Instead of the Barn, the floor at the RAC should have the Jimmy V name. No one sees the Barn. The RAC floor, and any subsequent floor we have if a new gym ever came along should be Jimmy V Court. With the B1G Network we have national reach and it would get seen and everyone would know that Jimmy V started at RU. We need all the recognition we can get and let's face it, we've got nobody remotely recognizable who came out of this program. And I'm sure someone will chime in that he played at the Barn. To that my response is BFD, our arena is the RAC.

Brilliant idea to honor Jimmy V, bad execution by RU.

Think about it. Makes tons of sense to name the court where RU doesn't play its games in honor of our most recognizable BB alum. Not.
I see some sarcasm in your post. Why don't we name the RAC court after Paul Robeson. He had no connection there either.

There are activities at the Barn and while Jimmy may be our most recognizable BB alum, most of his notoriety was not achieved at RU. This comes from a 1967 alum who followed the exploits of Lloyd and Valvano in real time. Believe naming the Barn court after him is a wonderful acknowledgement of a special person.

It's not the court, it's the sport. I'm glad that the Dance-A-Thon and intramurals will be on Jimmy V Court.

I agree. The barn should be demolished, and a new athletic center built. Name the RAC Court, so that fans can appreciate Jimmy V every time they come to a Rutgers Basketball Game.

You know, from the Class of '67, I would go with Bobby Lloyd as a better choice. He was our first All American, I believe he was MVP of the NIT on third place team, and he is the one who has made the V Foundation what it is, endowed so that all donations go 100% to research. Now that would be a classy Stage 2 for Rutgers.

The ACC honored the likes of Derrick Coleman as a legend of the ACC a. Purple years back even though he never played in the league.
Naming the basketball court after Jim in the facility only used by the volleyball team is a waste

Well, if not the Barn, then nothing because his contributions to Rutgers basketball are minimal to justify naming our home court for him. He played 3 years of varsity basketball as second fiddle to a first team all america teammate who averaged 26 points a game over his career and then coached the Rutgers freshmen team for one season. That's it. Yes, in his post coaching career (which ended VERY badly), he has become an inspirational figure through the creation of his cancer charity and his ESPYs speech but the association with Rutgers is not great. His impact on NC State was much greater so it would be more appropriate to name ITS court after him if they were to get past the sordid ending to his tenure.

Loyal - Bobby Lloyd was not the MVP of the 1967 NIT. He should have been, scoring 129 points in the 4 games, then the record. But Southern Illinois had this skinny kid who helped them win the tournament. He went on to have some additional successes in NYC. You may have heard of him-Walt Frazier.

At the time we were all outraged that Lloyd wasn't named at the time.

Why Jimmy V? Why is he more important to RU than Phil Sellers, Tom Young, Dick Loyld? Jimmy V. also left NcState on probation with a ton of violations.

Disagree. Jimmy V played at the Barn. That's where the name belongs. He had nothing to do with the RAC. No reason to name that court in his honor.

Disagree.

In an age of PR & Social Media- everything becomes bullet points that influence recruits, outcomes, championships, funding - on and on.

While we're at it, I think that some sod from the parking lot (at the barn) should be brought over to the football stadium ....memorializing the Birthplace with sacred scarlet soil (and yes I've proposed this before).

Because if you mention any one of the names in your list to the average (not Rutgers) sports fans, which one do you think would be most recognized??

Thanks for clarifying. I do remember that the Saluki's were led by Walt Frazier. I guess with time my memory went with Justice rather than reality. I do think Bobby Lloyd modestly and with great class has been a major reason that the V Foundation is what it is. And he deserves appreciation even as he doesn't seek accolades...

And this.

Fully 100 percent agree with NOT naming the RAC court after Valvano. No reason to. You know what the average fan would say if they saw that on TV? "Why did THEY name the court after him?" Wonderful.

I don't care about name recognition; it's about RUTGERS. I can think of a lot of people off the top of my head who mean more to RUTGERS basketball than Valvano, who, fairly or not, I still associate with dirtbags being recruited to play for N.C. State.

Let's be honest: Nobody has done enough to merit naming the RAC court after them. Stringer comes the closest, but I really can't go there. Let's not be in such a hurry to join the naming party.

And if we haven't named our football field after Robeson, we shouldn't be naming anything anywhere after anybody. "The greatest end ever to play the game" on top of his academic brilliance, highest-paid entertainer one year, I mean we're talking Renaissance man here. By comparison, naming a court after someone better suited to having his name on the court at Iona is kind of silly.

The naming is a symbolic recognition to a former Rutgers grad, basketball player, basketball coach and a national figure in fighting cancer. It has nothing to do with who was the best Rutgers basketball player or athlete.

Always thought they should rip up that parking lot behind the Barn and build a neat little mini football field/park with statute to really celebrate the Birthplace of College Football. Could be a great great visual/branding.

Hate that Julie move the Birthplace of College Football for a dumb electronic ribbon sign. You can't read it anymore on game day. The one unique thing we have and we mess it up. Ugh New Jersey and History.

Maybe Hobbs can negotiate a deal to get The Birthplace of College Football back on top of the scoreboard when a new sponsor comes on board in a few years.

This was a very nice honor and was very well done by RU. Our present team was there as well.

Just listened to the WRSU play by play of the RU v New Mexico quarterfinal in March 1967 NIT at MSG.

Great job by WRSU to pull that out of the archives.

Also attended the ceremony. Well done!

This was a very nice honor and was very well done by RU. Our present team was there as well.
The event also had a dual purpose to honor the 1967 team that went to the NIT and played against Walt Frazier and Southern Illinois.

I was there
At 63 probably younger than most except the Valvano grandkids and his daughter who looks just like him..I was impressed by the guys on the '67 team. All of the top 7 guys are in tremendous shape. Not a fatty amongst them..7 Dorian Grey's? My first college game in 6th grade was watching them kick ass at the Barn.
