The Flush

I've had a number of conversations with various people about the current state of the program. I've watched the press conferences. I've read the reactions. It seems that the only element of realization that's missing among the fanbase is that we are in Year 1 of The Flush.

There's a new sheriff in town. Thing is, he's not Kyle Flood. He's not the Nice Guy who wants to pat everybody on the head and give them a participation trophy. He's a successful Xs and Os guy from the premier coaching tree in NCAA football, with a tremendous amount of passion and emotion.

Chris Ash is putting in a new system. Not just schemes and plays, but a new system, a whole new program, top to bottom. The players he inherited have to adapt to that new system and they have to be good enough to play in it.

The thing is - and this is the tough news to hear - most of them aren't. Most of the players on the team wouldn't sniff the field at OSU. Or Michigan. But they're the guys we have right now, so they're the guys who have to play in the new system.

It's that new system, along with the passion and persuasion of the coaching staff, that's going to pull in new players who can play for a top Big 10 team, the kind of team that Chris Ash is trying to build. And until they get here, we'll continue to struggle with the guys we have.

There's no overnight fix for a program in this current state. This is Greg Schiano Year 1, all over again. Ash has to rebuild the program and he has to do it in such a way that new, better talent comes on board and flushes the existing talent from the roster.

That's what happened with Greg. It takes a nearly complete roster turnover to be able to evaluate the potential of a new staff. Schiano took over in 2001 and the team broke out - finally - in 2005. It broke out, quite memorably, when Mike Teel walked onto the turf at the Carrier Dome to start his first game.

Trust me, I get that everybody is frustrated. But this is going to take some time. We're gonna get the poopie kicked out of us for another season, then things will start to pick up.

We've seen this before. We know how it ends. We just have to wait for it.
No habla Ingles.

Many thought a new coaching staff would develop the current players and coach them up. Teams like Michigan State and Wisconsin were often cited as examples. So far that hasn't happened. I don't like threads that bash our current players. We get that most of them were not 4 and 5 star recruits. But most were 3 star recruits and by any stretch of the imagination should make up a team that is at least competitive and capable of getting a first down, completing a pass and scoring at least 1 point against any team in the country. Exactly what has Ash and staff shown so far that warrants our unconditional confidence and faith?

Yes, the Indiana game is a MUST win. Beat Indiana and steal a win against the Nittany Lions in their house and show some progress in QB play and this rebuilding year is a success.

Lol, sorry the are the two best teams left on our schedule. We actually have a better chance to beat MSU this year than those two.

Indiana was able to hang with OSU this year and are the clear #3 team in the East. PSU smoked an undefeated Maryland.

You really need to start to pay attention to the rest of the conference or you will just keep setting yourself up to be disappointed.

The focus should be on beating Illinois. If we can't beat them, then there us a good chance we will lose out.

However, if we win then there might still be some life left in this season.

This ties into something Greg said at TD Club meeting many years ago...

My personal opinion is that partially improving the talent level will have a multiplier effect and help to improve the rest. Practicing against poor talent does nothing to push the players to achieve their best. Each new infusion of better talent will improve some of the "old" players as well.
He said while at "The U" , when they were still "The U", with all that talent Tuesdays/Wednesdays where the best days for the coaches since this was the day the depth chart for the upcoming game was figured out. And the battles on the practice field were bigger than what happened on Saturday.

Good post - except the part about Teel starting at Syracuse in 05. Hart came back to pull out the Uconn game which was crucial to that season. Hart finished off the season including a strong game in the Insight Bowl.
And I think this is what RU4Real is talking about with Hart/Teel below...

This kind of thing helps the team in the long run.

It was the 'Cuse game that broke the season open, though. I was there, it was epic. You just knew, from that point forward, that things were going to go well.

The sit-down was just the thing that Ryan needed to get his head back in the game. A lot of people don't give Hart enough credit, I think. He could have rolled over - he could have been flushed. But he fought back, he got his head right and he went on to be a great asset to the team that season.

Yup. We need to recruit and build depth everywhere. No shortcuts.

This. The most winnable game on the schedule that is left is Illinois (and I think by far). If things break well, it might be possible to get one other win somewhere.

This Rutgers team has actually been hit fairly hard by injuries at positions where they don't have much in the way of replacements. The team that will take the field this week is not of the same quality of the team that played against Washington, or even Iowa.

QB play is crushing this team right now. It isn't even that there is no time to throw (there isn't), it's that the qbs are very often making incorrect reads -- handing off when they should keep and vice versa. If there's one place to look for improvement in the remainder of the year, it's there.

But right now I think it is not possible to expect any other wins this season until we see how the team responds against Illinois. If they don't play competitively (and start moving the ball on offense a little), there is no reason to expect they'll win any other games at this point.

That was a typo; I meant to say beat Illinois and steal a win against PSU and the rebuilding season will be considered a success.

You absolutely NAILED what I have been saying and hinting at for a while

This is a complete DO OVER...

We have seen an incremental decrease in talent for four straight years that has hit the field since 2012....and you only turn that around with recruiting and development and that is NOT a one year proposition

Next year...from my eyes and opinion...you will see 14 of the final depth chart of our last game be true frosh...and there will just be a lot of bumps along the way

In 2018...I expect 30 of the 44 of the final game two deep char to be true soph/Red shirt frosh/true frosh...MORE talent on the field...but still not enough practice time and NOT enough time in the weight room to make the difference We catch a break with a weaker schedule in 2018...so the W-L record has a chance to be better than what we may be on the field that year

It wont be til 2019....Ash's FOURTH YEAR....that maybe 33-35 of 44 two deep chart are from Ash's first three classes ad will have enough EXPERIENCE and PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT to make a diference on the field to make a turn around possible...and it will be young and still take more seasoning....

so then it make take til ASH's FIFTH year...2020 where we have an upperclassman group that has experience AND talent AND development to turn the corner

I am hoping we can hold the fort and sneak 1 or 2 seasons at 6 wins in the 2016-2018 period...but I'm not holding my breath.

This is not a new coach taking over underachieving roster of players....its lacking athletes

I mostly agree with all that. Except that I think some of the players we have now may turn out to be better than expected due to (a) a couple/few years of better position coaching, (b) more strength and conditioning, (c) better competition in practice, and (d) a young coaching staff getting better at game-planning and adjustments each week for a couple/few years.

So while I'm not banking on it, I think there's reason for hope that the current team can outperform expectations based on incoming talent level.

Still gonna take some time and a boatload of hard work and some luck. No shortcuts.

I agree with the OP, but I will add that I have been a little disappointed with Ash so far. I'd like to see him take some more responsibility for some poor play calling and decision making, and lose the smug attitude. It's not only talent and he's proven nothing. We have better talent than some teams like Tulsa and UCF that have acquitted themselves much better against opponents who've destroyed us. Some of that is on him.

You're right that he has proven nothing yet w/respect to scores.

But you're wrong about him having to take more responsibility. He actually said, in his post-game press conference, that the 78-0 loss was all on him and that he has to do a better job of preparing for the game and preparing the players for the game. You think maybe he should have shot off his little pinkie toe to show his contrition too?

I can't tell you what the true talent level among the current two-deep at Tulsa or UCF was for the games you're thinking about. But we've played the last couple (top 5) teams with a two-deep consisting of a lot very inexperienced players or players with 0 to 1 other P5 offers or walk-ons. So while we have some talent, it's incredibly sparse and a lot of it is injured at the moment.

If you read the really good pregame analysis done by whoever that Michigan blogger was, it listed exactly one of our players as being outstanding (Hamilton). Which, when measured against elite Big Ten teams, is probably about right.

We're guaranteed to suck for the next 2-3 years. CA and his assistants are guaranteed their salaries. Beyond that, nothing is guaranteed. .
