NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Rutgers football fans descending on George Street today to eat, drink and watch the Scarlet Knights battle Syracuse will notice something different.

Gone are the tents and canopies that once covered the outdoor dining venues up and down George Street.

Under Mayor Jim Cahill’s Executive Order 2021-10, restaurant owners had until noon on Thursday to remove the tents.

That seems kind of stupid and counter productive.

“Doug Schneider, owner of Tavern on George at 361 George Street and the Olive Branch at 37 Bartlett Street, said the restaurant owners and mayor’s office have worked closely since the early stages of the pandemic.

“I’m very grateful for the city’s cooperation, the mayor’s office, for having the executive order to allow us to continue to have on-street dining and maintain everything that we’ve worked to build during the pandemic,” he told TAPinto New Brunswick on Friday. “I think moving forward, that commitment allows us to invest in our infrastructure. We can all get a little better tables and chairs. If you see today, there’s probably about 100 Rutgers-themed umbrellas now on George Street. Those types of investments can be made when there’s longevity to executive order.”
