Stuff Yer Face to be featured on BTN tonight at 10pm

its not about the decor its about the food and the bolis are an institution at Rutgers

I agree they are. And they should be highlighted and celebrated. But I want the next generation to be able to enjoy them too. And many more after that. And the way that business is being seemingly managed .. that Rutgers tradition may be in danger. They need to realize you can't just rest on past successes

New Brunswick is in Central Jersey, NOT North Jersey!

Although I'm craving a boli right now!

That place has been a dump for a while, but we used to go there for bolis when I was in high school.
But there is a fine line between a dump with character and a dump that's just a dump. It needs work.

Not really. It's fine. Especially fun in the summers now because of the whole outdoors bar and eating area.

Love the spot, love the food, but it HAS become a dump mainly due to the complete lack of care taken outside. I'm neither fussy, nor anal, but the last time I sat at the outside bar I was completely disgusted by the complete lack of anything, whatsoever, being clean.

Now that you mention it, I do recall that one of the last times I was there, a large insect of some sort (probably cockroach) had scurried across the outdoor bar scaring the living piss out of most of the people seated there. And, you know, people drinking at a bar tend to have a lot of living piss in them. So it wasn't pretty.

The food is still very good but a shame that you want to take a shower after leaving there. Should really put some money into it to spruce it up a bit. Would be a shame to lose it.

Why do people keep talking about losing it? Is their business suffering lately? I haven't been in about four or five months. But up till then, it was always doing a great business whenever I was there.

Can some of the posters saying there are issues highlight them? I saw the bug comment...but I was there maybe 1-2 years ago, and it could have changed, and didn't see any issues.

Issues....

In the dining rooms the chairs padding is worn and often times ripped or in the process of coming out
The tables are sticky
Tables have markings and drawings from several decades ago (beyond the character and charm point)
Bathrooms are just unacceptably unclean

Those are just the really really obvious ones I can remember from last time I was there approximately 1.5 years ago. From the other comments, doesn't seem like it's changed. But we're not talking about a massive investment here. Understand that its expensive but any restaurant general manager should be budgeting for periodical upgrades for this sort of furniture & equipment.

The outside bar, last time I was there, there literally was food all over it, bugs (not just mosquitoes and flies...), and trash everywhere. It was basically being used - the bar area itself - to store trash bags and tubs and tubs of recyclables. Not sanitary, in the least bit, and I was there with a client looking to move back into New Brunswick for the 1st time since he graduated.

I don't expect much from that place and go once in a blue moon, but yes it is much dirtier and outdated than what it should be...Meaning they make enough business to make renovations that for some reason they just don't (bathrooms are way worse than they should be).

Honestly, think the food is overrated. If not for the memories I had from being an undergraduate going there I would never go back.

you shouldnt be in the outside bar, thats for millenials

the bottom line is the bolis are excellent, I keep coming back every year. If you want overrated try the Grease Trucks because basically everything they serve is disgusting and inedible. Yes it was great at 21 when the bars closed but pretty hideous now

not sure what they want, its a popular hole in the wall college joint that has students and returning alums as their clientale. It has charm

Ate there sunday. Boli was fantastic. Didn't notice anything awful inside.

I've probably been to SYF close to 1000 times in 36 years (used to go 3-4 times a week when I lived in NB at various times in the 80s) and I still go at least every month or two. Haven't noticed the place being any dumpier than it ever was before, recognizing it is a college bar and it ain't going to be up to friggin' Stage Left standards. Bolis are as good as ever and I love the run down divy look and feel of the place - feels like "home."

There are many shades of gray between Stage Left and a Grease Truck. SYF doesn't have to place itself far on the lower end of the spectrum if it doesn't want to, and we shouldn't expect or excuse it. Watch the 1985 commercial, has the place changed at all besides the outdoor bar area?

Where are the grease trucks nowadays?? I plan on heading up to the game and may stop by with my son.

Agreed with some views here but not others. Why should we accept that because its in a college town the place has to remain completely unkept and outdated? They pull in families of students and alumni. We're not talking about Scarlet Pub or Old Queens here, where its a drinking hole only. I won't even begin to compare to other B1G college towns because that's where Easton Ave would get put to shame.

Yes, it would, people have no idea! Even Purdue, when I went out there years ago, had better "college bars" than we did. Much bigger spaces. Ours are tiny. Good, don't get me wrong, but there's a whole different level out there.
