Best of luck. Truly wishing for it to work out for the students.

Thanks! I'm upset about the Alley situation just like any other student would be that went there. And I've been vocal in defending it here today, but just words does nothing. So hopefully something gets done because it is a good idea to have a designated area for students where we won't be a both to donors. I'm also going to put up flyers I printed out at the bus stops and student centers telling people to go to the game and bring signs if they really want their opinion on the Alley being shutdown to be heard. Nothing says look at us like national television and a student section filled with signs that say Free the Alley :joy:

Tell the administration that the Alley or your other suggested spot is a safe space from microaggression from the conservative donor base in the blue and yellow lots, and they will have the approval in place in a nanosecond. [cheers]

Where was "The Alley" located? I never knew this existed in the first place.

When I was in school, my friends and I would meet at a central location and drive all of our cars to a paid lot together to ensure we were able to get a big enough space for our tailgate of 50-80. Usually had 7-10 cars minimum in the caravan.

Are the students locked out of Johnson Park somehow? or do they just want to complain about something that most schools do not even make available for their students?

ALL Students should all boycott the 1st quarter, since the team wont likely be there yet anyway, then show up to their seats en masse at the start of Q2..... that might have a little bit of dramatic effect

Honestly the alley surpassed my expectations for attendance and probably shocked the people who organized it.

I think the only solution the school can sponsor is to create an area where IDs are checked and its a 21 and over only crowd. They can go nuts with the DJs and all and it would be a really cool environment and something students can look forward to when they turn 21. Just like they look forward to the bar scene. By controlling who comes in, you also limit the number of people to a safe capacity. I think that's what they should be doing and make it feel like an upperclassmen award of sorts. Maybe even require the students have scanned into a certain amount of games to attend the 21+ alley

You are really driving this microagression thing home today, huh?[winking][roll]

Age limit isn't the problem with alcohol. It's a lack of proper education on safe consumption. Lower or abolish the age limit and let it be taught in school as part of the health/phys ed. curriculum.

That's all fine and dandy, but that only helps with maybe one-quarter of Rutgers students attending football games (possibly less, since some seniors have yet to turn 21 and underclassmen appear to show up to games in stronger numbers). The rest of the students aren't interested in showing up to games based on the "promise" of future fun tailgating, only once they turn 21. Given that such a fun student-intensive event was summarily shut down after only 2 games, I can't even consider it much of a promise.

Of the things that bother me on this board, grown men criticizing college students is right up there with telling others how to spend their money. I've seen RU students bashed for "leaving early" (when thousands of seats for adults are empty the entire game) and other fans bashed for not "supporting the program" by paying more money for a ticket they can find cheaper somewhere else. It's really embarrassing stuff.

If you purport, you must support.
