Tasha

True what you said, I took this as a done deal:
"She is coming back as an assistant as is another previous head coach from the SEC. Looks like a decent staff."
So posted that way and if you bothered to read this :" I'm talking about being notified after the hire", in a previous reply from me , you'd see what I meant and I meant if deal was finalized.
Seems like you're complaints have been set straight before but you keep on posting them.

And by the way this shows( in a post I put on this thread) when what I said is shown to be wrong
I correct it :
(edit: should have stated "Could be CW is in talks with Tasha",then complained about Hobbs not announcing the hire, if one was made . I had said:Could be Hobbs is in talks with Tasha , but nothing settled yet and until settled, not hired yet )
Just to be honest, I assumed Richard was just passing on what he was hearing. Just as he kept us up to date on the head coach search - what he was hearing. They may or may not be "finalized" as choices, they may or may not be signed yet.

Years ago I knew someone else who was friends with one of the Assistant AD's at the time, so again, he would once in a while share something. But he only knew what his friend told him, he didn't have first-hand knowledge. I would expect that Richard would also be relying on a source.

To fill up the time until some announcements come, could I ask questions about what I think was one earlier scenario guessed at in this thread. If there were to be signings of Tasha and Stephanie White, what does everyone think of those hires, should they happen? It doesn't look like either has done very well recently in the coaching ranks that I can see. Would Tasha be the recruiter hire and Stephanie be an X's-and-O's hire? I did love Tasha as a player here and it would be nice to see one of our own come home. However, it doesn't appear that either has any recent Jersey ties. Do you think the Vianney coach Karpell would entertain an assistant coach position? Is the ND assistant from down the Shore (Mabry?) actually in play? Inquiring minds want to know lol. I guess I'm just hoping Coach Washington can put a disciplined and entertaining product on the court because I think RU fans really can/will again support the women's b-ball program big time. Many of the women's programs across the board have really taken off for the most part recently and it is so sad to see WBB, once the flagship women's program, lagging so badly. Go RU!!

The AD has very little to do with “hiring” assistants. They provide budget and do background searches and cursory “handshake” interviews.
What I am very surprised with is that Hobbs didn’t make sure that these assistants weren’t in place prior to Coquese being hired.
You don't hire assistant coaches before you hire the head coach. Our pool of coaches was limited to start due to the late start. Hiring the new coaches assistants before she/he is on board would pare the interested parties even further.

Perhaps so but this situation is , perhaps, just a trifle different.
We have with Michelle , and Nadine, spent a year and a half bonding with the number 5 and 33 prospects in the country. Cutting her loose afforded you zero chance at either recruit.
Anyone, recruiting wise, we hire now is in high probability not going to be a recruiter of that caliber.
There was no problem retaining all 5 members of the support staff whom she could not possibly know.
As for the high school coach when her stars leave after this year and next what value does he have recruiting Vianney?

anyway I suspect these thoughts may seem like posting in anger they are not. It’s just what I feel

Didn’t say you hire assistants before a head coach. An AD, as part of the interview process, would normally have asked what assistants she would have on staff. The assistants “should have been in place” prior by coquese not Hobbs. As I said earlier an AD has very little to do with hiring assistants. It is the head coaches responsibility to bring in his/her staff. Coquese or any new hire should have had “commitments” from her key assistants prior to hiring. Hopefully she did and we will all be surprised and happy when there is an announcement.

I agree with you. One would think she would have assistants lined up in the event she got the job.

In the actual hint, it isn't Stephanie White but Nikki McCray-Penson, who was head coach at Mississippi State briefly but had to resign due to unspecified health issues, however, she is a known breast cancer survivor from about 10 years ago and her resignation letter suggested that cancer had returned.

If she has recovered her health, and is indeed a candidate / hire, she is most likely a good one, although she may be on some short lists for future head coaching positions if her health is indeed stabilized.

Neither Tasha or Stephanie White, for that matter, were successful head coaches, but that does not preclude being excellent assistants - think Jolette, for one. Carlene Mitchell was very successful at Rutgers but had a terrible head coaching time at UCSB. So I would not judge an Assistant Coach hire by their Head Coaching records.

Just because a good/great assistant fails at the top spot doesn't mean they can't go back to being good./great assistants.
Sometimes they might become even better as an assistant from what they learned as a HC
Also some who fail as a HC the first time around are able to prove capable of being a good HC the second time around after earning a second chance because of being a great assistant after being let go from their first HC position

You think so? We have regulars here for WBB who say this is normal? This is somewhat confusing since a HC hired for the most part has a listing of those he or she perceive as possible candidates for an assistant.

I think coaches have a list of who they want to target as assistants. But, you still have to entice them to come over and move to New Jersey...it's not for everyone,.especially with the high cost of living. $200,000 or whatever it will be goes a lot further in a lot of states. About a 25 to 30 percent cost of living difference.

There may be some very good women's basketball head coaches at some lower level programs that would make more money as an assistant here. Schools like Rider, NJIT, FDU, William Pat., Stockton or Maine.
There was mention in another thread that there are former RU players as assistants and HC's around the country. Hell, hire Tekay Mack as an assistant. She'd fire up the team from the bench.

It was being sarcastic . Tim may be a nice guy, a good assistant but a HC at a P-5 school not so much.

New contracts start July 1. They may be waiting to be closer to that along with getting full staff in place. Recruiting for top talent in 2022 is unfortunately done, though 2023 may be a late start.
I mentioned that I wondered why July 1st would be when hiring would be officially announced , this post gives a good reason for the official announcement to be on 7/01.

But I still wonder why the media hasn't reported on RU WBB hiring Tasha as an assistant

Dunno RE media. Could be a sign that AD office is doing better with plugging media leaks. My impression was that was a problem in the past.

Leaks were a problem in trhe past , bad news traveled quickly from the AD office by ( unnamed) media sources to unfriendly journalists making for articles that put Rutgers Athletics in a bad light .

But I would thing a leak that wasn't authorized, but the nod and wink from the AD, would be put out by a unnamed source to a friendly journalist would have surfaced in order for RU WBB fans to receive some good news and keep their support for the program .

In just about every coach hire...HC or assistants, the names get put out in the press about 24-48 hours before the official school announcement. It's really like clockwork. You'll get that tweet from someone that says, "Rutgers expected to hire XXXX per source".

But this is a women's BB assistant coach hire. If the HC hire did not get out a day or two early, I'm pretty sure the assistant coach hires won't get leaked by the media. Don't expect a tweet from Rothstein or Andrew Slater.

Assuming what RU72 is accurate, looks like "leaks" of good news may be slowly coming out.

Its official

Coquese Washington just added Nikki McCray-Pensonthe (former head coach of Miss St/Old Dominion) and Tasha Pointer to her staff.

I would have been happy if RU had hired Tasha Pointer to be the head coach. But she's basically 3rd on this totem pole. I was critical of the Washington hire but I have to say, this is a tremendous job by Washington.

No headcoach worth anything, is going to accept a job without the opportunity to bring in their own staff.
