SEC football brought in $740 Million last year compared to the Big Ten $770 million. Big Ten Academic Alliance universities engage in $10 billion in funded research annually. So enough about Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State or John Hopkins University for the matter ever leaving. That's an olympic size swimming pool comparison to the drop of the bucket the SEC has to offer.

I tried to make the same point, not quite as well as you did, in another thread and was essentially told it was a non factor. I believe it is a huge factor. Not only for the money it represents but the faculty support it fosters for being in the BIG.

It's absolutely a factor or else the CIC would never exist.

Not disputing the premise of the posts here, but that's $10B in research funding by the schools within the B1G. The disproportionate majority of that funding has nothing to do with the B1G whatsoever.

The link provided shows a couple of cute research collaborations. The B1G dissolves tomorrow and those schools get 9.99B in research funding...

Not true! They're able to Leverage the demand as a CIC unit. That's how it actually works and that's why the Big Ten Academic Alliance exist. This is the Big Ten's most important commodity which is why the AAU membership so important. In fact the Big Ten can put an end to this and promise Oklahoma to help make them a CIC member. Oklahoma would drop everything and run with the membership. Dude you sound drunk.

Anyone arguing that football drives the bus at the B1G is grossly mistaken. If they insert SEC into that statement then it is factually correct.

What RU Cheese said. Most of the collaborations involve non-funding issues like libraries, technology, equal opportunity. Where B1G schools work on grants it’s because they are joint applicants, for example, the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center lead by UW-Madison, which has Michigan State as a partner.

If you want a good example of the role the BIG plays in cooperative research see this: https://www.bigtencrc.org/

You are correct on this point.

The ACC for example has something similar to the CIC which is called the ACC Academic Consortium.

Pitt does about $ 1.0 Billion in annual funded research which has little to do with this association.

PITT (academic side) and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Hospital Side) are responsible the considerable research funding they receive.

UPMC is a $23 Billion integrated Global non profit Health Network comprising over 90,000 employees and over 40 Hospitals. They are the largest non governmental employer in Pennsylvania.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

You can’t count UPMC. That’s a fully independent, self-governing set of institutions that just serve as teaching hospitals for the Pitt Medical School and allied health sciences.

Except not a single penny of that $10 billion comes from the conference. No research money is distributed by the alliance.

They don’t. The CIC doesn’t seek research grants. They share certain resources and have purchasing agreements but there are thousands of similar agreements in the country. Most schools belong to multiple.
The AAU membership is just the presidents being high and mighty. It something they like to brag about but is meaningless.

Not true, a number of UPMC Board members are directly appointed by the University of Pittsburgh.

More than just teaching hospitals.

UPMC is home to ground breaking Research conducted by faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School etc. University of Pittsburgh scientists contributed to more than 18,000 Medical Research Papers in the last 10 years, ranking UPMC among the TOP MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS in the country. These investigations stand at the leading edge of Research, Developing Procedures, Drugs, Medical Devices etc. for tomorrows Medicine.

Rutgers will use their developing/expanding Hospital Network for more than just teaching hospitals going forward.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
