THE OFFICIAL RUTGERS-MINNESOTA PREDICTION THREAD

Are the Gophers better offensively than everyone of these teams we’ve already held in the 40s and 50s?
They have inside /outside scoring threats that consistently results in scoring more than 60 points.

Well continuing my keys to the game since it seems to be working when I post so here goes:

1. Limit Oturu's catches in the paint: I know this seems like a no brainer but that will really help our chances in containing him. I expect him to get his chances but if you have to make him catch it further from the basket it gives the guards a chance to provide some help D or maybe create a steal or two if he has to put it on the deck.

2. Contain Carr's dribble & drive: He is the key to the engine on this team and likes to push the pace & get in the paint. Force him to be a shooter where on the road he shoots 26% from the field & 29% from 3. Expect a solid dose of Mathis & Young on him.

3. Do Not Lose Kalscheur: I know he has been struggling from beyond the arc in BIG play but he was a 41% 3pt FG shooter last year & we all know what he did in that first half against us last year. Need to make sure his shots are contested & he does not hit a couple to get his confidence going. Force him to take tough ones and if he misses a few he might be less likely to shoot.

I expect this to be a tougher matchup than the Indiana game simply because they are playing better and have been tested on the road with plenty of non conference games against P5 teams. We need the Trapezoid of Terror to come alive again and keep the pressure on the Gophers. I think it will be tight but we will pull out a W as Baker has his legs under him, provides help to an already good defense and the combination of Harper/Yeboah against Demir and Omersa will allow us to get the edge.

Minnesota's overall record is 10-7. They haven't played any team that puts an effort into playing defense except Michigan State, Iowa, and Butler. Those games resulted in Minnesota losses and season-low point totals under 60. Bonus info: Minnesota is 0-5 on the road this year.

Minnesota had a lead vs Butler AT Hinkle with 10 mins to play.and Oturu was sick, though played. If you haven't seen Butler play, they are a projected #2 seed.
This is a good MN team.

Not saying you’re wrong, they are good. But so are Seton Hall, Wisconsin, Penn State and Indiana and we beat these teams by an average of over 10 at home in the last month or so.

Woulda, could, should, how many times have we heard that? Rutgers was right there at MSU until Myles fouled out, then MSU was never threatened.

It comes down to match ups and Rutgers has the advantage on defense. In fact, Rutgers has more scoring options while Minnesota has been a two-man offense for the most part. Minnesota can't afford to get into foul trouble because they lack depth. Pinto is comfortable playing with 6 guys. The closest Minnesota has played to Rutgwrs is Michigan State and that game was all MSU. Btw, I know Minnesota is a good team but there is a reason why they are 10-7 (0-5 on the road) overall. They are a different team on the road especially when hit in the mouth early in the game.

Oturo can be a matchup nightmare. Kid can knock down 3s and obviously kill you down low. He had his way with PSU. Myles needs to stay out of foul trouble. RU 67, Minn 59

No dispute on who has the best defense. They create extra possessions with offensive boards, the #1 team in conf offensive reb% (league play),mostly Oturu.
Need Kalscheur to continue his horrific shooting slump so they are down to two scorers. Feel good about containing Carr, but not so much Oturu.

The #1 scoring defense in the league is Rutgers.
Actually, Illinois is the #1 offensive rebounding team in the B1G. Minnesota is tied for 7th with Penn State just ahead of #8 Rutgers.
Rutgers' offense is 2nd in the league in FG % while Minnesota is 9th.
Rutgers is 2nd in steals. Minnesota is 7th.
Rutgers is last in 3pt shooting. Minnesota is 7th.
Rutgers is 12-0 at home. Minnesota is 0-6 (0-5 away/0-1 neutral) away from home.

I'm going with current trends. We're averaging 71pts per game overall (probably less in league play) and holding teams consistently 20 points or so below their averages so:

RU 71
Minn 53

Hard to go against RU since their D has become relentless and they now have a lot of weapons with Geo back. Pike will have a good plan against Oturu. RU 63 - Minny 58 (and let's hope we hit some foul shots).

Rutgers with a hard fought win elevating our home record to lucky 13-0!
