If this topic has already been discussed, I apologize, but what an improvement. They actually look like they're playing football.

Agree with you but I hope Cioffi learned from his one big mistake. He was too polite along the sideline.

Quite honestly if Saquan Hampton and Ross Douglas weren't on the DNP he may have been pulled.... Cioffi deserved to be on the bench for awhile after his ole'...there was no effort on his part ... Cijoffi had the opportunity to make a tackle on Jordan ... if you can put two hands on the runner you should make the tackle....if you watched the replay it makes you wonder... the TV Analysts who sounded very pro Rutgers were astounded he didn't wrap him up by the legs...

Jones is a football player in the truest sense and that is why he passed Najee Jones on the depth chart...only wish Jones had not over reacted and stayed around ...worked hard and proved them wrong...maybe he gets back....probably not.

I think tackling has improved a bit. Not where it needs to be yet though, and it wasn't just Cioffi's two-hand touch approach on the one play.

Watching our game and then watching OSU vs. OK in the evening highlighted how much more violent the game is played by the elite teams. I don't expect this to change overnight. But change it must.

One thing about Schiano's defenses is that, by the time he left, we had become much more violent on D. We're not back to that yet, but Ash has mentioned a couple times now that he wants our D to play more violently. So it will come.

100% agree on this. It's astonishing how much more physically elite defenses play. RU needs more violence from the OL, too.

New Mexico is far from a bad team. Our D shut them down pretty well for 3 quarters,,,and IMO we wore them down with good conditioning.....NM looked worn out in the 4th quarter

Yes, he actually pushed the QB along with his hands so he got to the Endzone faster.

Cioffi will improve big time as the season goes on.

unacceptable by cioffi.
It's really hard to win when you have seniors playing that soft.

Who are the tough guys on our team?

Both of our safeties right now are awful. I honestly don't know who is a worse tackler....Cioffi or Hester.
When is Hampton coming back ?

Tackling has improved, but still not where it needs to be. Decrease in penalties reflects the more disciplined team that Ash promised.

Good observation about tackling and penalties. Yes, I noticed we have not had the penalties we had under Flood for the first few games.

I am very confused by this post.

At the risk of piling on Cioffi: those who watched the game on television, as I did, and saw the numerous replays of his "attempt" to tag or pull the flags of the runner he had a clear sideline shot at, can easily recall the form he used last year when he was bulldozed backward at least 5 yards that made ESPN's evening highlights.
Im just guessing that Ash never had a starting safety at OSU who tackled as poorly as Cioffi.

And BTW the other safety is worse.

They will get better. They already have, from what I can see. So I don't doubt the progress will continue.

I think we have more guys around the football this year. For the last couple of years, it seemed like we'd only have 1 guy in position to potentially make a tackle way too often.

When I rewatched the Washington game, I didn't feel so bad about the defense. Their qb was on fire that day.

If you watch Snapchat you'll see tackling drills practically every day. I'm sure that it is every day - but they just don't show it all the time.

Constant teaching and drilling and practicing = better tackling.

OT, but I'd expect RU Basketball to play much better defense and to rebound much better this year for the same reasons. More emphasis and "practice makes permanent."

When is Hampton coming back ?

If you go back and watch the 1Q of the UW game on YouTube Hampton was getting baptized to college football. He is very inexperienced so don't hold your breathe on him being that much better at the moment. Future? It's possible.
