PSU has two ways to win....Stevens goes wild for 20-25 or RU falls asleep defensively and allows their very good freshman of Dredd and Bolton, to drain 3s.
I would allow Stevens as many shot attempts as he can take and shut off Bolton and Dredd. I would also single cover Stevens, because he's capable of moving the ball and finding shooters.
The reality is RU played better vs Minnesota than they did at Iowa, with the exception of allowing Minnesota's, Gabe Kaucher to launch 6 wide open 3s....and he proceeded to drain all 6 of them....if we defended Kaucher better to a 3 of 6 shooting effort, we hold Minnesota in the 50s and win comfortably.
Same concept applies here....stay with Bolton, Dredd and make Stevens take 23 to 25 shots and grind for his points and make his FTs. If we do that, I don't see a path for PSU to get into the 60s.....2s cant beat RU, but PSU hitting 7 to
8 3 pointers, will get you beat.
I won't mention RUs FTs, but any reasonable whistle by the refs and decent FT shooting by RU, makes this a 7 to 8 point, grind it out win. If RU knocks down 3s at an alarming rate like Iowa City, and this could be another step forward.
The scouting done by our assistant coaches and staff is what I consider A+. It doesn't mean we have an eraser at the rim like some teams or are as athletic as we might be in a year or so.
But I think RU now has more options to go to and I really like PSUs freshman enough that I think they're the key to this game, not Stevens, Watkins or Reaves.
How does this fan base handle success is the question...does this fan base expect a win, because they buried Iowa and believe PSU isn't capable of winning...???
The stuff I am reading the last couple of days is all good and somewhat eye opening. Many fans believe that a change has finally happened or RU is better than a couple of programs in the B1G....and I do believe RU is ahead of schedule as well, but this is when the fan base can't start to grumble if a slow start happens or some silly mistakes pop up early.....this is a true test of staying grounded and a bunch of underclassmen playing and staying within the concepts.
That's where the assistant coaches and staff have to play their defensive assignments well to frustrate the rest of the PSU roster. Let Stevens get his, shut down the rest, knock down some shots and climb the defensive glass.
RU 69, PSU 60.....it may look better than this and if Baker and Harper play within the offense, this has the capability of being very fun or a 14 to 15 point game, if we defend and rebound properly..... If this group of RU freshmen don't defend or treat Dredd and Bolton like they're guarding Bohannon and the shooters from Iowa, we're in for a dog fight.
