It's a great team sport, isn't basketball? You need shooters but to set them free you need post players. You need post players but in order to avoid the D collapsing and doubling you need shooters. Of course you need guys who can break the defense down and get into the lane so you can bounce down to your post players or kick out to your shooters or kick out to your shooters who can pass into the post. And you're not going to make every shot so you need rebounders who can get second chances. And that's just the half court on the offensive end.

Break Down Defenses = Corey Sanders
Rebounder = DeShawn Freeman
Shooter= Geo Baker
Post Player = Freeman, but not very efficient

The issue is while we have 2-3 guys that can consistently do these things needed to win, other teams have 6-8 guys, also they have guys that do multiple things not just one, we do not have many multi-dimensional players.

Omoruyi is a nice player for us, but hes not really a post player, he is a decent rebounder, not much of a shooter, and can't break down a defense.

Thiam is a "shooter" but an incosistent one right now in his career, he can rebound due to his length and height but he is not a guy who wins rebounding battles, most of his rebounds are of the easy variety.

Williams is a good role player, great rebounder for a guy his size, plays with grit, and does the little things. He was brought here to be a shooter and in 4 years he never found a consistent stroke.

Doucare is too young to say what he will be other than a rebounder at this point.

The other guys just are pretty much just there right now.

In the end it comes down to individual skillsets blending into a team concept.Since the talent level at Rutgers is below most B1G teams, there will be breakdowns in execution in basic fundamentals such as running a fast break,making put back shots and boxing out for rebounds.The lack of shooters/scorers overrides everything coaches try to do to mask that deficiency.

I see the “team” that Coach P is building and I like it very much so far. The addition of Kiss as a shooter, Johnson as a rebounder, Mathis as a passer, Carter Etc. The next few years will be exciting.

That’s if these guys come in with those skill sets at a high level, we can’t assume Johnson will be a great rebounder or kiss will be a knock down shooter or Mathis will be a great playmaker. We can hope for that, but everything in the past leads me to believe that we will be slightly disappointed by their skill sets

Good post. The other thing most people don’t see is defense. That is almost entirely effort and as my h.s. Coach (and many others) used to say “offense sells tickets, defense wins games”.

Pike is building a roster and a culture here- the hard part about the RU job is he probably needs to break through next year to continue momentum before negative forces start conspiring against him...
