Gio seems like a nice guy. And he's new to this position. He appears to be a warrior who pays respect to the army around him. He doesn't arrogantly take credit for his accomplishments and he takes full responsibility for the failures of the entire team.
But maybe it's time for him to stop being so nice.
He has EARNED this position, and has EARNED a leadership role and he's still figuring out how to truly be a leader. And as stated in Sun Tsu's Art of War 'Treat your men as you would your own beloved sons. And they will follow you into the deepest valley' but the direction of loyalty is pointed toward undeserving leadership. (Ash and DM)
Ash and DM simply do not lead. They do not lead by example or hold accountable the weaknesses with the team as a whole. They allow team members to work for their OWN benefit, instead of working for the benefit of the team.
A true leader (coach) would never allow his team to accept less than perfection. (Laughing and smiling on the sidelines during a horrible defeat.) And perfection is defined as a UNIFIED selfless effort toward a goal, not willing to accept failure.
But it seems like this coaching staff and 'team players' obviously operate on a 'every man for themselves and pass the buck' mentality.
Sun Tsu also said that 'He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.'
So if DM or Ash has not earned the right of sovereignty, than the leader (Gio and others) of this team must take matters into there own hands. Audibles. Suggestions. A voice of unified reason (without ego) against poor decision making.
If us fans in the stands can see that the defense has holes, gaps, weaknesses and we are not taking advantage of them, than there must be a mutiny, on the field, in the locker room and in practice.
Inexperienced and insecure leadership has turned against each other. That is why Rutgers lost today. It's not lack of talent or athletic ability,
And it's the lack of confidence on this team, and the lack of selflessness that had allowed failure to be acceptable.
It's time for the true leaders to lead. You earned your spot. Do what needs to be done.
