I met Pikes at a fundraiser in the city a few weeks after he was hired and was immediately on board. Like almost all of us, I’ve been a staunch supporter of his, however that support is starting to come into question.
Will he improve/ learn from this debacle of a season or retrench? Either way with $24mm left on his contract, we’re stuck with him for a minimum for 3 years unless he does something stupid a la Mike Rice or Pat Hobbs.
His comments so far have been the schedule has been too tough (retrench), staff is great (retrench), and we have a great recruiting class coming in (as if high school recruiting matters anymore - retrench). None of these sound like someone who is appropriately reflective in this situation.
I really hope he learns from this season and hires a real GM that can moneyball our roster next year but I fear it will be someone he or someone else on the staff has a prior relationship with.
I hope he upgrades the staff and brings in someone to run a more efficient offensive scheme that holds players accountable. I fear we will still see terrible shots like Derkack clunking open 3s. Next year he will say he’s run a great offense before bc we scored 80pts a game this season, despite the fact that’s due to 2 nba lottery picks - a caliber of player he will never have again.
I’m hoping for the best but the few comments we’ve gotten from him point to the worst possible outcome. He has squandered a once in a lifetime opportunity for RU and himself, and I fear he has learned nothing from this. Steve please prove me wrong and make some real adjustments.
