The names may, or may not, be known to Rutgers fans today, but these were the top players from the start of football on the Rutgers Scarlet and Rutgers Chanticleer through the 1932 season:l

The December 14, 1932 Targum picked the All Time Rutgers Football Team 1869-1932. Underlined players went on to play in the fledgling American Professional Football Association (APFA) that changed its name to the National Football League (NFL) in 1922:

left end Paul Robeson ’19;
left tackle John P. Toohey ’15;
left guard Howard P. Talman ’17;
center E. Gaynor “Mickey” Brennan ’25;
right guard Howard Raub ’24;
right tackle Bob "Nasty" Nash ’16;
right end Homer Hazel ’25;
quarterback Bus Terrill ’26;
left halfback Henry “Heinie” Benkert ’25;
right halfback Elmer “Toady” Bracher ’18;
fullback Jack Grossman ’32

Those were the days players stayed on the field and played offense and defense.

These type of lists will always have new names the longer the program exists. And, if you notice, some of the latest players were on it right before publication.

Here's another list just five years later. This one is from the opinion of the only Rutgers football player to also become an acting president of Rutgers -- Dr. Phillip Brett, graduate of 1892 at Rutgers and was done in 1937. They were:

James Bishop 1891 and Paul Robeson ’19 at ends;
Robert A. Nash ‘ 16 and John P. Toohey, Jr. ’16 at tackles;
Howard P. Talman ’17 and Howard B. Raub ’24 at guards;
E. Gaynor “Mickey” Brennan ’25 at center;
John E. Elmendorf, Jr. ’14 at quarterback;
Homer Hazel ’25 and Carl E. Waite ’26 at halfbacks
Jack Grossman ’32 at fullback.

Brett was specifically asked about his Bishop selection and was quoted as saying his teammate Jim Bishop would have taken to the modern game of football like ducks to a pond.

And yes, Jim Bishop was related to the owner of Bishop House at Rutgers. He was also a two time captain in 1889 and 1890.

Pretty amazing already that they had an "All-Time Greats" list as far back as 1932. I'm almost 54! and my father at that point was 1 month old! Pearl Harbor/ US WII was still 9 years away!
I was seven that year. Had NOT even heard of Football let alone RUTGERS. I was happy,contented.Now I'm a message board addict.Wha'ppened?

How great would it be to jump them into a time machine to see what Rutgers has become in the sense of a major university.

With the exception of Jack Grossman, Rutgers Class of 1932, all the other players in the first post either played their careers, or started under, Foster Sanford (1913-23), College Football Hall of Fame coach.
